pingwing Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 "Pay up Pompey, Pompey pay up" made me smile http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16710949.stm Explains it all, by all assumptions the back log of bad ownership and debt they just can't get rid of makes the winding up a real possibility. mitch01 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 Ideal scenario: They survive by the skin of their teeth but get sent back down to the depths of league 1 where they stay for a good few years because they are finally running their club within its means. Back to where they belong, rivalry and our superiority intact.
david in sweden Posted 25 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 25 January, 2012 West Ham would sooner pay Poopeys tax bill than lose 6 points! ...and where would they get the money from ..? only if they boughtup half the Pompey side..
david in sweden Posted 25 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 25 January, 2012 (edited) You will still need an extra team promoted from the Conference to make it back to 92. Unless they only relegate one from the 4th division. seem to think that was a suggested solution on a previous occasion ..? (a reprieve for the 23rd side in L2) and this is only the first such situation - if the L1/L2 clubs have such bad economies...it may well happen again in the future. I think it was much more unjust for teams like Luton (when they were "canned " 30 points) and had no chance of surviving, but Bournemouth did . kpturner Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 Can we have them survive, but also be deducted 10 points, and be relegated, and have all the points that teams got off them this season expunged from the records? Surely possible!
St_Tel49 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 Oh no, I can't use ludicrous or unjust now.....! Can I just leave it there. Irrespective, my own point of view is that I don't particularly like the current rule. I don't have a better one in mind (although I'm fairly certain that somebody much more intelligent than I could formulate one). Also, I would like to add that I really wouldn't actually want this to happen. Unless we went on to win the league by more than 5 points, it would always feel like 'we never really'. I don't think that any amount of sitting and thinking will come up with a fairer rule. Of course it is a p1sser to lose 6 points if have already played them twice but that is just how the cookie crumbles. They could just as easily have lost to them twice. It is a p1sser if a referee awards a penalty against you for what is later shown to be a clear dive but there is nothing you can do about it. C'est la vie. St_Tel49 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 I'd rather get promoted by actually winning games - Can you imagine the nonsense we would have to put with --" you only got promoted because WHU were deducted points - Get promoted by what goes on the pitch not some fantasy land of who's and maybes. No - you would have got promoted by getting more points off the teams that remained in the league than your rivals did. What is unfair or unreasonable or unjust about that? SFC Forever Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 Also, I would like to add that I really wouldn't actually want this to happen. Unless we went on to win the league by more than 5 points, it would always feel like 'we never really'. Why, because we will totally destroy them when we plat at St Mary's. Just two points lost for a draw not five.
SFC Forever Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 If they get a points deduction surely it will be more than 10 points having just suffered administration recently and a points deduction?
Aardvark Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 I'd think the fair thing would be for all Pompey's unplayed fixtures to be forfeited 2-0, but existing results to stand (I'm not sure why I say 2-0...I seem to have some dim distant recollection that this is the standard "default" score). But the rulebook couldn't be clearer, as I understand it, and ALL results would be expunged. I can see why the league would want to keep them afloat. It would look odd to suddenly switch to a 44 game season when you're more than halfway through. And, of course, there are revenue implications (Saints would stand to lose c. £1m if the game at St Mary's is cancelled). Offsetting that, the club's struggling against relegation are surely going to be utterly insistent that there is a mammoth points penalty. Congratulations! Your ridiculous suggestion has actually managed to make Micky's irrational rantings appear less cretinous.
Jimmy_D Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 It's not quite as simple as us just gaining... WHU and Cardiff would also have a game in hand on us if Pompey's results were expunged.

The9 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 If Poopey do go bust before the end of the season, and the top of the table changes because of this, you can be sure that WHU, Cardiff etc will sue the Football League. Even better, because they'll then be thrown out of the Football League too. Long and short is to be part of the league you agree to abide by their rules. The FL wouldn't tolerate a situation where members were challenging their authority or there would be anarchy. The rules, for the past god knows how long, indicate that clubs who fail to fulfil their fixtures have their records expunged. It happened to Aldershot after THIRTY-SIX games in 1992, they resigned on 25th March, and all the points and all their fixtures were eradicated. Nothing protects the integrity of a competition like the competition authorities actually sticking to the rules they are playing by.
The9 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 By the way, the "default score" is 3-0, not 2-0.
The9 Posted 25 January, 2012 Share Posted 25 January, 2012 Yep, I didn't quite think that one through! I guess, whatever happens, it sends a ripple effect down to where an AFC Pompey get introduced into the league. Quite how it gets managed is making my head hurt thinking about it, so I'm going to stop. I wouldn't worry about it, once you get to Conference level, there are teams going under every season and teams failing to meet ground criteria so the numbers are constantly in flux. Most seasons they have to delay the fixture release because they're waiting to see if sides can start in the leagues they're in (eg Chester City).
