derry Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 Bring him back in for Saturday, Fonte was out longer than him and Martin on the bench. We have missed the back four playing it out since Fonte then Hoiveldt injured. Just DeRidder now to be fit and that makes a full squad. A strong experienced centre back on loan would top it off. When it was last possible,Palace at home, things weren't too bad.Since then one of the CMs has had to cover the bad positioning of the CBs almost all of the time. SuperMikey Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 Martin has been superb, but he's looking quite tired now. I'd start Jos on saturday.
channonball Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 Martin has not been superb, do you remember Leicester or the other night? He is playing well above his level in the Championship. A first team starter in a mid League one team at best.
Saint Charlie Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 Would be a big boost to have Jos and Jose together. Surely he could come straight in as has only missed 2 weeks.
dannysfc Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 I'm also going to stick up for Martin here and say that he has also done Well whilst Jos has been out But is Good to have Jos back in defence along with Fonte so we'll see!!! derry Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 There are too many superlatives used prematurely for Martin. He is a learner, nothing more, he has done his best, effective at times solid in the air with some disastrous positional misjudgements. His play out from the back is a long way short of competent and he needs to get more competent with his left foot which is just a swinger. Since the two centre backs in front of him were injured we have been short of decent cover which has bitten us in the ********. The passing game starts at the back but invariably with Martin it goes back to the goalkeeper to be punted long.

He isnt a promotion quality player and needs a season loaned out to really learn his game. If Seaborne had stayed fit he probably would have been loaned out. However, he does have a lot of potential if he continues to improve.
corsacar saint Posted 9 February, 2012 Share Posted 9 February, 2012 We need our strongest eleven available for every match, from here on in.

saintsfannick Posted 10 February, 2012 Share Posted 10 February, 2012 need a new centre back desperately, martin isn't champ standard, league 2 CB really, I fear this may be the reason we don't get promoted due to the lack of a real quality centre back / RB

Broadly agree, although I have to say that young Martin has acquitted himself better than just "a learner"... You are right that he has yet to acquire the positional expertise required at this level and he does need to work hard on his first touch and passing game, but he has deputised in some big games against decent quality strikers and won plaudits for the manner he has stuck to his tasks. saintbob40 Posted 10 February, 2012 Share Posted 10 February, 2012 Martin is a young lad learning his trade and he has done well generally. He will develop quickly but Jos for Saturday. I also hope NA has the guts to put Billy Sharp into the team. Best 11 for Saturday and Tuesday.

Jose Fonte and Jos Hooiveld are decent enough championship standard players, but either would look a hell of a lot better playing alongside the real dominant CB we just don't have at the moment - like how Micheal Svensson (in his prime) used to make Claus Lundekvam look a bit better than he truly was perhaps. In my opinion we should have attempted to obtain such a player last month rather than signing TWO more strikers.
