Matthew Upson??

Funny reading the posts on here that have made a decision on what "everyone" thinks. so far it's been pretty evenly divided between, not bad and brings experience, poor and going downhill and somewhere in between. Why do so many posters label the people that disagree with them as "everyone on SWF"? aren't the ones that agree with them or fall somewhere in between "everyone on SWF" as well?

See the same thing with political discussion, people with thousands of posts posting together to say what "everyone on SWF" thinks, surely if you have thousands of posts, you and your friends are "everyone on SWF" too. There's at least one poster with over 25 thousand posts who's especially guilty of not seeing himself as typical of the voice of SWF. i think if you have over ten thousand posts, you are pretty representative of SWF opinion.

On stadium size, I've only seen a few people posting about needing an enormous stadium, but have grown tired of a few others with huge post counts claiming that's what everyone on SWF thinks.

I'm confused - you seam to be saying two opposite things at once - am I missing something?

I'm saying anyone with a huge post count, who posts on every subject going, has no reason to consider themselves separate from the general opinion of SWF. They make up a large part of it. for some reason a lot of them think they are separate from SWF opinion. For example, a certain poster quite often picks out somebody's over-enthusiastic or negative opinion and then holds it up to ridicule as "what everyone on SWF" thinks, but generally he's picking on a minority and his own opinion is probably more representative of the consensus of SWF.

is Upson that bad? Not seen much of him over the last two seasons, but give it a few months of our two current CBs trying to keep tabs on the likes of Rooney and Aguero and maybe he'll not look quite so bad. We could do with a bit of pace at fullback to help them out mind.

well, they were miles better than us last season....

Curious to know how you think they were "miles" better then us last season? They actually only won 11 games all season (only one more then Bolton who went down). Scored the lowest amount of goals in the whole league etc etc

I think the teams from say 10th to 17th are all very similar. In that group are the three teams who went up the season before. I'd like to think Saints would be amongst that group if we were in there.

So of course they are a better side right now but by miles? I don't think so. Of their squad I don't think there are many players that would make too much of a difference to our side. But i'm sure they would take Lallana,Jay Rod and possibly Lambert if they could from us.

I think Stoke are one of the teams who could be in serious trouble next year unless they get in some better midfielders to replace the older ones. They won 1 of their last 13 games. If the season had gone on 3 more weeks or so I think they would of gone down.

their whole back line was probably better than ours last season...we would have done very well if we win 11 games next season

They did alright, they have the same GA as Villa. But I think that is their problem. They are better at keeping out goals then they are at creating them. I like to think we are more like Norwich in that our defence is not out strong point but we are good at creating chances. So we will score lot's of goals but also let in lot's of goals. But if we maintain our current style of play and they maintain theirs then I think we will finish above them.

Upson is a left sided CB - would this mean him starting ahead of Jos of being cover for Jos? Or would it simply be down to who performs better in pre-season? Would be an interesting signing and good' date=' if he can re-capture former glories.[/quote']

It would be this. We dont sign "cover" players. This is idiotic and recipe for relegation. We sign players as good as or better to improve the squad and the team.

My guess would be cover for Jos. Does seem a little strange as neither of our first choice centre halves have much pace. i'm guessing upson doesn't either.

I just cannot see anything in this whatsoever. He is one of the main reasons why West Ham got relegated 2 years ago.

That simply isnt true is it. If it was the case why didnt Avram Grant drop him and replace him? Why was he still making the England squad? Why was he still deemed good enough for Stoke, a midtable side to sign him?

Literally all my close mates are West Ham, they said they only played him because they had noone else. I went to a few of their games with them in their relegation season, and he was absolutely woeful. Heavy touch, slow, didn't anticipate much, and didn't look interested. I really don't know how he got a transfer to Stoke, doesn't make sense to me, although he has hardly played has he ?

He was, like the rest of the West Ham squad under Avram Grant hopelessly unfit at the time. It would be interesting to see what Nigel Adkins could do with him.

Upson played in 10 Prem matches last season, 4 sub appearances. Featured heavily in Europa League and FA Cup though, so clearly not a starter for Stoke.

As a contrast, the injury-prone liability (especially at right back) that is Jonathan Woodgate played in 16 Prem matches.
