Minty Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 Lots of positives, players coming back, youngsters getting experience. Martin very good today, Foxy also played well in an unfamiliar position. Reeves great pass to Harding before the goal. Good to have Puncheon and Barnard back but have to be careful not to push them too hard after so long out. De Ridder taken off because of his tight hamstring. Fonte should be available for selection Tuesday. Hooiveld unlikely. No comment on officials whatsoever. We never got a grip on the ball to pass it, a little bit of counter attacking, great cup tie, but we're still in the hat. (Re: transfers) See what happens - I think history shows that a lot happens in the last few days of the the transfer window so let's see what happens. Maybe some players who we thought would 'cross the line', haven't happened for whatever reason. Chairman has been great, working very hard behind the scenes an continues to do so. Did the best I could!

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 Nothing about Danny Collins then? Thought that was all done bar the shouting according to that journo? Wonder who the players we missed out on are? Usual suspects like Sharp or Hooper or other more obscure targets? Good that Jose is back for Tuesday. Minty Posted 28 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 28 January, 2012 To be honest, while I know journos have a job to do, we should all know by now that Adkins gives nothing away and if anyone is expecting him to they clearly haven't listened to him before. Liquidshokk Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 Ditto, lots of F5ing over the next couple of days!!! Spoke to Nicola about transfers as we were leaving from the dinner Thursday and he explained about how it's not always straight forward getting the players you want but when questioned about the rumour that two signings are progress he was more interested in where I had heard that rather than denying it or letting on anything.. During the meal he was quick to point out that we have lots of players coming back into the team and compared the number of players we have overall with Barcelona and other successful clubs. Don't think it is believed that there is a serious requirement for more players, and have to say I agree with that. It's all going to come together now as we push for promotion imo. That said, Nicola is insisting that we want to win the league, not just get promoted so who knows if it will be regretted if a lack of signings becomes a cause of us not being promoted..... If we're planning for promotion, next season in the Premiership we really need to raise the bar and be preparing by having players capable of staying up. Solent do not really go for the 'killer' question though as they want to retain a cosy relationship with the club, and appearing to 'ruffle' NA or the club too much might lead to more restricted access to interview etc.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 Just watched the 6min interview on SaintsPlayer and it seems pretty clear to me that they thought they had a few deals sorted that fell through at the last second. Then Adkins was asked about Danny Collins and he didn't want to give an answer so that one seems sure to be happening as far as I am concerned. We've got 20+ games to play in 3 months which is an incredible amount. Looks like we're trying to give ourselves the best chance to overcome injury, suspension, and loss of form with strength in depth. Squads - including those of teams at the top with us - are going to be considerably tested over the rest of the season and I'm not too worried about the Millwall replay as hopefully it becomes a platform for players to get match fitness etc. and we'll have the squad that makes the game a very useful exercise. Dalek2003 Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 We don't need lots of players but one real quality statement of intent signing would go down well! This is the key. We have fallen into the trap before of having a large bloated squad of very average players. One really good player is easily worth three good ones. Ricky is a classic example. The other thing is you can always sell on quality getting your money back whereas average players devalue quicker than a brand new car !

up and away Posted 28 January, 2012 Share Posted 28 January, 2012 Nothing different from the close of the summer window. Bringing in all these players sounds like he's fobbing off the fans by indicating we don't need anyone. Just need to be patient and put our trust in everyone. I didn't like the bit about there's always the loan window. If we're planning for promotion, next season in the Premiership we really need to raise the bar and be preparing by having players capable of staying up. I believe by now we have more than enough feed back and information to see how things are going to pan out. We have money to buy players, even to the extent of Leicester but we are not prepared to pay Premier wages until we reach the Premier. What ever players we buy will have to fit within a wage structure that can be maintained without doing any damage to the club financially in the short, medium or long term. I don't have any issues with this even to the extent of being in the NPC more than predicted. I enjoy the NPC, with my only fear being we get picked apart by the Premier. With the set up we have I feel we should still be forward moving without having to take the risks that got us into our current position. Very few clubs are debt free in the NPC , meaning we can spend far more of our budget on the playing side, although shy of those with a good parachute or the likes of Leicester. We have had such a great extended start to the season I feel we have actually got ahead of ourselves. By that I mean we are that close to achieving promotion it looks logical to go out and buy a couple of players for £10-15M and the wages to boot. But that is exactly the kind of actions that can return us from whence we came, either up or down if things don't work out. Everything here indicates that Cortese is in it for the long haul and not prepared to risk the future with what looks to many as a golden opportunity. The adherence to a wages structure, the money and development of the Academy, the introduction of the youth into the first team set up all indicate the long term. Many fans would look at the signing of Falque and Lee more as a gamble than a total positive and that looks about right. Spurs unloaded Falque on a hit or miss basis and it's difficult seeing that one bear fruit, with the added problem he is taking up valuable space. Either he or Lee could do the business, but it's definitely not the gold plated option of moving forward. Again I have no problem with this and I can see Lee working out well. It's just working within our set limits that both Adkins and Cortese understand and fully accept. No one is fobbing us off, we still have excellent opportunities and finances to back that plan. No one has ever indicated it would be otherwise, we just got a liking to that early success and the Leicester game painted a different picture. Yep just about sums it up, were in a comfortable position, why risk our entire future just to dash up to the PL, we'll get there when were ready. I see no point in spending huge amounts (for us) failing in the PL and ending back in the NPC with players on big money we cant really afford. I for one am pretty happy with the way our club is being run, with sustainable ambition and have every faith in NC and NA to get things done, just may or may not be this year. This also brings me onto my next point. From the limited exposure we get i've quite enjoyed being in the NPC, at least were in with a shot of winning it, its very competitive but with our tremendous support a league we can continually challenge for. Once we get to the PL will we be able to say the same. Will we be like last time, a season long struggle just to stay in it with the odd cup run, spending enourmous sums of money, or will we get the backing from the Liebhers to seriously compete for at least european football. I guess only time will tell wot our future holds, with the exposure and money that is the PL it might be a worth while investment for them to ensure we become succesful, maybe not. I was a lot more confident about our future with Marcus at the helm but as ever am always optimistic. Whatever happens this season, i'll be happy and proud of our acheivements this season but only as long as we stuff the skates. Onwards and upwards. What else can we expect however? If we've made good efforts to sign players but they don't happen for some reason, then what next? Just because we want something to happen, doesn't mean it will. And frankly, sometimes, we just have to deal with that. (If it turns out to be the case) And if fans can't deal with it, what do they propose? Capel Saint Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 There has been no mention of Sharp since it was alleged Saints put in a bid a couple of days ago. Could a deal be in the offing? Also the speculation about Maynard going as he is out of contract in the summer and Bristol City want to cash in before then, has also gone quiet since Wigan pulled out/didn't put a formal bid in (delete least plausable). Perhaps Saints are doing a deal for him on the quiet.

I would say, if we haven't signed the established name the club have alluded to us seeking, then we have been duped & I question if we ever had the intention or this whole flurry of rumours, breaking of media silence & playing the media was all part of an elaborate hoax emanating from the club. Gordon Mockles Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 anyone ever thought that the players are there, and its just the way they are paying that needs attention? In a word, no. I believe we have a few that may cut it in the league above (Ricky, Fonte, Cork, Morgan & Lallana) but the remaining squad fall short in my view. I believe Adkins also had the majority playing to the absolute peak of their ability hence the significant dip in form (plus injury, we've been playing poor since Nov) so, to me, that signifies an extensive overhaul. Unlike many of this board, I don't believe we have a squad anywhere near competing at the next level which is why I am both shocked & disappointed at our lack of decisive transfer movement. If the club have a different belief, then if we were promoted, I fear for a rude & embarrassing awakening in the PL.

Ewell Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 What does 'decisive transfer movement' look like? I would say signing an international striker, a hot prospect winger with fantastic pedigree and the impending transfer of an international central defender from the Premier League. Added to that we now have a player who has been a success in the Premier League last season back in the squad after a year’s absence! If West Ham had done this kind of business most would be moaning why haven't we!
Gingeletiss Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 We really do have some truly negative fans amongst us. Four signings so far since Christmas, with rumours of this Collins lad as well, this is still not good enough for some, they would have us spending untold millions just to feed their overated expectations. Whereas, we have a chairman, who runs the club within a budget that we can live with whilst in the Championship. We are not a team who played in the PL last season, and have the benifit of parachute payments, we are a team who came up from L1. Our fans eh!! St Jim Posted 29 January, 2012 Share Posted 29 January, 2012 I can forgive you for not having a clue what you are talking about, because of your location. So you are off the hook. Now Minty, have you actually seen how well we can play? Or are you just going to slag us rotten because astonishingly we have had some serious injury problems and our top striker out suspended and have had a rough patch? I really f*****g hate some of our fans and at times wish we could f*** off back to being sh*t in League One as gradually more and more of these c*nts are coming out of the woodwork and it is really getting on my wick. Spoilt bloody children some of you. I have to disagree. I don't see how Minty complaining about fickle posters who whinge and are dismissive of the clubs ambition just because we've not signed Messi means we are spoilt children - don't get your point. Also just because I live in Australia doesn't mean I can not make my own mind up about some of the posts on here. My comments on Minty's posts were specifically around the highlighted quotes: I'm still struggling to understand how people can be 'shocked... at our lack of decisive transfer movement' and seemingly cannot accept that sometimes, no matter how much we (NA included) might want a marquee signing of clear intent, sometimes it doesn't happen. What does 'decisive transfer movement' look like? The window is still open, there is still opportunity, but I sense some people are sharpening knives and looking to dish out blame already... There does seem to be a number of posters on here who can not accept the fact that no matter how much we try to sign a top draw player it sometimes doesn't happen due to numerous reasons. From what rumours I have read it appears that some of our failures to sign players is because we won't pay over the odds on price or wages but that sits fine with me as I'd like to think that the club is not going to throw cash around just to get certain players because I have very vivid memories of when we were in admin. It doesn't mean that we're no being ambitious. Also as Minty mentioned the window is still open for a couple of days so we still have opportunities to sign as required.
