Our new team with Billy Sharp starting?:

Possibly because it's not funny, but in the interests of education, I believe the reference is to ex-Man U and Leeds striker Lee Sharpe, and the fact that we could have (Tadanari) Lee (Billy) Sharp playing for us...

Ho, ho, and indeed: Ho.

aaah, i see now. :(

Guly's days are numbered. That is all.

Yep, can be very good on his day, but a pretty bloody awful footballer when he's not having a good day. A 'bit part' player from now on methinks.

And I must add that I wouldn't be the least surprised to see Jonathon Forte, Lee Barnard, and David Connelly all out of the club by the end of the summer. Football is a brutally harsh business that leaves precious little room for sentiment I'm afraid, even when at least two of those players have made significant contributions to getting the club where it is today.

Morgan & Chaplow in the middle....gulp....paper thin defensively ....better to let Chaplow run around out wide where we dont need the discipline of holding our shape as much. Morgan needs a grafter along side him i.e Cork. Chaplow on the right.

I'm pretty sure we beat West Ham with Chappers and Morgan in the centre.

(Without Chaplow):

Davies

Richardson Fonte Hooiveld Fox

Guly Hammond Cork Lallana

Sharp Lambert

Subs: Bilko, Martin, Morgan, Lee, SDR,

Your insane thinking Guly is a right midfielder, SDR and Punch is better than him in that position.

Defence i agree with...

SDR Morgan Cork Lallana

Sharp Lambo

I wouldn't even have Guly on the bench going from his form atm oh and it's going to get even colder so Guly wont be any good this month anyway, he hibernates during the winter.

I think you're a bit crazy starting with SDR. Guly is our second top scorer.

Guly has 2 goals from midfield this season. De Ridder has 4.

Thank you, least someone else knows the stats. Guly has been carried for too long now, SDR gives us pace, width and is willing to fight for the ball, Guly goes missing in the winter and now with Lee and Sharpe bought in and Punch is back and looking good and Chappers back in light training, Guly's days are numbered during the winter at least.

I disagree about Guly's days being numbered. He is still a decent striker at this level, but he isn't a midfielder IMO. I remember frequent complaints about his poor work ethic in midfield and he often left our right back exposed making runs into the box and then casually tracking back.

I honnestly think Rasiak would be the nearest Saints comparison in recent years. Good finisher and good with his head, but his attitude can be a little 'casual' at times. A useful player to have, but I'd no sooner play Guly RM than I'd have played Rasiak three. Guly is a decent striker, but Puncheon and De Ridder are both far superior on the wing IMO.

With Chaplow and Puncheon coming back, Falque, Lee and Sharp.. we have some serious squad depth! I dont even know what team Id pick.

If we win tommorow night the feel good factor is gunna be awesome

this!

reckon we have the best attacking squad of players south of the top 12 premiership!

Sorry but what's your point here? That we may not be able to pick our best 11 every week due to injuries?

I think most people agree with the "best side " on paper but compare it with those available just now; Chaplow, Fonte and Hooiveld on the injured list,

and to be fair, Lallana has been injured and was a little below par in recent games.

I think I might go along with the majority of selections already, but it's likely to be some weeks before we see those players, match fit and in form to play.

In the meantime, I'm glad we've got finally the two strikers, but we still need things sorted put at the back.

Hope NA comes up with someone tomorrow.

Fonte and Chaplow both trained today and I expect Fonte will start tomorrow.

Where's Jack Cork in all of this? One of our very best players in the first part of the season and looked genuine PL class, worryingly inconsistent since then.

Well chuffed with Sharp and Lee (once I've seen him play) but we are still left with 3 fairly similar midfielders now playing for one or two places. Reckon we will see an awful lot of rotation across the middle with: Deano, MS, JC, AL, JP, Gully, Falque, Chappers and SDR (and Holmes and the yoof) competing for 4 starting places and two spots on the bench. Effectively we can rotate our midfield pack every game without losing very much at all - if we can pull this off and maintain consistency it will be massively to our advantage. Have a hunch that Hammond will start most games in the centre; a fit AL is a given, interesting to see where we go from there?

have to disagree. Think we will start to see less of Hammond now in the (hopeful) run up to prem. Definately can't see him as a regular starter that is for sure.

Agree with the ainticipated rotation though.

We have a special squad now.

Hammond starting? Our weakest midfielder

Where are you getting that from? Vital cog for me - regularly picks up an un-noticed 7 and gets his share of 8's too - his problem (a little like Gully) is when he has one, he absolutely has one cf Leicester last week (just like MS, just like Cork, just like Conno, just like Gully did etc etc etc).

I bet NA keeps count and I bet Hammond's season avg over all games is equal to that of MS or JC.

Personally I have no beef either way, just saying my personal hunch is that NA will continue to play him; if he does I hope we will all get behind him cos I don't recognise him as our weakest midfielder and I wouldn't have thought NA does either - tho looking at Saturday's selection we could see a MS/JC combo tomorrow tonight LOL!

Davis

Richardson Fonte Hooiveld Fox

Chaplow

Puncheon Cork Lallana

Sharp Lambert

That's an interesting one and closer to my view - though surely you would want to swap Cork and Chaplow around - Cork is the more defensive holding player, Chaplow the box-to-box player. Another similar possibility might be this:

........................Davis.........................

Richardson....Fonte....Hooiveld.........Fox

.........................Cork.........................

..........Guly.......Chaplow......Lallana......

..................Sharp.....Lambert..............

Of course, we could just forget about defence and go for something like this:

Puncheon

DeRidder Connolly Holmes Reeves

Guly Barnard Lallana

Sharp Lambert Lee

Reeves gets the nod over Ward-Prowse as he used to be a defender and is now a striker-cum-winger, whereas Ward-Prowse has always been a midfielder. As for Puncheon in goal, hasn't he had experience there already? Or did I imagine that?

Right back is an issue - Richardson and Butterfield are nowhere good enough to play in the Prem - go for Nathaniel Clyne - fits the young, loads of potential, English, athletic model

People said right back was a problem in the summer. In fact people said Lambert wouldn't do it at this level.

How many people would have expected Russell Martin to be performing very well for Norwich in the premier league?

Exactly. With the right coaching he is a very very capable player, as we've seen this year. Probably what I'd call our ''unglamorous'' player of the year so far.

With everyone fit and available it is a really difficult to pick.

Personally:

Davis

Richardson

Hooiveld

Fonte

Harding

Puncheon

Chaplow

Schneiderlin

Lallana

Sharp

Lambert

Bench - Bart, Fox, Cork, Lee, Guly

agree with this. toss up at left back but otherwise my first 11 too.

(Without Chaplow):

Davies

Richardson Fonte Hooiveld Fox

Guly Hammond Cork Lallana

Sharp Lambert

Subs: Bilko, Martin, Morgan, Lee, SDR,

More or less agree, the problem is the RM position, where we seem to have huge competition :

Guly

Puncheon

Chaplow

SDR (Who for me is behind the other 3)

I would give Puncheon a couple more starting slots to see if his sharpening-up with more matches under his belt has an impact, put Chaplow on the bench to get a bit more recovery time, have Guly, Lee and Sharp rotate up-front, and drop SDR, unfortunately.

the 5 subs is a real pain, because I would also like to see space for Harding on the bench too.
