Puncheon back in 1st team

It's good to give anyone a second chance.

I've no idea if he'll behave or not. We'll find out soon.

I have to say, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. When I hit my 30s, I honestly thought "thank f**k my 20s are over". Complete nightmare capable of creating loads of trouble. Chilled out a lot more now, but still remember that no-one is perfect, especially at that age.

I am glad the club are giving him a second chance. Everyone has their bad days, it's how you respond to them that matters. The noise coming from Puncheon is all good. If it works out, it's a win-win. "New" player plus a former source of disruption neutralised.

We have 5 and 11 free, after that it's 37, 38, then 41 and upwards. Based on his position and Nigel's OCDs he'll either get 11 if we're not planning on signing another striker, or 37 if we are.

37 would amuse me, as it's the number Rob Lee got when brought back into the fold for Newcastle after Gullit froze him out and was then sacked.

Nothing on the OS yet, even though Tadanari Lee is already listed at 19.

So Hooper is no.5?

I personally think we will still end up selling puncheon at some point in the near future. Bit cinical perhaps but I think the supposed clear the air talks and reinstating him to first team squad means Cortese has more chance getting the 1 million fee he wants.

That statement is utterly cringeworthy and seems worded to humiliate the boy as much as anything. Puncheon is a petulant c u*t no doubt, but Cortese is no better with press releases like that.

All that said, my only advice to Jason Puncheon is "be any good" come Saturday and especially Tuesday. We need him.

There is no room for sentiment in football. If he is good enough and get it right on the pitch then this will be best for SFC.

hopefully some of the vocal minority will have learnt their lesson from 2004. Had they buried the hatchet with Hoddle, which the overwhelming Saints fans had done, we would not hav e had the debacle of the following three years.

Well as Adkins said the other day, if he plays for us once he can't play for anyone else this season, so I guess the earliest he's likely to go is in the summer.

If Cortese and Adkins are happy for him to get back on the bus/boat (or whatever we are currently travelling in) that's good enough for me.

Let's get behind him as fans ... Remember "to err is human but to forgive is divine"

...and we are divine fans. FACT

dumbfounded, five and a half pages and not one you muppets have pointed out the lack of tie in the OS apology photo. Total lack of respect from the lad. Bet he's wearing jeans an' all.

Having defended the guy very much against the tide I'm amazed so many of you are now willing to forgive him. I wonder how many of you would welcome him back into the fold if we hadn't be trounce don Monday? Respect to the likes of SuperMikey for sticking to his guns.

To be honest I'm sceptical about this and wonder if its just a way getting him in the shop window on Saturday. That said I'll back him at 'wall as I always have and hope the usual suspects will be a little more patient with him should he get a game and make an inevitable mistake or two.

Interesting chat to a Union friend of mine at work tonight, He had a little dig around and it seems Punch has the club by the balls (hense the turn around) Puncheon has been to the PFA with agent and solicitor and it seems if according to the rules any member of the PFA that is not involved in 10% of any fixtures over a 12 month period (exluding any injurys/suspentions) and his employer cannot prove any grounds for disiplinary action He will have the right to cancel his own contract on the grounds of constructive dismissal and leave on a Bosman.

On a slightly less conspiracy theory tack...

I wonder if seeing AOC's performance for Arsenal at the weekend has had anything to do with Puncheon's decision? Maybe he has realised that he actually lost his place in the side to a good player?! Perhaps realising that AOC is no longer here has brought him to realise that he could potentailly stake a claim for the left wing berth.

Funny you should bring something like this up as I was watching SSN earlier and they had an employment lawyer or some such to talk about the Carlos Tevez malarkey at City and he said the exact same thing about City's refusal to consider Tevez, although he implied that the player only has to be considered available for selection by the management for 10% of fixtures, not that he necessarily has to be involved in the game for 10% of games.

So this is a very likely reason for the reconciliation.

It's because he wanted the no.8 shirt but it was already taken if I recall.

It's hardly an excuse - I'm also pleased to know it's against Football League rules, as squad numbers have to be consecutive (as far as is possible). We've kind of wriggled around it by not having a 5, but that's not quite the same as leaving 41-87 empty and having a number 88.

Good player with a sh*t attitude. Don't really want him to pull a Southampton shirt on again but if NC and NA think his head is right and JP thinks he can turn himself around for the benefit of our club then i'll give him the chance.

It is just as good as a new signing, IF... he really is up for it.

Sums up my thoughts entirely. I've always maintained I didn't want to see him play for us again because of his attitude. If he is willing to change that, work hard as a team player and accept whatever position NA decides - even if that's a place on the bench or nothing at all - welcome back JP. I don't like you, I didn't want you here, but I'll support you for as long as you support the team.

Is the attitude stuff a bit of a myth because I thought he always seemed to give 100% and even when getting booed and not playing well still actively wanted the ball.

Worth remembering as well that all our team was rubbish then at the start of last season. The end of the previous season he was playing brilliantly.

When he was playing, sure, you're right. The moment there was a hint of not being a guaranteed first team regular his crap attitude shone through. He isn't (wasn't?) a team player, he was all about himself.

Probably not the case here. He has spent most of the last 12 months out on loan.

I'm glad we did this because:

1. It was the right thing to do. His career would have been destroyed otherwise, and if at all possible a solution should be found in such situations.

2. It increases our options. I'm not convinced that he is one of our best eleven (and he will need to be OK with this) but when looking at the frailty of our options of late then it's great to see him back.

3. As has been mentioned, this may free up some funds for any transfers that may come through in the next few days.

welcome back jason now show us how good you are. actions speak louder than words. but once he starts making mistakes or has a poor performance tho how long will it be before he is booed and slated by the fans again?

It will give Guly a rest from it at least.

obviously been told by his agent to get his rse in gear ready for the summer transfer window, but if that means he'll turn on the style and help get us promoted so be it. hopefully the sms faithful will give him a chance to settle back in and show us why he was brought to st mary's in the first place.
