Colinjb Posted 4 February, 2012 Share Posted 4 February, 2012 (edited) It's taken 3 hours to get back to Coventry, the roads around Birmingham are a nightmare. It not the volume of traffic but the snow has overpowered the grit and causing all manner of issues with gradient.... particularly on the A45 on the way out. To anyone on the buses and driving back to Hampshire, my thoughts are with you guys it's f**king awful out there. Godspeed. If that game hadn't been on sky it would have been called off, i'm sure of it. The atmosphere in the away end was good today, quite lively, mainly by people trying to keep warm I think. Such a shame Billy Sharp didn't pull the trigger with our clearest chance. Didn't get chance to see why Fox got sent off as it was at the other end of the ground but we were stunned.... although it appeared that Lallana was lucky to get only a yellow in the first half. A real shame Puncheon was taken off, he looked damn good and was my MOTM, Schneiderlin was however immense too. Any idea where Lee was? Genk Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Just back in Southampton now, was on the coach, horrendous on the roads out of Birmingham, all the way home pretty much. Many cars being pushed up hills coming out of Brum. Thought we edged it tonight, Morgan and Puncheon played really well, but we aren't pulling the trigger in front of goal when we need to. Brum had a couple of chances, so draw is probably fair on reflection and I would have taken a point before the game. It was the kind of conditions where you knew fine well that the opposition could quite easily score a flukey goal and you go home gutted. Sharp looked good when he came on, was a shame Nigel didn't start with him, can see Connolly rapidly not making the bench in the near future especially with the likes of SDR and Lee to come in. Never a red, first tackle was fantastic and how you can get booked for the second is laughable. Credit to the fans who made the trip, I think that just pipped Leeds away a couple of season ago for the coldest I have ever been.

John Boy Saint Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 I am working at the NEC for the week staying at Balsall Common like Colin says the roads round Birmingham are atrocious in 2 hours we saw 2 gritters which is disgusting considering the snow arrived exactly as predicted, took 2hours to get back so god only knows what time Saints fans will get home to Southampton. Tonight's game should not have gone ahead and Sky should be disgusted with themselves as they must have put the squeeze on Brum to see it on. As for the game it was a bit of a joke as the ball wouldn't run cleanly, we certainly adapted better to the conditions as most of the first half was played at the opposite end of the ground. Still a point on the road against a team on fire ATM keeps the tally ticking along.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 December 2009? No, that was definitely colder! That was -11 IIRC? I got kicked out after 8 minutes. Worst away day ever.
Colinjb Posted 5 February, 2012 Author Share Posted 5 February, 2012 That was -11 IIRC? I got kicked out after 8 minutes. Worst away day ever. One steward assaulted an elderly guy sat behind me, was unbelievable. I was sat literally next to the home fans and I've never seen such a brutal b*stard of a steward. Most of them were ok but there was a bad egg who just wanted trouble.
Colinjb Posted 5 February, 2012 Author Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Ok, watching the highlights, we mistook Fox for Lallana for that tackle in the first half. Now the red card makes a little sense..... in the sense of two yellows for fouls that didn't merit it anyway!

Probably the same c*nt who tried throwing me down the stairs then when I flung my arms out to try and stop myself and caught him, he claimed I assaulted him. Ended up pinned against a wall by police, tv cameras in my face, and literally thrown out the gates. Bunch of c*nts.
Genk Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 December 2009? No, that was definitely colder! Yeh thats the one, when Snodgrass curled one in the top corner. Baltic. Just saw the highlights and the ref has had a shocker for the second yellow. Hope everyone gets home safely. Dangerous out there. Coach driver did very well in the conditions. ThreeSixty Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 This country could have 6 months warning and still be unprepared for a bit of snow. Good luck and fair play to all those that traveled tonight.

dronskisaint Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Respect to those up there - great noise and a reiteration of the chant that made me chuckle at St Mary's earlier in the season.. to do with the touch of Marlon King!
ladysaint Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Think that was the worse journey I have experienced travelling back from a game took 7 hours from Bham never seen so many jack knife lorries or smashed up cars on one road hope all other fans got back safely. Thought we were the better team, Martin, Morgan and Puncheon were excellent. Why didnt Rickie have a shot with the free kick right at the end of the game, a points a point and happy with that. Granted not much to do with saints but felt I needed to make a point.

Granted not much to do with saints but felt I needed to make a point. Well, you had a week's warning the snow was coming - did you pop out and get winter tyres fitted to your car? The reason why the roads are a problem when it snows is because so many people who haven't got a clue how to drive in snow (because it is actually a comparatively rare occurrence in this country) think they can carry on as usual, get into trouble and then try and make out it's someone else's fault. You were warned - go prepared to spend the night in Birmingham or wrapped up in the car - or take the train. Too many people think they are being heroic carrying on because that's what the British do. Fine, but don't blame someone else when you get stuck. I got four season tyres (not quite winter but far better than summer tyres in the cold stuff) fitted after the last two winters severe weather. This year we didnt get our first frost until last week and the snow today is no more than 2cm and melting fast. Its a hard call to make whether its worth it, especially if its not essential for you to travel whatever the weather. MadDogMatt Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Been watching Saints home and away for 30 years plus and than was the worse journey I can remember. Was travelling to and from East London and never made it back ....... worse type of car to have for snow, a rear wheel drive automatic!! As mentioned by several roads back to the M6 were dreadful, cars losing grip and sliding all over the place especially the slightest of uphill. Son was a star getting out the car loads of times using the floor mats to give tempoary grip. M6 and then the M1 was a mare. 30 mph most of the way sometimes less, wild excitement to hit 40 a couple of times. Full monty slide and spin on the M1 was a scary moment. Jackknifed tanker lorry in front of us near Watford and we ended up sliding into the snow of the recovery lane. Well and truly stuck. Two cops in a 4x4 managed to get the tanker on its its way and then us too with a good old fashioned push. Limped to to North Circlular and got stuck a few more times. Took a unknown route to avoid a hill on the NCirc, more getting stuck etc. Slid into a side road to park and with the help of a local guy managed to wheel spin to the side of the road after what seemed an age. Managed to find a cheap and cheerful hotel mile and half away on foot, got there 0215. Car is still somewhere near East Finchley. Amen. Oh yeh, the game. Fully derserved a point. Spider bossed midfield. Energetic display from Lallana and Punch. Martin and Fonte solid. One vg save from Davis.
Saint Garrett Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Was surprised Deano didn't start to be honest, although thought Spiderman had a decent game. Lambert I thought was quite anonymous but it was a difficut game, good point!I stayed with a mate on outskirts of brum and it took us over an hour to get back to his which is a journey which should normally take 10 mins! Couldn't get out to the club we'd planned to go to, so ended up just having a curry and watching MOTD! Support was good, was at the top and everyone looked like they were singing. Funny chant RE Marlon. Sounds like some people had a nightmare getting home. I'm just on way back to Sheffield now, A good point.
markyboy Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Got back about 5pm today. Ten minute train ride from Bordseley to Yardley Wood - only saints fan among the bluenoses - so was lucky not to get pelted with snowballs in the snowball fight on the platform. Then a two and a half mile trudge through the snow back to my wife's auntie's house. Must have looked like a yeti when I turned up on their doorstep. Still, the walk from Yardley Wood to Hollywood is littered with fast food joints and off licenses so supplies were good. Wasn't too bad then, roads were clear coming down the M40 this afternoon. Fair play to those that journeyed back last night though. Don't see saints much at the moment but enjoyed the game, excellent display from us away fans. Thought their crowd was very poor, matched by their team who we should have taken more than a point from. How they've scored all of those goals in the last few games astounds me, because our boys adapted to the conditions far better than they did with some neat passing moves. Didn't worry when Birmingham had the ball because I knew we'd get it back seconds later. Just bloody shoot more!!

I don't think I'll ever moan again about getting caught in traffic for a few minutes on the M3 near Winchester on the way to a home game after reading about your travel woes!
