Saint_John Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 I hope fans do not underestimate burnley as they are on a good run at the moment. In their last 12 league games their recond is 8W 2D 2L with a gd of +13. This compares to our start to the season 8-2-2 gd +14. Away from home they have WON 5 of their last 6 league games i.e. wins at hull (2-3), west ham (1-2), seaweed (0-1), boro (0-2) and forest (0-2). Their only defeat was at leeds (2-1) where they played the last hour with 10 men and only lost to 88 & 97 min goals. They have a "method" for playing away from home that is designed to frustrate the home fans. They are also TOP of "Shooting Table" http://www.football-league.co.uk/page/ClubShooting/0,,10794~20117,00.html 207 On target; 195 off and 10 woodwork (412) compared to our 183-162-9 (354). That is 16% more attempts on goal that us!! For me Saturday is ALL about the supporters, if the Itchen & Kingsland sit there and "WAIT TO BE ENTERTAINED" then we will drop points imo. We need an atmosphere like whu or boro games with non stop chanting, even when we don't have the ball and they are camped around our penalty area.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Sadly, I expect us to lose 2-0. Austin (obviously) and J-Rod, to complete the set of our striker targets scoring against us. No surprise there...
saintrich Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Davis Richardson Martin Fonte Fox Guly Hammond Schneiderlin Lallana Lambert Sharp Subs: Bialkowski, Cork, Puncheon, Connolly, Lee.
Appy Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Burnley are a good side. This will be a tough game. We need a win and i think we will get it, 2-1. Dunno who will score for us, obviously Austin for them.
alpine_saint Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 No surprise there... So f**king what ? If you dont like it, dont read it.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 So f**king what ? If you dont like it, dont read it. lol Difficult to miss as this type of post from you is ever present To be honest i should have put "no surprise as that is what you wish for so you can go on and on and on and on and moaning" Do you ever predict anything positive?
Window Cleaner Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 We'll batter them about 4 nil. depends if Jos is back or not. With Jos...3-0 or 3-1 without Jos...who knows,I can see J Rod and Austin being too good for Martin. Not a fan really, wish we'd got someone in in the window, right at the start cos Jose was absent then.I went to Gillingham a couple of seasons back and still can't get that woeful Martin/Fonte spectacle out of my head.Jose was moaning all afternoon about being on ther wrong side and Martin was just well woeful.I think Martin and Jos works better than Martin and Jose actually.

Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Any news on ticket sales....how may soldIs there ever ?
saint1977 Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 If Ross Wallace is fit for them, we need to ensure Lallana gives Fox decent protection and stays left on a 4-4-2 because I was at the game up there and Wallace BBQed Fox when Lallana was pushed further forward by Adkins, how we didn't concede a second goal in the 10 minutes after Austin I'll never know, Wallace seemed to sail past Fox a dozen times during that period and some dangerous crosses fizzed across and Bikey missed a sitter. The other way is to go back to the diamond with Lallana at the head of it and Puncheon tucked in on the left side of it. Pity Chaplow needs more games as he'd be good at neutralising Marvin Bartley's engine, who ran the game up there until Burnley tired in the last 20 mins and we started coming into it more. Desperately need Jos back otherwise Austin will eat Martin for lunch, Fonte couldn't handle him up there although Jos did a good job on Rodriguez. Lambert and Sharp should cause their back four lots of problems though and they were very rickety once we actually put them under pressure, esp. from set pieces where Lambert should be a danger if Fox and Frazer can get their delivery right. I'd imagine that will be big Adkins priority leading up to the game as the delivery recently has been well below the minimum standard expected
Saints67 Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Davis Richardson, Fonte, Martin, Fox Puncheon, Cork, Morgan, Lallana Lambert, Sharp Subs: Bart, Hooiveld, Hammond, Guly, Lee
Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Agreed, have to keep Wallace and Bartley quiet, they bossed us up at their place and we were lucky to get a draw there. Will be a tough ask to keep both Austin (who always scores against us) and Rodriguez (who has scored a few recently) quiet. Wouldn't be surprised if they scored a few with our current leaky defence. Lets just hope we score more.
S-Clarke Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 I'm really impressed with Burnley as a side, they use the ball so well and get wide - but they've got a focal point up top who is none other than mr rodriquez who is an absolute class act. We missed out there. I'm confident as we have some of our players back though, we're getting that team back which served us so well. Relying on our squad players hasn't helped us at all in the last 6 weeks as I don't think they're good enough for where we're aspiring to be. I'd play.. Davis Richardson - Fonte - Jos (got a hunch he's fit) - Fox Puncheon - Cork - Morgan - Lallana Lambert - Sharp IMO we're getting to a stage again where the team is pretty much picking it's self, let's hope the 2 up top hit it off because they could be potent.

S-Clarke Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Hammond for Morgan for me. I think Morgan deserves to keep his place after Saturday tbh, and Hammond didn't seem to do anything to stamp himself in that midfield last night (according to reports). I do like Hammond, but Morgan was majestic on Saturday in tricky conditions.
Window Cleaner Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 I' I'd play.. Davis Richardson - Fonte - Jos (got a hunch he's fit) - Fox Puncheon - Cork - Morgan - Lallana Lambert - Sharp . So would I, this is our first XI and right now that's all that counts.Good to see Nigel protecting the engine room last night even if he knew we'd probably lose without them.First time we'll have played what I consider as a first team since what Bristol away and even then it didn't last long. Pompey away wasn't bad, nearly all there but most of the other games we've always been without either Jos, Rickie,José or Adam and it shows.
shurlock Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Schneiderlin for Hammond - he made a massive difference in the first game. Their midfield which had dominated the first half by crowding the middle of the park could not cope with Morgan's ability to stretch play. Think Sharp will make a huge difference - opposition teams can double mark Lambert all they like; we now have another outball/target.

Lets just hope we score more. Leaky defence? The Millwall game is irrelevant, we didn't have our first choice midfield protecting the back four, and we were without Davis and Fox. Go back to the previous two league games, and we kept a clean sheet at Birmingham, who had been steamrollering all comers, and should have kept a clean sheet against one of the best teams in the division, Cardiff, only letting a goal in because of a foul on the keeper. If Jos is back, we'll be looking even tighter at the back, I'm sure.
trousers Posted 8 February, 2012 Author Posted 8 February, 2012 Ok, having finally worked out who is in our squad and who isn't, I think we'll start with the following line-up: 1. Davis 2. Richardson 3. Fonte 4. Hooiveld 5. Fox 6. Puncheon 7. Cork 8. Morgan 9. Lallana 10. Sharp 11. Lambert Pretty much picks itself I would venture....?

Coming out of that now, in the last two league games, we have sorted our defence out. And the signs are there that the goalscoring will return... unless for some reason Lambert and Sharp don't click.
Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 We've hardly looked particularly sturdy though at the back!
syd_barrett_saint Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 We've hardly looked particularly sturdy though at the back! Let's see how the next couple of games go... you could hardly say we have defensive problems with almost all of our squad to select from for the Cardiff and Birmingham games. I would be very surprised if we concede more than 2 goals total in the next two games, especially if Jos is back. Of course, I could be proved wrong. But I'm pretty sure that both of us don't want me to be!
syd_barrett_saint Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Assuming Jos is back, and that Chaplow will perform better on the right or left of midfield if needed as a sub for half an hour: Davis Richardson, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana Lambert, Sharp Subs: Bialkowski, Martin, Hammond, Chaplow, Lee
Mowgli Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 I have to say if jos is fit I think he should partner Martin. fonte is struggling atm.
Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 I have to say if jos is fit I think he should partner Martin. fonte is struggling atm. he has literally JUST come back from injury....
The Cat Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Assuming Jos is back, and that Chaplow will perform better on the right or left of midfield if needed as a sub for half an hour: Davis Richardson, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana Lambert, Sharp Subs: Bialkowski, Martin, Hammond, Chaplow, Lee Just how I'd have it although it seems weird not including Guly anywhere considering he's our second highest scorer. Maybe on the bench instead of Hammond? Stupid 5 subs rule.

Maybe on the bench instead of Hammond? Stupid 5 subs rule. you have to have some defensive minded players at your disposal. We have signed too many attacking players and now we don't know what to do with them all,so afternoon off for the reserves again I guess.Probably why NA was so hacked off about losing in the cup,we have 23 or 24 players and only 16 are of much use to us at any one time.Reeves might even get the nod ahead of Chaplow on the bench as well.Time for some loan outs. Now if we'd had a defensive MF on the bench last night to come on at 2-1 and shut the game down by being boring and passing the ball back and sideways we might be a damn sight better off today. Maybe on the bench instead of Hammond? Stupid 5 subs rule. I have to say, I would be very close to having Guly on the bench ahead of either Chaplow or Lee. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Adkins has both Guly AND Connolly on the bench ahead of Chaplow and Lee. If it wasn't for the stupid 5 subs rule, as you say, we could have all four of those players on the bench. Grrr.
Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Cannot see Holmes getting near the first XI now. Wouldn't be surprised to see Reeves/Holmes/Barnard to go out on loan. Also makes the signing of Falque a bit surplus as well.

Also makes the signing of Falque a bit surplus as well. Falque is about Puncheon, we obviously didn't count on some foolish manager or other not giving us a million £ for him.In fact we talked ourselves into a corner over Puncheon, not going out on loan again, only for sale etc etc. Then he had us over a barrel on restriction of trade and we had to climb down. Not that we're the losers mind you.

Saint Garrett Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 He might have been handy in the 'reserve teams' but surely he's not going to be too close to the first 11 and not going to be better than Lallana/Puncheon/Chaplow/SDR/Guly/Falque?

saints_is_the_south Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Burnley have already beaten Derby, West Ham, Middlesbro and Hull away this season, I'm backing them to add Saints to that list on Saturday I'm afraid. 2-0 Burnley.
S-Clarke Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Burnley have already beaten Derby, West Ham, Middlesbro and Hull away this season, I'm backing them to add Saints to that list on Saturday I'm afraid. 2-0 Burnley. Let's not look at it like that. You can't read into their past successes and past away results, we all know what this league is like. Anyone can be anyone at any given time. They've got to slip up away at some point. Burnley are a good side, but IMO....if we're on our game we will cause them plenty of issues.
RonManager Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Our defence needs beefing up. This ought to do it... -----------------DAVIS------------------- ---------------BIALKOWSKI--------------- RICHARDSON FONTE MARTIN JAIDI HARDING BUTTERFIELD DICKSON HOOIVELD FOX

corsacar saint Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 IF Rickie and Billy Sharp combine well,we will tear them apart.
sfc4prem Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Really looking forward to this actually, think we'll do well based on the Cardiff and Birmingham game.
Cascadia Saint Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Let's go retro and tear them a new one. Actually I do think sooner or later we will stuff a team. Form could come back at any moment, an early goal and all our players will get some confidence back. I mean, when did we last take the lead early on at home?! Been a long time. If we score in the first 15 mins or so, I think we'll win. Burnley aren't a bad side at all, but they're not the toughest challenge either. 'Easier' than Leicester, Cardiff, and Birmingham games we've had recently, and only 1 of those was a bad performance to be fair. Draws are funny like that, they look good next to wins and bad next to losses. Stop talking sense! And stop typing stuff I wanted to write myself... bastard.
channonball Posted 8 February, 2012 Posted 8 February, 2012 Fingers crossed Jos is back. Just watched the Millwall highlights. It's fair to say some of Martin's defending was woeful.
