Favourite Lyric

If you are a musician like myself, you think about lyrics in songs and what they mean. So... what is your favourite or what means most to you?

Mine is either 'I could deny, but i'll never realise. I'm just chasing rainbows, all the time' or 'It’s easy living in a bubble, no complication or trouble. But it’s hard to have responsibility. And judging by you, a personality'

A small selection:

"I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes,

And for that one moment I could be you.

Yeah, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes,

You'd know what a drag it is to see you."

Bob Dylan, Positively 4th Street

"They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom"

Leonard Cohen, First We Take Manhattan

"Her words still dance inside my head,

Her comb still lies beside my be.

And the sun comes up without her, it just doesn't know she'd gone,

Oh but I remember everything she said."

Brass Buttons, Gram Parsons

Same old boring Sunday morning. Old mans out washing the car.

Satiurday Girls work in Tesco and Woolworths

Wear cheap perfume cos it's all the can afford.

Saturdays kids live in council houses,

Wear v-necked shirts and baggy trousers,

Drive Cortinas fur trimmed dash boards,

Stains on the seats - in the back of course!

Just a selection of the many that go round and round inside my head.

In and out of Wandsworth with their numbers on their names.

It's funny how their Missus' always looks the bleedin' same.

Get out of the way, quick.

I think I'm turning Japanese.

And so it's my assumption

I'm really up the junction.

I got a job with Stanley

He said I'd come in handy

He started me on Monday

So I had a bath on Sunday

I worked eleven hours and bought the girl some flowers.

I took her to an incubator

Where 30 minutes later

She gave birth to a daughter

Within a year I'll walk 'er

Already some of my top 10 up on here, but always liked the lyrics from Is she really going out with him by Joe Jackson. Includes

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street

and

Tonight's the night when I go to all the parties down my street.

I wash my hair and I kid myself I look real smooth

They smelt of pubs and wormword scrubs and too many right wing meetings............pure gold.

Wow. Ive loved that song for 30 years and always thought the lyrics were "They smelt of pubs and wormword scrubs and too many right wing beatings". Totally changes the image it conjures up.

Kris Kristofferson

Sunday Morning Coming Down

Well I woke up Sunday morning,

With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,

So I had one more for dessert.

Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,

And found my cleanest dirty shirt.

An' I shaved my face and combed my hair,

An' stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before,

On cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'.

But I lit my first and watched a small kid,

Cussin' at a can that he was kicking.

Then I crossed the empty street,

'n caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken.

And it took me back to somethin',

That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk,

Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.

'Cos there's something in a Sunday,

Makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothin' short of dyin',

Half as lonesome as the sound,

On the sleepin' city sidewalks:

Sunday mornin' comin' down.

In the park I saw a daddy,

With a laughin' little girl who he was swingin'.

And I stopped beside a Sunday school,

And listened to the song they were singin'.

Then I headed back for home,

And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'.

And it echoed through the canyons,

Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk,

Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.

'Cos there's something in a Sunday,

Makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothin' short of dyin',

Half as lonesome as the sound,

On the sleepin' city sidewalks:

Sunday mornin' comin' down.

Perhaps the greatest love song ever written, "Gorecki" by Lamb

If I should die this very moment

I wouldn't fear

for I've never known completeness

like being here

wrapped in the warmth of you

loving every breath of you

still my heart this moment

oh it might burst

could we stay right here

till the end of time until the earth stops turning

wanna love you until the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

all this time I've loved you

and never known your face

all this time I've missed you

and searched this human race

here is true peace

here my heart knows calm

safe in your soul

bathed in your sighs

wanna stay right here

till the end of time

till the earth stops turning

gonna love you until the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

the one I've waited for

all I've known

all I've done

all I've felt was leading to this

all I've known

all I've done

all I've felt was leading to this

wanna stay right here

till the end of time till the earth stops turning

gonna love you till the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

the one I've waited for

the one I've waited for

wanna stay right here

till the end of time 'till the earth stops turning

gonna love you till the seas run dry

I've found the one I've waited for

the one I've waited for

the one I've waited for

'Living is easy with eyes closed...misunderstanding all you see'

John Lennon

Don't talk of love,

But I've heard the words before;

It's sleeping in my memory.

I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.

If I never loved I never would have cried.

I am a rock,

Paul Simon

I can't answer the questions you ask me,

I don't know what to say.

The answers are somewhere lost in the stars

when the night has turned to day.

But I know if the silence of night could be here,

It would drift through my soul and calm all my fear

And I could reach out and draw you so near to me

Touch me and warm me and I will lie still.

And all that you ask me to give you I will

One living moment we'll have for our own.

A brief flash of time that we spent all alone.

But you ask me for nothing and give what you can

And we're wrapped in a pillow of sleep once again

And my memory drifts through the universe when we are one

Closely we're falling through time

And the earth will turn in the silence of space,

always in motion yet always in place

And all things will change yet remain what they are.

And far will be near and near will be far

And the ages will darken and blend into time

And all that is poetry will no longer rhyme

But our moment together is forever sublime

For the time has arrived when we must understand

That we're lost in a void on this sad speck of sand

And nobody knows where we are, no one cares

And the tears that we shed in the dark no one cares

And the madmen who plunder this world for their fame

Have forgotten that no one remembers their name

But time and the universe are always the same

Closely we're falling through time

Don McLean

Too many more...realised that before filling the thread...and before I even start on Leonard Cohen!

A couple - as sooo many... but

Early one morning teh sun was shining

I was layin' in bed

Wondered if she had changed at all

if her hair was still red

Folks they said our life together

sure was goin; tobe tough

they never did like mamma's home made dress

Papa's bank book wasn't big enough...

..like two passing ships, the spaces in between... leaves room... for you and I to grow

and the pump dont work, cos the vandals took the handles

This song meant a lot when I was a teenager!!!

Oceans apart day after day

And I slowly go insane

I hear your voice on the line

But it doesn't stop the pain

If I see you next to never

How can we say forever

Wherever you go

Whatever you do

I will be right here waiting for you

Whatever it takes

Or how my heart breaks

I will be right here waiting for you

I took for granted, all the times

That I thought would last somehow

I hear the laughter, I taste the tears

But I can't get near you now

Oh, can't you see it baby

You've got me going crazy

Wherever you go

Whatever you do

I will be right here waiting for you

Whatever it takes

Or how my heart breaks

I will be right here waiting for you

I wonder how we can survive

This romance

But in the end if I'm with you

I'll take the chance

Wherever you go

Whatever you do

I will be right here waiting for you

Whatever it takes

Or how my heart breaks

I will be right here waiting for you

Waiting for you

Mother, mother

There's too many of you crying

Brother, brother, brother

There's far too many of you dying

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

Father, father

We don't need to escalate

You see, war is not the answer

For only love can conquer hate

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Talk to me, so you can see

Oh, what's going on

What's going on

Ya, what's going on

Ah, what's going on

In the mean time

Right on, baby

Right on

Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong

Oh, but who are they to judge us

Simply because our hair is long

Oh, you know we've got to find a way

To bring some understanding here today

Oh

Picket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Talk to me

So you can see

What's going on

Ya, what's going on

Tell me what's going on

I'll tell you what's going on - Uh

Right on baby

Right on baby

And:

Oh, mercy mercy me

Oh, things ain't what they used to be

No, no

Where did all the blue sky go?

Poison is the wind that blows

From the north, east, south, and sea

Oh, mercy mercy me

Oh, things ain't what they used to be

No, no

Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas

Fish full of mercury

Oh, mercy mercy me

Oh, things ain't what they used to be

No, no

Radiation in the ground and in the sky

Animals and birds who live nearby are dying

Oh, mercy mercy me

Oh, things ain't what they used to be

What about this overcrowded land?

How much more abuse from man can you stand?

My sweet Lord

My sweet Lord

My sweet Lord

A couple of my favs

Silverchair - Across the night

Never seen the sunrise

From higher points than sunrise

I don't want to be lonely

I just want to be alone.

Inme - Myths and Photographs

And now I know why I had so much doubt in myself

You pick me up and dust me off and put me back on the shelf

Your about as hopeful as a cyanide pill, it's always pretty scary when your not quite at the top of the hill

Take a cheap shot 'cause I don't give a ****, this band of brothers capsizes and rolls round with it

Reclaiming the shadows that we cast, kick-start this beast real fast
