Verbal Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 As a Saints fan, I have no ‘second team’, but if I did it would be Fulham, since Craven Cottage is just two streets away from where I live. The ground is also lovely – with a mixed home-and-away end (the only one of its kind)…and one of the few remaining pieces of great Edwardian football architecture, the Johnny Haynes stand. Now the club wants to build a new stand to replace the very dull Riverside, and it looks like this (sorry, I’m rubbish at posting pictures): http://www.fulhamfcstadium.com/design-concept/architecture/ Amazingly for a neighbourhood where houses just across from the ground cost $1.5m or more, and where people get very loudly wound up by anything architecturally new, everyone seems to love this design. If St Mary’s were ever to be expanded, I’d hope we’d do something with at least a similar bit of style…
Special K Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 Looks good. Vebal, I fancy building this. Do us a favour and pop down to the ground to put a word in, will you? Cheers.

But you'll need a head for heights. They're building it on top of the existing stand - they're only demolishing the Riverside roof.
sambosa75 Posted 10 February, 2012 Share Posted 10 February, 2012 Another local Saints fan... Good to see. Although I am closer to the Bridge than the Cottage.
Mattio Posted 10 February, 2012 Share Posted 10 February, 2012 Does this mean you live in a £1.5M house too?

Saint_Jonny Posted 10 February, 2012 Share Posted 10 February, 2012 The new stand looks terrific, an amazing contrast to the stand that will sit opposite it!

Badger Posted 11 February, 2012 Share Posted 11 February, 2012 Will the arab build Michael Jackson shaped floodlights on each corner of the ground too ?
Badger Posted 11 February, 2012 Share Posted 11 February, 2012 Out of interest, what capacity will this stand provide ? As I read this it is essntially a new upper tier to the existing riverside stand.
Verbal Posted 12 February, 2012 Author Share Posted 12 February, 2012 Out of interest, what capacity will this stand provide ? As I read this it is essntially a new upper tier to the existing riverside stand. The capacity of the ground will go up by about 4,300, to around 30,000. At which point my maths fails me, as well as my knowledge of the ground. But yes, they're leaving the existing sweating configuration unchanged and adding the second tier to very pleasing effect. As for Michael Jackson, I think the Fulham fans have heard most of the jokes by now, and they don't really care that much because they have a chairman who's sunk about £180m into the club, and is looking to spend a lot more by committing to stay at Craven Cottage, which is really quite a lovely ground, rather than move to somewhere more generic. With that kind of commitment, he could probably stick the old Ted Bates statue in there and the Fulham fans wouldn't bat an eyelid (Not that they wouldn't be a bit baffled...).
