millbrooktonian Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I proudly took my Japanese flag up the Northam end last night,as I did for the Leceister game .When leaving the ground was told by steward that my flag and pole were too big and that I may find that those in control room may have something to say about this. He said this in a friendly way and said they were going to do something at the previous game but I had hid it, I replied that I had not,but there was not much to get excited about during the second half of that game . I cannot seem to find any regulations on website about restrictions regarding size of flags etc. However, thought Lee looked lively last night . It was good to see a like minded fan, with two japanese flags at the Chapel end last night .Just thought it a nice gesture to welcome a player who has travelled a long way from home,to a completely different culture .I would welcome some advice on this,as will be well peed off if a steward tries to take it off me at next game .
HK_Phoey Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Have to say a lot more people have been interested around the office about English Football and Southampton in particular in the last couple of weeks. The Japanese are not really into EPL in quite the same way as locals in other parts of Asia like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia, baseball is by far the most important sport here. Maybe it is just that they know I am aSouthampton supporter but definitely a different vibe here now. Still do not see the locals decking out the office with the flag of Saint George or Union Jack in a hurry though, or too many other Saints shirts when we do our monthly event when every one wears the sports colors to work day.
Saint_Jonny Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Club photographer obviously didn't mind...
alpine_saint Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Club photographer obviously didn't mind... Isnt the right-hand flag somewhat akin to taking a Nazi Germany flag (red background, white circle, black swastika) to the game ?
CFSFC Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Oh dear god. Bet our war heroes of world war 2 will be well happy.
a1ex2001 Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Isnt the right-hand flag somewhat akin to taking a Nazi Germany flag (red background, white circle, black swastika) to the game ? Now the Japs weren't horrible nasty RACIST scum during the second world war they were just horrible nasty scum.
alpine_saint Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Oh dear god. Bet our war heroes of world war 2 will be well happy. Exactly. Allied PoWs were treated horrifically by the Japs. I have no problem with the modern day Japanese flag, but I see a resonance of the Imperial Japanese flag with that of Nazi Germany.
sfc1971 Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Just before the JPT Final I contacted Wembley re Flags and poles. Answer I was given no poles are to be more than 15mm diameter or made of metal as can be seen as a offensive weapon, flags no larger than 1000mm x 750mm any larger is a fire hazard. The flag I took was twice the size permitted but i got rid of pole and had no problems. Common sense on the stewards part but you will allways get the odd C**T
pingwing Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Isnt the right-hand flag somewhat akin to taking a Nazi Germany flag (red background, white circle, black swastika) to the game ? Thought the one in his left hand (the right of the picture) was the imperial flag of the rising sun pre ww2 Japan. Probably not appropriate in the modern world
iansums Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Interesting looking at the press area last night, full of Japanese journos and one old Geordie.
Saintjersey Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Now the Japs weren't horrible nasty RACIST scum during the second world war they were just horrible nasty scum. Yes they were. Just because they didn't commit genocide to the same level as the Nazis didn't make them less racist. They believed that they were the superior race, hence the atrocities they committed on the Chinese and then later the Allied troops.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Interesting looking at the press area last night, full of Japanese journos and one old Geordie. I thought Merrington was with the commentary team not in the press box!

Probably not appropriate in the modern world Correct. When I wrote "right-hand" I meant on the right in the picture, not which hand was holding what.
RonManager Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 (edited) The flag with 'sunbeams' is the military/naval ensign. Causing controversy in the fashion/entertainment world - http://news.xinhuanet.com/society/2006-08/11/content_4949629.htm Edited 1 February, 2012 by RonManager
alpine_saint Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 The flag with 'sunbeams' is the military/naval ensign. Causing controversy in the fashion/entertainment world - http://news.xinhuanet.com/society/2006-08/11/content_4949629.htm Yep, you are right. It was banned in 1945, but re-introduced as naval ensign in 1954. Didnt know that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag Still found offensive across Asia though.
Dimond Geezer Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I think the naval ensign (the one with the rays) has the sun disk offset towards the pole, the old imperial flag had the sun central to the flag (again with the rays). It can't be seen from the picture which type it is. As it happens, I was at the game last night with a WW2 veteran who was actually tortured by the Japanese, he had no problem with the flags being there, it was him that pointed them out to me.
manji Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Every side committed atrocities during the war. Hiroshima , Dresden Fire-Bombing , US Army massacring Japanese prisoners on Iwo Jima. 3 million Germans died after WW11 finished. It was a brutal war. Should never be forgotten but it should not affect flags at a football match FFS.
La BoIS Saint Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I proudly took my Japanese flag up the Northam end last night. Each to their own
Secret Site Agent Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Oh, come on. Next we'll be complaining about Alpine choosing to live in the Birthplace of Hitler. It's flags that are obviously commercially availble that are being used in a positive way to welcome Lee, not to poke fun at him. Now, if we were talking a Swastika and waving it at a Jewish player or a German that would be different as we are educated that this is a no-no and getting hold of a swastika flag these days is very difficult, ( and a crime in Germany). And this from an ex-serviceman, and grand son and grand-nephew of a number of servicement who served in this theatre of war.
Golden Balls Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 If a steward says anything, just say you have contacted the club regarding the pole and they confirmed that it's not considered dangerous (which it isn't as its a very thin bit of wood). The steward will then be in over his head and walk away.
VectisSaint Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I look forward to the waving of the Yorkshire flag when Billy makes his debut. I suspect there will be no problems with the size of Yorkshire flags, as Yorkshiremen would only have very small flags to avoid wastage of material

In fairness, I dropped my objection as soon as I realised the Rising Sun is back in everyday use again; I originally thought it was taboo like the swastika.
Alain Perrin Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 If a steward told you your pole was too big you should be proud (especially as it was so cold last night).
Manuel Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Seems a bit odd that someone going to the bother of organising a flag to wave at the game, chooses the Military WWI version rather than the accepted flag of Japan. I wonder what point they were trying to make?

millbrooktonian Posted 1 February, 2012 Author Posted 1 February, 2012 Cheers guys, I will continue to take my flag and see if they take it any further. Had no such problem with my Swiss flag a couple of seasons ago , but could understand why they removed my banner during the P***PEY cup game last year, as it had PFC RIP on it, perhaps a bit provocative . Police were also unhappy with me being dressed as the grim reaper ! Anyhow onwards and upwards, lets hope Sharp and Lee bang the goals in...... COYR

It's the navel ensign - you can just see the edges of the sun before the flag folds backwards on itself and it's nowhere near the halfway point.

Orange Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I imagine its the fact its on a pole, my 12 by 6 flag i've only had a problem with size at Burnley away.
This Charming Man Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 That's not him. This picture is from the Chapel. He (as stated) sits in the Northam I should've guessed. The fact there is no normal looking person in that picture is a dead give-away.

What, like all the English mongs who have stolen a White Ensign from their ships flag locker and then got Mummy to stich the name of their home town on it ?

dune Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Now that is what you call a brilliant Imperial flag.
JRM Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Now that is what you call a brilliant Imperial flag. I love old flags, something you don't see enough of at saints, some good examples on a website somewhere of a Chelsea one of "where were we when we were sh*t" a mate of mine has a cracking union jack with Southampton FC across the middle had it over in Afghanistan with him , i've thought about getting one made up but cost puts me off, have a 12ft x 6ft st georges cross took to a couple of away games like Rochdale and Oldham last year
manji Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 I might fly the Taliban flag at the next game. Manji says it's ok... As far as I'm aware they didnt fight in WW11.
buctootim Posted 1 February, 2012 Posted 1 February, 2012 Have got a huge East German flag in a drawer. Doesn't seem to be many occasions to use it nowadays.
