We Can Still Do It... and Here Is Why...

The Chairman and Manager signalled their intent to go up with their January deals. On the pitch all is not well right now, but throwing your hands up in the air bawling about it doesn't help either. Equally, pretending it is all going to be alright and sticking your head in the sand doesn't either. SFC is in a great place, we are 22nd in the whole country, let's try and enjoy it, and see if we can break into that top 20.

We need to rally behind the team. We HAVE over-achieved, however I do still feel form will be found again. It is do-able.

I refer you to Wolves in the season they won the title, check out the highlighted set of results:

In this period they only took 11 points from 39, and still won the title. Like ourselves, they had a storming start, struggled and looked like throwing it away between December-March and still did it.

Believe.

This is far, far, far from over.

Maybe I'd agree with you if we'd signed a new rightback and a centreback - and maybe a proper winger - as well as a striker. Falque and Tandanari were not really statements of intent - nor was settling for keeping Puncheon - probably the exact opposite.

Although getting Puncheon back in the team may turn out to be out best bit of January business.

We signed Sharp, one of the top strikers at this level, not sure what else you were expecting there?

Not sure why we need a new RB either, seeing as Richardson has been my unsung hero this year. (Although he possibly doesn't have that competition behind him)

Puncheon coming back into the fold is like a new winger signing too, so I'd say we addressed all the positions apart from additional CB cover. That's where we look a bit stretched IMO. I think we lack another left footed centre back, as Martin has always looked awkward on the right side to me.

From what I was told we were still aiming to get Collins tied up in the loan window, so we'll see.

Interesting comparison with Wolves's promotion season (although the results you posted aren't displaying). Do you recall who they signed in the January window? i.e. did they splash out or simply regain form with the bulk of the same squad that suffered the slump?

Cheers. So, pretty comparable with our couple of signings then. We didn't ship out as much as them though!

Maybe I'd agree with you if we'd signed a new rightback (IMO, Richardson has been one of the players of the season so far) and a centreback (Martin has done very well and we have Jos and Seaborne on their way back) - and maybe a proper winger (Puncheon and Falque) - as well as a striker (Lee and Billy Sharp). Falque and Tandanari were not really statements of intent (Why?) - nor was settling for keeping Puncheon (Why?)- probably the exact opposite (How?)

You just can't please some people!!! I struggle to see why some fans bother following us at times with attitudes like this....

We are 2nd as it stands, west ham are slowly messing it up at the top. we will do what they did and wait to slip up and then we will POUNCE and take that 1st spot! we need to be right behind the team on everything! that means bigger crowds on those cold tuesday evenings, singing left right and centre and just going mental when we score from home or away! WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON and WILL do what we want. if that means bottling it on going top and sticking with 2nd so be it! COYR!

With a full strength side we'll be ok.

Great to have everyone fit again. We have been desperately unlucky with injuries.

I reckon we go on another run now. Starting with Burnley.

Yes, of course its great that we have everyone available, but I'm not sure I buy the whole "we've been massively under strength" argument. Centre-back, I think there's no doubt we've looked shaky there; only 4 clean sheets in the last 16 games tells a story there. But all over the pitch we have had strength in depth, we should have been able to perform better than we have in the past couple of months.

But we certainly have the potential within the squad to go on another run (and with the teams around us performing as they are, we need to). With Puncheon back in the fold and performing I would suggest that, apart from at CB, we have more than adequate cover should we lose any of our first team players (perhaps also with the exception of Davis). And with the likes of Puncheon, Chaplow, Guly, de Ridder (and potentially Falque??) we have a lot of different options of attacking midfielders to shape a game; plus of course Lee and Sharp added to Lambert, Connolly, Guly and Barnard also give us a number of options up front.

The squad was already good; the additions we made in January should be enough to get us back on track. I still have concerns at CB but if Jos can get back and forge a partnership again with Fonte then that could be just what we need.

We've had a left back playing right back, centre midfielders playing wide, and De Ridder playing (I know it's divisive, but I don't rate him at all). I think injuries have severely weakened us over the last couple of months.

Can't disagree with Harding at RB; I assume Butterfield must be injured but not really seen anything about it.

I do actually think de Ridder has potential, but he hasn't yet stepped up to the plate. Puncheon being back and having Guly and chaplow as an option is certainly a mssive benfit, but I don't agree our options in that department have been all that bad as reserve options.

Our past 5 games have been our worst in terms of results; not one win, three draws and 2 defeats. And that's with the bulk of injured players making their returns.

I do think we have been shown up IMO at CB; I thought Martin could do it, but he's not really stepped up to the mark as I hoped he could. Hooiveld needs to get back soon, or we need a loanee.

If you look at most of the opinion here we need RBs, CBs and continuity up front. I think where we will succeed is in midfield. Given the way NA wants to play by passing it from the back through midfiled it puts added pressure on the central midfield pairing who are constantly asked to pick up the ball in deep positions and work it through. When we have been poor in my view is when the two CMs have had a poor game i.e. Cork/Schneiderlin/Hammond. There is so much pressure on them because of our style. Let's hope they can perform well through to the end of the season. If they do then I fancy our chances.

Fact is us and Wham are the teams with the cash. They bought Maynard, we bought Sharp. I think Brum will start to slope and Cardiff arent that great. This weekends game is crucial. Win and get a draw on Tuesday and its starting to look good again especially with a good run of fixtures after that.
