Gary Hooper

F*ck knows. Someone who has played and scored at a high level. Higher than the Championship or SPL anyway.

We have a whole squad of players unproven in the Prem, we don't need more IMO.

So did Norwich, and Swansea.

That's fantastic....so who would u suggest who is proven and scored at the highest level? Van Persie? Rooney? Aguerro?

Who is Atkins?

We'd be linked with Hooper repeatedly whether we'd bid or not. That much is clear.

Honestly not sure who'd I'd prefer of Hooper or Rodriguez.

well if you can't make your mind up ..we'll have Cortese buy both ... Happy with that ?

personally I'd prefer Matt Phillips!

Phillips is a totally different type of player!

I'd take Phillips and one of the strikers

I didn't say highest level you plumb, I said higher.

Someone like Yakubu who got 18 goals for Blackburn last year, could be worth a shout. Fletcher got 12 for Wolves. Someone from a decent foreign league might be a better option. I wouldn't rule out Hooper or Rodreguez but think we could do with at least a couple of players who we know can do a job in the Prem.

Not really a little mistake is it? Atkins is a ****ing weight loss diet. People should know how to spell the name of the most successful manager we've had in recent years ffs. And less of the sarcasm, it's the lowest form of wit, as they say.

Is it just about money? Pro footballers are oft accused of chasing pound notes but surely the lure of playing prem football over Scotch is a massive lure and incentive.

I just don't think Celtic can compete and any extension talks must be just futile efforts to up the price. How long is his contract btw?

Depends on his personality and ambition I guess. At Celtic he is probably the most talked about player at the biggest club in Scottish football. At Saints he'd be in the pack with lots of other big players. Big fish small pond or small fish big pond etc.

Hooper thinks he is underpaid (and from what I hear, he is). Wants a deal to get him to a sensible level. He is very interested in playing in the Prem - and is attracted by being back in England for recognition, etc. But he is also happy at Celtic where clearly things are going well for him, so it may well boil down to what they can offer. We already told his Dad (agent) what wages we would pay back in January. The contract talks are being pushed very hard by Celtic, as they have to hold onto him if they want to progress

If he had any sort of ambition he wouldn't hesitate in leaving Celtic for Premier League. He will be up against top drawer even world class players week in week out. Average player standard in SPL would be equivalent of League 1 mainly and NPC at best. Not saying we will be his best offer but surely he will want to test himself against the very best? MLT stayed loyal to Saints even though could have easily moved to bigger and better things but at least he was playing high standard of football most weeks.

On Twitter an hour ago that we have had an offer accepted, Simon Cox from WBA to replace him? Credible?

No. They wouldn't go from negiotating a contract with him one day to suddenly selling him the next. As of last night he was agreeing a new deal and played for Celtic vs Norwich.

Got a feeling he would have an interest in the move, but is also strengthening his contract negotiation position with Celtic. Clever move.

A recent interview with him.

When he walks into pretty much any building in Glasgow, he is mobbed.

Had he scored 51 goals in two Premier League seasons, he would be lining up for England against Norway tomorrow.

But as Hooper, from Loughton, Essex, has scored 51 times in two seasons for Celtic, he will be in the United States this weekend on holiday instead.

Despite being considered a footballing god north of the border, such feats in front of goal mean little down here.

When Roy Hodgson named his 23-man squad for Euro 2012, he claimed this country has a lack of natural goalscorers, even though the announcement came 72 hours after Hooper scored all five in the Bhoys’ 5-0 win over Hearts.

Scottish football is weaker than the Premier League but, even so, you have to wonder whether — at some stage — Hooper should have been given a chance in an international friendly.

Hooper, 24, who joined Celtic nearly two years ago from S****horpe for £2.4million, said: “Down here in England, people think I am Scottish.

“And it is very frustrating not to be considered for England. In the last four years I have scored 101 goals but I have not had a look-in.

“Of the 51 goals I have scored for Celtic, 50 have been scored inside the box so I think this shows I am a poacher.

“Stuart Pearce picked me for one Under-21s squad but I got injured and that was it.

“My dream is to play for England and in the Premier League. And also to play for Barcelona. That is the aim.

“It could still happen as I’m only 24. But it is difficult to get noticed for England while playing in Scotland. Fraser Forster has had 25 clean sheets for Celtic this season. It proves he is a quality English keeper. But he hasn’t been picked.

“But I have to be patient and I am happy at Celtic. I will play in the Champions League, which I am looking forward to. I have two years on my contract and we are in talks about a new one.”

The Champions League will be an achievement for a lad who was in Spurs’ youth team before being released, apparently for being too small, and started his senior career with Grays in Conference South.

Hooper wears No 88 — the year of his birth — and plans to keep that number throughout his career.

He said: “I have definitely come a long way since Grays reserves. Now I am playing for one of the biggest teams in the world. I wouldn’t have believed anyone had they told me this would happen.

“We won promotion with Grays, Southend took me on trial and gave me a contract. I never really got on, went on loan to Orient, played four games and scored two. Then I went to Hereford but at S****horpe I did really well.

“My dad, Gary, told me that Celtic wanted me. Neil Lennon came down to watch me against Reading and I scored.

“Middlesbrough were interested but as soon as I looked around Celtic’s ground, I said ‘yes.’

“Some great strikers have played here, such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton and John Hartson and I was hoping to follow in their footsteps. I don’t think the fans expected me to play many games but I have started most of them. I live in a nice area and it’s great — apart from the rain!

“I am grateful to the manager for the chance. He gives me a free role and I respect the way he has handled himself, particularly when that bloke came at him during a game last season.

“It has been a good season with Celtic winning the League and I hope we can do it again.”

But there is no denying the fact that Celtic’s title success was helped considerably by Rangers’ financial problems.

At the start of their meltdown in January, Rangers sold Nikica Jelavic to Everton and he made an excellent impact with 11 goals.

Looking at the stats, there is no reason Hooper could not have a similar impact given the chance.

In other words, the only way for Hooper could be back to Essex. Or certainly England.

Hmmm....some mixed message in that interview....in one breath he sounds almost desperate to play in the limelight of the Premier League as soon as possible and then in the next breath proclaims he's looking forward to the Champion's League with Celtic and the possibility of extending his remaining 2 year contract.

At the age of 24 I would suggest he ought to be looking to move sooner rather than later if he wants to stand a chance of knocking on the England international door...

It would not surprise me in the slightest if he was a Saints player before the start of next season.

I was reading that interview (albeit in the Sun!). Sounded very promising IF we are in for him as I'm sure it said his dream was to play in the premier league, for England and for Barcelona. Reading between the lines I got the impression he knew he'd have to move if he wanted to be considered for England. However, it didn't have the bit about negotiating a new contract/playing in the champ league with celtic as the Sky link does.
