saints to win race to sign Jamie Vardy

Once or twice, yes.

It's just that your comments haven't been about Vardy so much as the strong likelihood that non-leaguers won't make it.

I don't disagree with the generic point but, as I've said, I think the lad has enough about him to be worth a punt. Yes, even at a million because IMO the financial upside of him "coming good" (and he has the tools) outweighs the risk, especially as he's English, and that adds a premium.

I can't see us agreeing to loan him back, who cares if Fleetwood get promoted?

If we dont sign Hooper (not so likely) or do sign Sharp (more likely) we won't be short of strikers, and the fee for a Conference player can't be that much...£250-500K ?

Fleetwood will (hopefully for them) win promotion ..and then have some capital to buy in some players for a new life in L2, meanwhile if he continues to score he's a good bet forus next season....and if he isn't, we'll get our money back by re-selling to a CC /L1 side...... win-win!

Not if Blackpool had a 750k offer turned down.

Blackpool's £750k was probably more like £250k down, £250k in 12 months and £250k dependent on goals / appearances etc

If we put down £500k and you can have him back for the next 4 months, to me that's a better offer

Apparently, Palace have already bid 750,000 (or possibly more) with a loan-back clause.

Went to the Yeovil v Fleetwood FA Cup 2nd round replay back in December. Vardy played that night, scored the second goal for Fleetwood late on. He came across as a player with a real eye for goal, very calm in taking the shot after being put through on goal. Also seems very confident, bordering on arrogance, celebrating right in front of the Yeovil fans with a look on his face that kind of made me want to give him a slap, and I'm by no means a Yeovil fan. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, a lot of strikers thrive on confidence. The old timer stood next to me was upset that Yeovil were beaten, but all he could say was that he thought Vardy was by far the best player on the pitch.

That didn't seem a good trait in Nugent the other day - Slap would have been too good. I wanted to kick the c**p out of him

At 25, age is not really on his side to make the jump, but if we sign him then so be it, he has a chance and hope he grasps it.

Most players making the leap from non-league are 19-20, although I suspect Graham Roberts might have been nearer mid 20's when he had the chance. Also remember the CB Martin Elliott leaving Oxford (Div 3 at the time) for Leicester (Div 1) when 26/7 . Thought that was a bit old when Souness also tried to sign him at the time, but wish we had signed him. (or Roberts for that matter)

If we sign the lad, I would be surprised if we bring another striker in before the window....unless we're clearing the deck for next season and intend to get rid of Forte, DC and Barney.

I imagine that is exactly the plan. I rate Connolly, but he will be 35 in June and wont be able to play in the prem again next year. Barney is a tryer, but I just dont think he is good enough for the Championship let alone any higher, ditto Forte.

If we want a prolific lad from non-league. Why not Kwesi Appiah from Margate. 32 league goals in 29 appearances so far this season. He's only 21 too, worth a punt, especially for the 300k that Blackpool had allegedly agreed for him.

Rasiak had scored something like 20 goals for us by January in the play-off season if I recall![/QUOT

....don't have stats. to hand but I think Rasiak did score 20 goals that season - but not by Janaury though.

Also he came to us from a Prem.side (Spu*s) and Vardy (topic of conversation on this thread) is still playing Conference.

Yeah went well for him. Looks like it was 14 years ago

http://www.ex-canaries.co.uk/players/paul.htm

I remember him as all the other Prem clubs were making big money signings and ours was a lad from Non-League. Got some stick for that lol.

We signed him at the same time as 5 other players, and they were all presented at the same time. I think the Manager at the time (Dave Jones?) blamed our poor performance on introducing too many new faces at the same time.

Among the others (I think) were David Howels, Mark Hughes and maybe Stuart Ripley.

Anyone want to add to that (or contradict it). My point being that it wasn't a case of we just signed a non-league guy whilst everyone was buying superstars (not that any of our other signings fell into the superstar category though! ;) )

I give you Man City's Tony Book who was 30ish when leaving non-league

I really think Tony Book deserves more than one line, Duncan. He played almost 400 games with non-league Bath City, before beginning League football with Plymouth (aged 30) in 1964, though it was rumoured he lied about his age. After two years, he moved to First Div. Man City (with Malcolm Allison as his coach) and played 8 years at Maine Road, and along the way won; The European Cup Winners Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, First Division title and Charity Shield medals in City's most successful period ever....and was still playing for Man.City aged 40. He stayed with the club in various capacities and took over as caretaker manager on several occasions. He was also voted Footballer of the Year (1969) aged 35, and still has some Honourary status with Man.City today.

and of course ..there was " Big Ron " Atkinson.

Played for Headington United (before they became Oxford United) right through the 1960's and was their captain from Non-League days and up 3 divisions into the

" old Div.2." in the space of 5-6 years, I think .

However, a little closer to home, let's not forget that Alan Pardew played c. 200 games as an amateur in various London clubs before joining Crystal Palace (aged 26).. and then went onto play around 300 League games with Palace, Charlton and later Barnet before retiring.

To add another Tony Caldwell signed from Horwich RMI to Bolton, admittedly when they were in the old 3rd division (ie L1). Can't remeber his age ,but he was certainly not a youngster.. mid 20's? He went on to be their leading scorer for several seasons I believe, and definitely scored 5 in one league match -- but then weirdly faded away again back to part-time football.

I guess planning ahead

Although if we get to the PL that'll be one massive jump in standard for him, and he wont be getting a couple of years to get his feet under the table

Quite. But if we've really paid that much for a non-league player he must be something special. Is that a record fee for non-league?

He does have an amazing goalscoring record. Could be worth signing, if its for a small fee. Although I'd have thought a loan to League 1 club for the rest of the season, not sure he'd benefit much if we sign him and then send him back to conference to get his experience. If he's ever going to play in the Championship/Prem then he'll need football league experience sooner rather than later, at 25 he's not going to improve a great deal, just needs to test himself and adjust to the higher leagues.

The loan-back is a condition the selling club is insisting on. It's not to get Vardy experience.

FWIW, from the one full match I've seen him play, I think his qualities are capable of making him successful at Championship level and may well be strong enough for the next step, especially with quality players around him.

If the Sharp rumour is true he's coming here as back-up but I think he might surprise people.

If true, this helps us in no way what so ever. Bizarre.

but of course, Lee and Sharp will be the first choices together with Lambert until the end of the season.

Assuming a positive outcome to his court case, Barnard may (possibly) go on loan for the rest of the season to get some sharpness (no pun intended) back into his game....and of course Connolly's one year contract goes out in June anyway.

If Vardy signs for us ...and continues his scoring exploits long enough to get Fleetwood into L2, then starts with us in August, he'll be good competition for a place.

Bearing in mind Ricky has 2 years left on his contract and will be 30 quite soon, we need to build a good strike force 4 even 5 good players to give us cover in case of longer term injuries, suspensions etc.

If TRUE..makes good sense to me, anyway.
