View From The Top Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 I love old flags, something you don't see enough of at saints, some good examples on a website somewhere of a Chelsea one of "where were we when we were sh*t" That's a cracker. IIRC it goes on to say. "Probably your town, your pub and your end"
View From The Top Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 I have a Southampton FC Union flag from years ago, but it hasn't seen the light of day for years. BTW it's only a Union Jack when it's flying on a ship. Sorry to be all know-it-all but it's a pet hate of mine when a Union Flag is called a Union Jack. Correct, flown on the front of a ship in harbour from the jack staff.
dune Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 Correct, flown on the front of a ship in harbour from the jack staff. I've always wondered why Swansea fans have a lot of Union flags at games. I know they are nicknamed the Jacks aswell. Does anyone know the reason? dune Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 Imagine they claim that they're British instead of Welsh just to be different from Cardiff. There must be more to it than that. The Welsh have always been staunchly Royalist which is odd, and the Pembroke area in particular has traditionally been a beacon of Conservatism. rooney Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 We did not seem to care when we had Swedish flags in the Millenium Stadium at the Cup Final a few years back. Remember what the Vikings did to us!
Saint-Fred Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 I've always wondered why Swansea fans have a lot of Union flags at games. I know they are nicknamed the Jacks aswell. Does anyone know the reason? either after a famous dog- Swansea Jack- (who saved people who fell in the river), sailors or miners apparently...and I thought they all came from that pub next to the old ground which was named after the dog. A popular nickname for natives of Swansea is "Swansea Jack", and many people believe that this name also stems from the famous dog. Others claim that the derivation is from the nickname given to Swansea's sailors, who had a reputation as skilled and dependable mariners. Another theory is that the coal miners of nearby coalfields called the miners from Swansea "Jacks" because their lunch-boxes were uniquely made of Swansea tin and called Jacks. The9 Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 Swansea fans would tell you they are significantly more "welsh" than Cardiffians, if you want to base it on percentage of welsh speakers, ethnic origin, etc. Cardiff is a lot more cosmopolitan. As far as the "British" thing goes, I'm about the only person I know born in what is now south Wales that doesn't regard themselves as "welsh" first. There is no way Swansea are trying to be "British" before welsh. There might, possibly be something in the (Union) "Jack" thing, with them embracing their nickname, which is derived from the name of a pub in Swansea near the old Vetch Field ground, which itself is named after a local water rescue dog. "The Welsh" are no more "staunchly Royalist" than any other element of British culture... they do still like Prince Charles more than most though, admittedly. Saint-Fred Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 ooops if you mean why do they take the union flag my understanding is it's a mix of: 1) Some think the "Jack" part is for like the swansea jacks 2) They think it winds up Cardiff who the swansea fans think believe they are Wales and therefore Cardiff gets better treatment than Swansea. 3) Some just believe that it isn't that bad to acknowledge that the union flag includes Wales and that they don't need to be ashamed to use it! Katalinic Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 I attended a Welsh Cup game in the early 90's, Merthy Tydfil v Swansea. Cardiff fans turned up so I was treated to the sight of Merthyr fans fighting Swansea fans, Swansea fans fighting Cardiff fans and Merthyr fans fighting Cardiff fans. Just when it couldn't get any worse, I was in the Swansea end and some of their fans put up a Northern Ireland flag with "Swansea Loyal" written on it which started the Welsh nationalists off resulting in the Swansea fans then in-fighting with each other. It was madness and despite the attendance only being about 3000 was one of the most intimidating atmospheres I have experienced - being English and also a student at time I kept a pretty low profile. Oh, and for some reason the Swansea fans spent 15 minutes singing "Robbie James' wife's a lesbian" - I have no idea if she is.

I can see a bit of logic in 2) as well if they think it winds up up Cardiff fans, though everywhere else in Wales *****es about Cardiff's preferential treatment, I can't imagine there's much thought in it beyond that though. Also, the only way the Union flag includes Wales is as a constituent part of England since 1542. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_in_Wales_Acts_1535%E2%80%931542 - all acts of Union after 1542 include Wales as part of England by default. I don't see a dragon or any green in there...

I have numerous recollections of Wales internationals of the early 90s featuring endless fights between Cardiff and Swansea fans in and around the Arms Park, it took the team getting half decent and nearly qualifying for a World Cup and the £10 tickets to the Millennium Stadium to drown the inter-club rivalry in amongst an equally abhorrent cascade of 50,000 10 year old kids blowing plastic horns. Also, there's no easier way to start an argument in Newport than watching England v Wales in football. In rugby everyone's pretending to be welsh, but everyone's a plastic for football. Jonnyboy Posted 1 February, 2012 Share Posted 1 February, 2012 Yes they were. Just because they didn't commit genocide to the same level as the Nazis didn't make them less racist. They believed that they were the superior race, hence the atrocities they committed on the Chinese and then later the Allied troops. As we did to many nations throughout the "good old" British empire days.
