Jos Hooiveld back in training

Bring him back in for Saturday, Fonte was out longer than him and Martin on the bench. We have missed the back four playing it out since Fonte then Hoiveldt injured. Just DeRidder now to be fit and that makes a full squad. A strong experienced centre back on loan would top it off.

this is what I keep trying to tell them Derry, without our habitual CB partnership the launch pad for the build up isn't there.

When it was last possible,Palace at home, things weren't too bad.Since then one of the CMs has had to cover the bad positioning of the CBs almost all of the time.

There are too many superlatives used prematurely for Martin. He is a learner, nothing more, he has done his best, effective at times solid in the air with some disastrous positional misjudgements. His play out from the back is a long way short of competent and he needs to get more competent with his left foot which is just a swinger. Since the two centre backs in front of him were injured we have been short of decent cover which has bitten us in the ********. The passing game starts at the back but invariably with Martin it goes back to the goalkeeper to be punted long.

Harsh but a lot of truth. He isnt a promotion quality player and needs a season loaned out to really learn his game. If Seaborne had stayed fit he probably would have been loaned out.

However, he does have a lot of potential if he continues to improve.

I would agree with all of that.

Broadly agree, although I have to say that young Martin has acquitted himself better than just "a learner"...

You are right that he has yet to acquire the positional expertise required at this level and he does need to work hard on his first touch and passing game, but he has deputised in some big games against decent quality strikers and won plaudits for the manner he has stuck to his tasks.

need a new centre back desperately, martin isn't champ standard, league 2 CB really, I fear this may be the reason we don't get promoted due to the lack of a real quality centre back / RB

Couldn't agree more.

Jose Fonte and Jos Hooiveld are decent enough championship standard players, but either would look a hell of a lot better playing alongside the real dominant CB we just don't have at the moment - like how Micheal Svensson (in his prime) used to make Claus Lundekvam look a bit better than he truly was perhaps.

In my opinion we should have attempted to obtain such a player last month rather than signing TWO more strikers.
