Noodles34 Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 If you read MLT's book, its quite clear that Hoddle has a real problem with Matt's actual ability, and as soon as he actually saw it, he was, well seemingly jealous. It can be the only way to put it. Apparently they have reconcilled now, but it amazed me that the same man who appeared at the end of the 'Unbelievable' video was indeed the same man that took him Matt off against Italy, when he had been our only hope of scoring, and then shunned him in 98 after Loftus Road. The icing on the cake for Hoddle was to come to The Dell and try and do the same there. Though Matt has a lot to be accountable in respect of his final years, the Hoddle years certainly took something away at the end, and pretty much killed off the legend. alpine_saint Posted 5 February, 2012 Share Posted 5 February, 2012 Where did I say it has improved? Fair enough, but your choice of words make it sound like it was a low point, ergo, it has improved.

Golden Balls Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 I would love to have an hour alone to chat to Hoddle about this. His big ego attitude wont ever answer the questions honestly in public, but if he was locked in a room Id love to know his real reasoning. In my opinion it's one, or a combination of the following 3 reasons; 1) Matt turned him down for a transfer (which proved he rated him) 2) Matt was better than he ever was 3) He didn't run enough, despite there never being a need for him to do so. I think in his book he mentions that he refused to go to see Irene the faith healer and that did not help. What infuriated me was that Hoddle chastised Chris Sutton for refusing to play in the B team
Monkeyboy Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 We would have been a lot stronger at pens if Matty had been there!
jawillwill Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 A shame for English football, but a great news for Southampton football club. Let's be honest, if he had gone, and had a blinder of a world cup (which would have been a very real possibility if he played), Saints almost certainly wouldn't have been able to keep hold of him. A blessing in disguise if you ask me. Which nobody did.
pap Posted 6 February, 2012 Share Posted 6 February, 2012 Watched this game in my student days. Got thoroughly hammered, and mistakenly believed that there was no way that Le Tiss would be left out of the squad on that performance. Ah, the sweet innocence of youth. I'm sure that this an utterly biased view, but they should have built a team around that man.
