benjii Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 We have strengthened our squad this window and are unlikely to lose any players unless we want to. We were the best over the first half of the season. West Ham play utter dross and scrape through a lot of their games. They will have a bad run because they are not very good. We will probably win comfortably at Upton Park. Middlesbrough are sheeiiiite. Cardiff are ok and sort of proficient but not really great and are heavily dependent on one or two players. Their football is reasonably primitive and simple like West Ham's and is not in the same league as ours. Everyone else is too far behind to catch us barring some sort of inexplicable slump from us. We will win the league by 3-10 points and will be at least 8 points clear of third. No worries.

But I agree that we will win it.

We have already once lost out way this season, we could easily do it again. I do wonder if the Cork-on-the-right tactic is a decent sticking plaster NA has discovered, or it could be made to work mid-term if Chaplow struggles to return quickly to fitness and form I was thinking this afternoon that West Ham seem to have a scoring problem - they needed penalties in this game and against Portsmouth. Boro are going backwards, seems like its down to us, Cardiff and WHU.

CanadaSaint Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 I haven't seen a team in this division that has impressed me, other than us when we were playing really well. If we can get anywhere close to that form again I think the OP will be proven correct. If not, I'm still confident that it'll be playoffs at worst. And when it comes to which team (not which transfer budget) is best-equipped to stay up if they go up, that would be us as well.

Lighthouse Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 I maintain that Middlesboro really aren't that good. They've made a living grinding out narrow 1 goal victories against crap teams in a similar fasion to Brighton last season. The difference being Brighton were much better at it and Boro are very inconsistent. Today and their visit to St Marys aren't the only times they haven't turned up for a match. Not sure I'm as confident as Benji; Wham, Brum and Cardiff all look strong at the moment.
alpine_saint Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 Even if we end up playoffs I won't be moaning, we were struggling in league 1 not long ago. All you can ask for is improvement each season and we're getting that. Some have very short memories, zero patience, a lot of anger and little sight of the fact it's just a sport. Never ceases to amaze me on all the transfer threads how many people think they know better than managers, chairman etc. they simplify everything, point out the obvious and moan constantly. I'm just not sure at what point some people enjoy supporting their club. Because those moaning and panicking now will undoubtedly react the same way if we were top of the premiership! Or even 4th - 'we have to buy or we'll miss out on champions league FFS'. All short termist, all reactionary, impatient, ignorant morons. Personally I think we've been fantastic. By we I mean the team, because many fans on here have been quite frankly pathetic. After the opportunities we've had to take this seasons Championship by the horns and make it ours, I will definitely bloody moan if we end up in the playoffs. Even though we have indeed made stunning progress in the last 2 years, it will definitely feel like a golden chance lost. I think your description of those who might dare to feel like this as "reactionary impatient ignorant morons" is unreasonable, self-opinionated and arrogant. S-Clarke Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 I think we've been excellent this year, whereas teams like WHU and Boro have sneaked alot of their results by scruffy penalty's and scuffed last minute winners etc. We have won more games by controlling them, more than I can remember for years. Our professionalism and attitude once we go 1-0 is something you don't usually associate with saints teams. We just need to keep our heads because the main thing going for us is the fact we're a 'team'. Not just a bunch of players put together this season, the majority of these lads know each other inside out and have been with each other for 3 years now. That counts for alot. We probably could do with a little bit more pace, or another option up front - an alternative as such, as with say Lambo and Connolly out we look desperately short up there. But it's staggering that we're even talking about winning the league as being a possibility and the lads deserve huge respect for getting us there - but it would be bloody disappointing if we didn't do it now - so COYR! hasper57saint Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 My Brummie Supporting neighbour is not convinced that 'Blues' can go up this season. Too much 'off field' activity concerns him and many other supporters. Last weeks win over Millwall looks, on paper, impressive, but he said 'They were sh.. and only had nine men. One of whom played well, the Lino' Todays win over Watford was not very well supported. The Ref rather than an efficient footballing side helped them win. He reckons that when we play them in a couple of weeks time 'Saints will play them off the park' Optimistic I know but keep the faith. We're doing OK and Monday will see us back on top again. James Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 A lot of people worried about Brum which I find strange as they were possibly the worst team to visit SMS this season - just dreadful. They're on a good run at the moment but don't think they'll maintain it. WHU and Cardiff are the main threats but its about being in the top 2 not necessarily winning the league. I think the next two games will tell us a lot about where our season is headed. Two wins and we're well on the way, slip ups and we could be looking at playoffs. Genk Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 Birmingham have lost Chris Wood as his loan ran out and I really don't rate Marlon King as a striker who will consistently score in the run in when you need him to. I am not worried about WHU is all honest, I think us and WHU will break clear of the pack together and they might sneak it, but I will happily take second. Nigel has strengthened well so far and one more addition will be enough for us to keep getting results, especially with players coming back from suspension and injury. Just enjoying this season winning a fair few games...as much as I look forward to the Prem, the consequences of relegation and losing players in a couple of season does worry me. Chez Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 if Brum don't sell or loan Zigic in this window, financially they are crippled. They are massively reliant on potential investment from Hong Kong appearing and of course selling players like Ridgewell. I keep saying it, but Curtis Davis is the best defender in the Championship and buying him would solidify our back four, if it was needed, and totally ruin brum's chances. Should we get promoted he (along with Zaha) would be the first on my list of buys, so why not do it now? As for us winning the league, I can see it. Connelly's return has brought our `possession at all costs' style back and teams just can't cope with not having the ball. Keep him fit and others and we can do it. I honestly believe that. stcappy Posted 21 January, 2012 Share Posted 21 January, 2012 Having watched Cardiff today, it makes you appreciate just how good we were until the end of November - hear and shoulders better than everyone. We hit a blip for almost 6 weeks and takes the Saturday we don't play, until we have been knocked off top spot. If we can get back to just 75% of where we were from sept - nov we will go up comfortably and I would be extremely surprised if it wasn't as champions. I really do think many have underestimated how good we have been. I saw Swansea a few times last year and they weren't as good as we have been so far. We are a very good team - we need to believe that. Last week there were signs we did again thankfully.

SuperMikey Posted 22 January, 2012 Share Posted 22 January, 2012 We will not lose against Leicester. Fact. The most pressing concern for me at the moment is that we're playing West Ham, Cardiff and Burnley in a short space of time. Those are 3 crucial games against promotion rivals (excluding perhaps Burnley, who will be play-offs at best). If we can win 2 of those games, I would put us as a certainty for automatic promotion imo. This is a vital time!

Cestrian Saint Posted 23 January, 2012 Share Posted 23 January, 2012 (edited) Anybody who believes that is living on another planet! In December I posted a thread with a few facts. We've lost to clubs in the bottom 3 away from home and still have the likes of WHU, Boro, Brum & Blackpool etc. to play away. Given our crap away form, how can people honestly think we'll beat those teams? Now we've started losing at home and are showing little sign of signing any real quality. I got a whole host of abusive private messages when I expressed my opinion. I predicted this would happen and I stand by what I said. Saints will not get promoted automatically!
