Itchen_block4 Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 Davis Richardson, Martin, Fonte?, Fox Guly, Schneiderlin, Cork, Falque Lambert, Connolly Bart, Harding, Hammond, Puncheon, Lee Lallana in for Falque and put Falque on the bench instead of Puncheon. Puncheon apparently was good against Millwall, but he came off knackered and its no surprise as he hasn't played for so long. He needs to be brought back gently to avoid an injury. Wade Garrett Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 Not too sure about Martin and Fonte together at the back. They are both right-footed and Martin looked really uncomfortable playing as the left-sided CB earlier in the season. If we sign Collins in time, he might be thrown in straight away. James Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 DAVIS RICHARDSON FONTE MARTIN FOX PUNCHEON MORGAN CORK LALLANA/DE RIDDER LAMBERT GULY That would do nicely. As others have said, I think the outcome depends on us taking an early lead, too many times in recent games we've started sluggishly and been punished (where we weren't punished earlier in the season) we can't afford to let that happen tomorrow. Wade Garrett Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 An overwhelming majority of the best centre back partnerships now and throughout history have been both right footed. True, but Martin did struggle on the left side.
Ken Tone Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 True, but Martin did struggle on the left side. And Fonte also looks uncomfortable on the left. It is an issue. But maybe Martin's continuous and continuing improvement includes learning to play on the left too.

SaintNeil90 Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 Pretty sure as long as a Sharp signs before midday tomorrow he can play against Cardiff. The only reason it has to be 12pm on Friday for weekend games is because Saturday is not a normal working day where as Tuesday is?

Hope I'm wrong. I really don't get this. Based on what exactly? Barnard was better than Guly last season and Guly is the 3rd top scorer in the Championship. Saint Fan CaM Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 Cannot see Sharp not starting alongside Lambert unless he has been bought in on the understanding that he's Rickies stand-in. Strange thing is, where does that leave Lee, the only international striker in our front line? If I were him, I would be wondering whether I would be getting a game atall! S-Clarke Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 Chaplow, Lallana and Fonte clearly in full training as shown in the video preview for tomorrows game. Now it's just a case of how ready they are for match action.

The9 Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 I can't see any problem starting a match fit striker, doesn't matter if he's not used to the system, etc as losing the ball in the attacking third is nothing like as problematic as it would be for a defender - you can afford to be creative and unexpected, and it takes away the predictable side of our game at just the right time. sibster Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 I see a lot wrong with playing Billy Sharp tomorrow. Given that he signed a permanent deal after the noon deadline we would end up with a points penalty for fielding an ineligible player!! As for the team hopefully Chappers will be back firing on all cylinders and we can get the win that would restore a 4 point gap over 3rd place. sibster Posted 30 January, 2012 Share Posted 30 January, 2012 Sadly not S-Clarke. Loan signings are permitted up til 3 hours before kickoff but any permanent deals must be ratified before noon on the day before the match. The following is cut and pasted from the FL's website and doesn't appear to distinguish between weekend and midweek matches: 40.2 Subject to Regulations 40.4 and 40.5, a Player will only be eligible to play in a match organised by The League if the appropriate forms for his registration or the transfer of his registration (other than those referred to in Regulation 40.3) are received (including by facsimile) and found to be in order by the Executive by 12.00 noon on the day prior to the date of such match. Shame really as it looks like we will have to rely on our Japan International to fill the gap for the time being!!

He won't be able to play in the replay vs Millwall, but is fine for the rest of the competition if Saints go through. RULE 15 (f) All players must have been eligible to play in the original tie in order to play in a replayed or postponed match; however a player who has been suspended according to the disciplinary procedures under the Rules of The Association may play in a postponed or replayed match after the term of his suspension has expired. shurlock Posted 31 January, 2012 Share Posted 31 January, 2012 I understood Martin was MotM at Millwall - a bit Harsh to drop him surely!! He was an excellent - and am quite happy if he plays. Just think we're going to see quite a lot of possession tonight and expect Cardiff to stick a lot of men behind the ball. Think its set up for the FBs to get forward and Harding offers more there. Similarly, don't know if there's the same need to go full metal jacket with two big CBs covering Miller. Of course, it might just man that Martin starts and Fonte pushes a bit further up as he is capable of doing. Which is fair enough.

Subs Bart, Harding, Chappers, Lee, Puncheon/SDR Starting the "in the hole" formation gives him the options to change it later RL drops back better than Guly/DC did when we played it against Leicester. shurlock Posted 31 January, 2012 Share Posted 31 January, 2012 Be crazy if they did as Bristol & Leicester steam rolled us recently by playing pressing football. They'll definitely press us in midfield and they have a very disciplined midfield but they'll let us have plenty of possession in our own half and one of our CBs will provide the extra man. From what I remember they aren't the quickest of sides.
