Glenn Hoddle

In one of the papers on Sunday - Matt Le Tiss was saying Hoddle best candidate for job (apart from Redknapp).

Not surprising really. Many players have said that Hoddle was one of the best England managers they had played under. I remain convinced that had we not been deriailed by the antic of the vocal minority, Hoddle would have been SFC manager and the last 7 years would have been premiership years.

But we'll just never know.

I don't accept that at all. Just about every Saints fan i know was absolutely dead set against the return of the prodigal, and that covers a fair spectrum of opinion. I only know one guy who was in favour of it, and even he had his reservations after Hoddle's England debacle and God-bothering stuff. As for keeping us in the prem, well thats just monumental speculation, he'd have had to work within the same budget limitations placed on every other manager we had after him. He may have done better, he may not, but one things for sure; the fans wouldnt have been behind him, at least not from the start. If he had thought otherwise dont you think he'd have taken the job regardless of the "vocal minority"? He obviously wanted it.

I would say that your survey of people 'not wanting Hoddle' was against the norm. The vasy majority of fans I imagine wanted Hoddle back for the good of the club. We all know ther is little loyalty in football, but you go for the best candidate. I am sure that the appointment of Hoddle, but the board bottled it because of the vocal minority. In this aspect, they totally misjudged the vast majority of Saints fans who rightly were aghast at the much more risky appointment of Sturrock from League 1. Unfortunately, Sturrock had little status, respect from premier league players who probably wanted Hoddle as the new manager. Indeed, there has always been a hint that WGS had recommended Hoddle !

Sturrock made matters worse by his naive training and management style, thinking he could apply the same standards at Plymouth to Saints. I suspect that he soon lost control of the changing rooom and the rest is history. In this sense, to say that Hoddle would not have had any more money that Sturrock is a bit of a red herring. Hoddle would have attracted players to SFC and would have been able to get the best out of the players that he did have.

Sturrock only cropped up after Hoddle had decided against taking the job, and I agree, he was a disaster. What I'm saying is that if it really had been only a minority of fans against Hoddle's reappointment, and the board obviously felt he was the best candidate, surely he and they would have done the deal. Very few fans were supporting the idea and most were dead against it, either the ones I knew personally or the ones on radio forums, letters to the echo, etc etc. Hoddle clearly wanted the job and the board clearly wanted to appoint him. If they had believed that most of the fanbase were in favour of it but were just keeping schtum, they'd have gone ahead regardless. Dont forget, that was actually the reason Hoddle gave for withdrawing from the potential position; that he was aware that the fans would not give him their backing. He gave no other reason.

Do I not like that.

Anyways, its a t*ss-up between him and the Wally with the Brolly as to who was worst.

Bit harsh on Taylor tbf. I followed England home and away during USA94 qualifying and although there were some not brilliant performances and puzzling selections:

we played the best 45 mins of football I've seen us play in the 2-2 draw against Holland at Wembley.....got undone by Wouters fracturing Gazza'a cheekbone which he should've been sent off for

also got completely stitched up in Rotterdam when Koeman should've been sent off with Platt clean through

Not that I'm still bitter or anything.

I did get to have a beer with the team and Lawrie Mac in Turkey though - every cloud and all that

yep Mark Draper and that German forward were his 2 main signings.Lol all those players he signed for Spurs flopped as well. He was at his best when making the players Dave Jones bought, more organised and starry eyed. Any player of stature didnt get too impressed by his skills showing off during training.

"Alan Shearer says Glenn Hoddle is a realistic contender for the England manager's job should Harry Redknapp not be appointed"

agree and think he did a great job at saints and england but was not happy about his comments about the disabled and how he left us but a top coach despite the people who don,t like or hate him.
