Chairman's Dinner

Saint-Armstrong

Recommended Posts

Guys, are we going to have this thread every time Nicola hosts a dinner for someone?

Seriously, we appreciate the reminder but we all know you're a bunch of weird, poisonous, inadequates so there's really no need.

I don't know Chez. I expect that's not the case. I don't see why someone couldn't raise a point like that. I would be surprised if you weren't able to do so - the raison d'etre of the evening surely dictates that you should.

The effect the scenario probably does have is that people raise the point in a measured and calm way rather than using the opportunity to have a rant on the radio and make a tit of themselves. It probably also allows for a slightly more candid response than a public forum as it affords the opportunity for a dialogue to occur - which can be tricky when addressing a crowd as people are more likely to interrupt or ask about something completely different.

Spot on - never understood this 'can't ask a tricky question' line. Always found that its not content of the question that turns people off but the tone in which its asked - and tone is much easier to control in an informal setting.

The trip was brilliant...such a life changer! Would strongly recommend taken up the oppertuinity if offered!

As for signings we were giving a maybe, Nicola then went to say he was expecting a phone call to do with transfers...so you never know, but a lot of bids have been accepted this January (big bids) but wage has come into it and Nicola refuses to budge for no player! Lallana is also fit again, and Jason could start Saturday!

Interesting, that. At some point, if and when we go up, that whole planning basis goes up. We can't moan about the blue few paying Xk a week and then moan at Nicola when he doesn't. It's a fine line between panic buy and shrew business, and the're dammed if they do.....

Cheers - good stuff. :-)

He already has a wage budget in mind, I'll use his words, "for WHEN we go up" so no need to worry about doing a Pompey!

Cue about three posts saying the club complaining isn't ambitious because they won't pay players £40K a week (if Pompey can be liquidated so can we), another three saying we haven't got any money, at least four saying Cortese is evil, one saying we will finish 17th and 'I told you so', one contemplating ending it all and probably a couple that appear to be written by Hitler with reference to Kenya and then a couple more defending these views.

I for one would rather be stable and finish 12th than bankrupt and lose the play-off final - but hey ho each to his own.

I would venture that is the majority view amongst Saints fans. (outside the fantasy world of the Saints Web Forum of course) ;-)

This is exactly what will happen when all 90% of the people that use this forum would probably like to know is a few more details from the chap that had the audacity to attend the evening and have a good time.

Instead we'll have to trawl through the avalanche of ill-founded vitriol and speculation in order to locate the minutiae of posts that are actually of some interest. I will probably then continue my day in a sense of bewilderment and dismay that the majority of fans on this forum seem unable to just accept certain things as unknown, and debate points of interest in a rational manner. In fact, I know that it's not the majority of fans, but because certain posters comment so much you are left with that impression.

Saintsweb in microcosm. Made me laugh.

Amused me too. Not sure which category I belong to. I fit all of them at one time another, except the category Dalek has all to himself.

I admire his confidence and I think he's doing a magnificent job. But for me it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. A couple more quality signings and I'll share his optimism.

If we put in big bids for players we have to be prepared to pay big wages.

i see your point but we have no idea the figures involved. If we are offering upto 25 now and say 40 in the prem i would say that is fair and very reasonable. If player X is asking for 40 now and 80 in the prem then i would say that is not fair or reasonable....for any of the 'linked' players. If its messi thats a good deal!

But if I've understood it right, this doesn't just apply to one player/bid, but several, so maybe the problem lies with us and not the players? We went after various targets in the summer and various targets in this window and don't seem to have got who we wanted reading between the lines. If you put a "big bid" in for a player, you can usually expect to pay "big wages". Not necessarily a dig at NC before all the usual start crying, more of a hypothetical question?

I'm sure NC isn't stupid enough to not offer decent wages, but i bet more of it is linked to performance than at most clubs (obviously i don't know this fo sho, just speculating). Also, I dare say that avaricious Agents also play a part - "Fack that boy, you can get a bigger wedge than that, they've got loadsamoney!", etc etc.

Probably the usual last minute cock bashing whill throw up a few deals.

Wonder if the swipe card system will mean the re-introduction of membership? It would seem pointless having s/t holders using a card and non s/t holders still being given paper tickets.
More likely they'll just have a regular ticket with a barcode like most places with electronic swipe systems these days. Could be wrong though.

You're right, I'll guess we might find out a bit more over the next few days, but what you've described above is unfortunately just a standard part of modern football, that all clubs have to deal with, its part and parcel of all transfer dealings, particularly with the better, more in demand players.

Does Liquidshokk just turn up on New Years Day?

Haha, made me chuckle :)

Yeah I did attend and it was a truly brilliant night.

As mentioned above though i'm sure no one really feels like rushing on here to post what was said as it will get torn apart and a negative slant put on any news (yeah I know that's rich... )

All I would say is Cortese comes across really well and I have no doubts he's the best person to be in charge.. And my SWF chums, he's often closer than you think ;)

Why do you have doubts he's the best person to be in charge? Who do you think should be in charge?

i think or guessing that nc is keen to protect our future financial position whilst also upping the quality of the team, squad and club. You can do it 3 ways in my eyes, steadily and sensibly but missing out on a few targets....the man city way, buy now as quickly as possible and worry about the credit card bill when it arrives.....or the skate way, buy now, and NEVER pay later. I know which i prefer.

I do hope that we pull off one 'major' signing soon though!!

As sotonianproud mentioned, the main revelation was the ticketless system they will be bringing in ready for next season. Will be useable for tickets, in the shop and in concourse etc.

Staplewood work has started. Bulldozers due very soon.

Cortese promised Saints will NEVER get relegated while he is in charge and has never discussed selling the club with owners. The plan is to only plan further down the line when in prem. Didnt take it to mean they would sell after season in prem though after he was pushed on that comment.

Real focus on development of academy players to get them into first team

Can't remember much else.. Maybe once I've sobered up I'll remember more ;)
