According to the non league paper saints have won the race to sign foward Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood. We will loan him back to them till the end of the season. He is a good goalscorer on the non league scene , time will till if he can do at a higher level , if the story is right.

Dunno how loaning him back would help us in the slightest.

Strange one. I know Prem clubs have been linked but not exactly one to excite the fans.

Out of interest what does the story say exactly? How reliable is this Non-League paper normally?

I know its not a link for us but this is a couple of weeks old ... 750K for a non league striker and that was rejected. Hate to think what sort of crazy figure they've put on him! Just shows how mental the transfer system has gotten in this country when you consider we spent about that on Barnard who had 20+ goals in the 3rd division that season!

Thought Blackpool had already done a deal, clearly not. Lots of people (including Celtic, Rangers, Blaclpool and Palace) were after him but the Fleetwood owner is only willing to let him leave permanently at the end of the season, hence the loan back arrangement. Palace had offered £700k evidently. Holloway was very fulsome in his praise

Is he quick?

He's certainly not slow but speed isn't his primary quality. He's two-footed and will go inside or outside, reading the defender as he takes him on. He's also good in the air, full of running, and quite physical - not easily pushed off the ball.

I was impressed enough to throw his name out in the "official unofficial January transfer targets thread" back on January 9 so I'm really pleased to read this (unconfirmed) report.

We've spent a million or more on players with far, far less potential than this guy.

I wonder if other clubs fans have as little trust in their manager and chairman as ours do.

'I've given it 5 seconds thought and I can't see why they've done this therefore (even though they've been through the whole process on this player) NA and NC are wrong and crap and...........'

Makes me want puke

:x

(Sorry to group everyone in that rant, obviously some of you don't make pathetic instant reactions..... I guess you could call that a pathetic reaction by me )

Luton apparently.

Yep and Fleetwood was five years younger when he went to Charlton and did have a good football education with Cardiff. Vardy has no such background. Fleetwood Town want a big price for him, and that's probably the only reason League One and Two clubs haven't gone for him.

Charlie Austin... Poole Town to Swindon ok he was 19/20

Matt Tubbs was 26 when he went from... Salisbury to Crawley and although he only stepped up a couple of leagues at first, hes showing he can still score against higher league clubs.

There are talents out there who may not get the break into league football til late, so although a gamble - isnt every transfer!?

How old is Matt Tubbs, 27/28? A bit of a non-league journeyman before going to Crawley and banging goals in for them.

People obviously see a lot in this Vardy lad, hence the interest. Never seen him play, but heard good things about the lad.

Having had the benefit of seeing Matt Tubbs about three or four years ago on loan for Bournemouth, I can tell you that he can be bloody awful.

I think he's doing well at Crawley because he's surrounded by players that are above and beyond the average quality of League Two teams. Crawley rendered the Conference uncompetitive last season thanks to their spending (which as it happens, will stop at the end of this season because their gate receipts aren't good enough, as they have admitted themselves) and I say that with 100% confidence. I interviewed an AFC Wimbledon player last season who said that from day one no one was ever going to catch Crawley. Their wage bill was huge and they had massive strength in depth.

Vardy may well be a prospect and yes there are examples of good players coming from non league. But most of them have dropped into non-league, not started there, and £1 million? Absurd if you ask me, all those prospects I talk about signed for league teams for non league money. Look at Tony Cascarino, signed for some corrugated steel and some tracksuits! Millwall had let him go as a kid, proving the whole dropping into non-league point.

I'm quite sceptical about this, and for good reason, once you look hard enough at the situation.

Let go by Reading allegedly because of disciplinary problems. One word from an academy manager and you may never play professional football again, so it may well have been the case something happened at Reading, they got rid, people warned against him signing and he was forced to go into non league.

Another one for dropping into non league camp.

Looks to have decent pace, gets himself into decent positions etc.

But the defending in that clip is just pathetic.

I know. Good to get at least a little peak at what he can do though. Who knows whether it's true or not. It's a touch disappointing after the Hooper link,

but with that said, the level of clubs interested in the lad means he must have something about him.

Holloway does have a good eye for a player, too.

So does Adkins in terms of forwards tbf. Hooper, Hayes, Keogh, Sharp....all brought through/brought by him IIRC.
