Le Tiss England hattrick

I think he hit the bar too that game. Absolute disgrace he wasn't taken.

He really must have been totally demoralised after playing like that and not being selected for the squad. Wasn't he also amongst the leagues top scorer that season, and remembering a lot of that season was under Branfart that was quite an achievement in its own right.

I'm sure Dalek can explain the reasoning behind Hoddles logic - personally I think it is because he turned down Spurts. Back then it seemed a shoe in way of getting into the England squad if you had ever played for them.

i was there that night and the crowd must have been 50% saints fans there for no other reason than to get behind Le Tiss in the matty for England campaign, everyone was convinced after that he would be going to France 98 world cup, but he still didn't get picked justifying Chris Sutton's decision not to play.

I was so happy after that game thinking he'd got his place. Utterly mental decision.

In fact, mental enough he wasn't in the team, but to never make the tournament squads?! Venables too fcked that one up. Ok he reached a semi final, but he had the advantage over other managers of a HOME tournament, and there is an odd line of success/failure in the euros, with few seeming happy with quarters and all seeming happy to reach the semis. So the difference is...ONE GAME.

I think we'd have won it with MLT. But it shows the stupidity. Get a gifted player, focus on what they can't do then pick david batty instead. England produces just as many technically good players, we've just spent years and years ignoring them in club and international football. Hopefully that's changing now but we haven't half wasted some talent.

Our game is all about huff and puff - ball control and vision come a poor second and until that attitude changes we will win nothing at international level.

The final act of me supporting England Football team that was..I remember I was incredulous that Matt didn't get picked for the world cup after that hat-trick. A complete and utter Joke and I still feel passionate about it, all these years later.

A travesty in modern times.

This, especially the highlighted bit. Its not an England team, its a merchandising clique.

Going to laugh at John Terry and Wayne Rooney f**king up our Euro 2012 campaign...

Same old same old with all the England squad - over paid bunch of prima donna's that in general have forgotten that its an honour to pull the shirt on.

The two things from this period that stick in the mind re. England is Gascoigne scoring the goal against the jocks in the Euro Championship (under Terry Vegetables), and the commentator exclaiming 'there is no other player that could have scored that goal' - me screaming at the TV that we had one (not even in the squad) scoring better every week! Then this England B debacle under Hoddle, when even if MLT has scored half a dozen he still wouldn't have been included. Just shows how blinkered successive England managers were, and if Le Tissier had accepted the offer to play for France he would have probably won 50 caps, and possibly World Cup and Euro winners medals. Just imagine for one moment a side with MLT and Zidane pulling the strings!...

The thing that I remember from that period of England failure was that it was really a straight choice between Matty and Gazza, us Saints fans and other 'football' fans around the country thought that we should take both to France '98 as it transpired we took neither and when we were looking for that something extra against the Argies even though Hoddle had MacManaman, Sir Les Ferdinand and Teddy Sheringham unused on the bench he introduce Gareth Southgate, David Barry and Paul Merson to help us advance to the World Cup Quarters, the rest as they say is history.

Seeing as I've brought up Gazza's omission I thought I'd share a memory of my meeting the 'great' man just weeks before Hoddle announced his squad for France. I was 'sparking' on an extension at the Meon Valley Hotel in the no-mans-land between us and 'them'. The skate Paul Walsh was having a testimonial at Krap Notarf and had booked his guest players to stay at this hotel. The morning after the game I looked down upon the car-park and saw Gazza, Chris Waddle and Chris Woods chatting. With the highs of Euro 96 still fresh in everyone's minds I was keen to talk to them. The thing that shocked me was that during the 20 or so minutes we chatted Gazza was chain smoking and I remember thinking that surely with such a big tournement looming he should have been looking after his fitness. The Duty Manager from the night before jokingly quizzed Gazza about the previous night. Apparently Gazza had invited everyone in the bar back to his room for a party and on finding the hotel kitchen closed he had ordered dozens of rounds of sandwiches for his 'guests'. Gazza could not recall any of it and it was obvious that he was suffering from his over indulging of the night before. Now I except that most of us here would totally abuse an all expenses paid stay at a country hotel but this was the nations darling only days away from Hoddle announcing his squad.

I remember Gazza appearing on Chris Evens TGIF show just after the press had exposed Gazza as a heavy smoker and drinker but still before the squad was announced and he walked on set with about 30 unlit cigarettes in his mouth. Basically he was saying that it was untrue what the press was saying and that he didn't smoke but I for one knew he was lying.

Do people here remember how Gazza reacted when Glenda told him he wasn't taking him?

France 98 squad:

David Seaman, Tim Flowers, Nigel Martyn

Sol Campbell, Tony Adams, Graeme Le Saux, Gareth Southgate, Gary Neville, Martin Keown, Rio Ferdinand

Paul Ince, David Beckham, David Batty, Steve McManaman, Darren Anderton, Paul Scholes, Paul Merson, Rob Lee

Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham , Les Ferdinand, Michael Owen

five centre backs, only one left and right back...I assume we were going for wingbacks? Next to no left side and Rob Lee?

The whole England thing in that era was a corrupt nepotistic jobs for the boys club. If you weren't part of the in crowd clique forget it.

Now,, international football is dying the world over, a succession of dreadful world cups and Euro tournaments, combined with the glamour teams like Brazil etc losing their mojo. Its all about Champions Legue and Barca etc now....
