TBH, he was a liability for them last season - bet many were happy to get rid. Of course, doing a job at this level is a different proposition.

While I agree with you, this thread is about Upson not Ben Haim.

Upson would potentially be a great signing. If he can get back to fitness, then form will inevitably come.

The calibre he has must not be overlooked.

Adkins, crosby and the team could and i think would get him playing to his best again.

Would love it if we got him.

They seem to be repeating the rumour that was floating around in the morning that we were after Collins because Upson said no.

I think he might be a good signing, but nowhere near "signing of the decade" - or even "signing of the season" for that matter.

who do you think is both decade and season (almost worth a new thread with a poll!)

Very doubtful. I would self destruct if we signed Upson.

Another promise of self-annihiliation? Is your pointy thing facing the wrong way?

Matthew Upson is a terrible defender, he and Robert Green were the reasons for West Ham and England having an absolute nightmare of a defence the last few years. He's also too old to be considered long term as if you notice we tend to be signing for the long term.

Upson only played a handful of games, the overrated Terry and Ferdinand were to blame.

As was having Carson and James.

How was he in West Ham's relegation season?

Well alot of our experts on here think he was terrible, im sure they watched him every week. I dont think you can read too much into that as i dont think any West Ham player did much what with Avram Grant working his relegation magic on the team. He still played well enough for a midtable top flight club to want him last summer though.

He is 33 and it was only 2 years ago he was playing in the world cup. You dont become a bad player overnight. He'll bring a lot of experience to the side and will also be good for our young players to work with.

His pic on Wikipedia shows him with mad staring eyes. Not a good sign.......

Nooooooooooo, that is a good sign, we need a few bad ass bastards to sort the "superstars" of the prem out, as long as he takes a pay cut I'm sure he will do a job, and he doesnt fit into westspam plans because hes not a striker

Wouldn't be the worst signing ever but would be a bit meh.

I agree Dave, wouldn't be a terrible signing but I think we can do better. Hope the elbow is healing up ok.

Thanks - its not too bad. Had an interesting chat with Ron the other day, will fill you in later.

Agree re Upson - think he had a few injuries as Dave said above.

Wouldn't be as bad as everyone thinks - remember that when he was "p*ss poor" for West Ham he was actually a regular in the England squad, including scoring a goal in the World Cup!

Pretty sure he's only 32/33 as well despite seeming like he's been around since the 1940s.

Its a certainty that the club will sign a CB. The loan of Martin effectively confirmed that, leaving only Dan Seaborne as cover, and there must be some doubt about Dan playing in the Prem side. We've seen the result of slow CB's in recent years, the sad sight of Michael Svenssen when his comeback failed and the game at Peterborough when Seaborne gave away the fourth goal (I think it was). Jaidi not getting to play last season suggests Adkins will not want anyone who is no longer able to react quickly.

I wonder if they might sign two CBs one as first choice competition for Jos and Jose and maybe a younger one with future prospects. I'd don't know to what extent Upson has slowed down in the last 2xyears but he certainly won't be signed if Adkins has any doubts. I'm sure the club see the position as one where you can't take chances and if they saw Martin as too much of a risk for next season, they won't bring in a player who carries risk.

Funny reading the posts on here that have made a decision on what "everyone" thinks. so far it's been pretty evenly divided between, not bad and brings experience, poor and going downhill and somewhere in between. Why do so many posters label the people that disagree with them as "everyone on SWF"? aren't the ones that agree with them or fall somewhere in between "everyone on SWF" as well?

See the same thing with political discussion, people with thousands of posts posting together to say what "everyone on SWF" thinks, surely if you have thousands of posts, you and your friends are "everyone on SWF" too. There's at least one poster with over 25 thousand posts who's especially guilty of not seeing himself as typical of the voice of SWF. i think if you have over ten thousand posts, you are pretty representative of SWF opinion.

On stadium size, I've only seen a few people posting about needing an enormous stadium, but have grown tired of a few others with huge post counts claiming that's what everyone on SWF thinks.

In his prime he was a decent player. But he is at the end of his career now, going on 34 years old. Not really sure we should be looking at players who are a year or so from retiring?

I think it all depends on if it is a free transfer and if he will be happy sitting on the bench as cover for the other two. If he is okay with that then his experience will be very useful to the squad, especially the youngsters.

But I just don't think it fits in with the policy the club have shown. Have we bought in any 33+ year olds since we have been taken over? The only one I can think of is Jaidi but I think he was 32 and that was when we had no players in division three.

Could do far worse of course but just don't think he fits in with the clubs policy of youngsters or people in or around their prime.

He couldn't get a regular game for Stoke last season. Are Stoke rejects really what we're after?

Well stoke took our rejects, so maybe we are just returning the favour.
