Dare to criticise Adkins?

I don't want to spoil what is a very interesting thread BUT...of course the idea is to bring on youngsters, but those lads coming onto the bench are nowhere near the standard we need for CC level strikers - which is what you have listed as our (bid) alternatives. It takes time to cultivate new young players, (I know that Bale and Walcott were exceptions,) but looking back at Channon, Shearer, MLT and Beattie ...all were carefully nursed along after thier initial games and it took more than a year before any of them even got a regular spot - let alone developed into a good striker.

(Aside from his legendary hat-trick - Alan Shearer was very poor for a season and a half after that.. before he finally got some form, and MLTs exploits weren't so special in the early days before he had played 40/50 games.)

We have to buy in a couple of strikers NOW ...(I'm hoping Lee is good enough to be one of them), because no-one in the Youth side seems anywhere near good enough on present showing. Jason Dodd is doing a fantastic job with the youngsters, but the level is little more than Schools football, and not Championship level.

for the record; Sharp and Hooper have scored over 100 League goals each, and Rodrigues (not so productive) has over 30 to his name...not to mention they are older and have played a couple hundred games already !. That's the sort of form we need to buy in before Jan.31st)

David, I think you missed my point mate, the point you've just made is in fact my point!

We have done fantastic this season, but in my humble opinion to make that final push we do need a experienced player, a Billy Sharpe, Hooper sort of player and now!

OK St.Jason

... now I see it, maybe we are on the right bus after all. The real problem seems to be .we have bid for Hooper but Celtic won't let him go..........and we haven't bid for Sharp (who would surely come- if he were only asked !

Adkins is far from invincible from criticism. I dare say he makes some mistakes every game. But the elements of his management / team selection that can be criticised are by far dwarfed by the positive impact he has had.

I think it is fair to say he has to work with a very demanding Chairman and some large expectations. But he has got the club together and the team playing some fantastic football. That shouldn't stop people questioning what he does though - he is not perfect. Just because he does a great job doesn't mean some of his decisions can't be questioned and those that do shouldn't be told to shut-up just because Adkins is doing a great job.

However, I do feel like he has done such a good job that he has more than earned our trust with his judgement. And very few Managers get that treatment from fans.

Name me a manager that hasn't.

Very true, I can't think of any that have been in the job any length of time that have not lost 2 matches in a row at some stage which seems to be the critera by which many judge that a manger has lost his grip. Judge a manager at the end of the season by where you expected to be at the start and where you actually end up.

  • 1 month later...
Both he and the squad rode the wave of optimism and belief that last season brought us,Pardew played his past enormously i don't care what anyone says, now that wave has turned into a mere ripple the real work needs to be done. You can blame suspensions and injuries but all clubs have the scenarios put before them,it is how you address them that matters.

Both on the pitch and off it....

Can he do it on his own merits? can he do it in the transfer market?

He took scunny up,rode the wave then fell short when it counted.......we have money, not sure i trust hin to spend it wisely however.

The usual abuse and bile will be thrown my way as per the norm....but the above needs to be addressed,in fact it should have been scrutinised before.

We have been playing poorly for a considerable time....the teams that were expected to give us a run for our money have faltered and found another gear...have we got another gear on this bus to move up to?

No more happy chappy, crappy soundbites...sort it out Nigel, please.

I'm sure you have the capabilities to take us far,now is the time to show it, in all areas of SFC.

as usual, you talk absolute crap about adkins

Criticism of NA this early into his managerial career for Saints is ridiculous. He has had a great start but the squad has run out of team and picked up injuries. To some extent this was predictable, but not NA's fault.

By August it was obvious we were not going to spend big to build a squad for promotion and I still maintain that this season was all about consolidation.

No, NA has done a great job and unless we are relegated he has my support !

Note my support of NA !

Bore off.

Don't have a problem with dredging up posts from the past if they represented a consensus or even a significant minority position as they merit discussion; but we all know where this bulb is coming from and that he alone holds these views and is irrelevant.

So what's the point?

Thanks for resurrecting that OP, Delldays. As you rightly say, the OP is indeed a cock, but now he is one with egg on his face.

I seem to recall at the time on some similar thread, likening the season to a marathon. Several other sensible people expressed the view that it wasn't worth getting all worked up about when so much of the season remained. Adkins is very sensible now refusing to be drawn when asked whether we will go up automatically. It looks increasingly likely, but it is not a foregone conclusion.

No doubt the forum of West Ham fans has their own equivalent doom-sayers wailing and gnashing their teeth about how they had a God-given right to be running away with the division. Undoubtedly too, the Reading equivalents will have been slashing their wrists earlier in the season and jubilant that they are having a good run in the final straight.

It is all about having some sort of reasonable perspective. Keep calm and carry on.

Probably a separate thread required but Adkins' contract expires at the end of next season; I would like to see a statement of intent and Adkins signed up to a long term deal very soon after this season ends, preferably with a nice hefty release clause for when Liverpool come asking after him.

Yes remember that - great news! However, the only worrying bit is " ..... is staying at St. Mary's until June 2015," seems to imply he is off after that??? What the hell, let's just enjoy the ride, and we will be European Champions by then anyway and can have our pick of any manager :-)

Think you're reading into that WAY too much. I haven't checked them all but Schneiderlin's profile says "until 2014".

I don't see that as setting a leaving date at all!

Why are people so scared of old threads? It's interesting, and usually funny.

If you're worried about someone bringing up something you posted ages ago, in the future, then probably best that you don't post at all.

edit: Just re-read your post properly. My apologies, I missed your whole point. But still, it's funny to laugh at Lard.
