AndyD Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 30 odd pages and no ink on the paper... Just feeling like saying with SRL, Jose and the two new signings I think we'll go up automatically...The January window is difficult to recruit for numerous reasons. If we go up we can realistically get J Rod who has always been Nigel's 1st choice IMHO...
NickG Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Agree. Much prefer transfer policy of just looking at add real quality rather than another forward we don't really need for the sake of it. After 26 games we are well clear of the other teams in terms of goals scored. We don't need a forward. Get an excellent one in would be great but don't need one urgently for 20 games. I put these stats on Hooper thread - remember only 20 games left: We clearly did have a chance of getting him. Despite some on here might think they know more than about whether this was a non-starter than Adkins - there would have been numerous conversations involving those involved in the game which would have given Saints the idea that it was worth trying. We have scored 50 league goals, West Ham 41, Cardiff 41, Middlesborough 30. We have had injuries suspensions to Lambert, Guly, Connolly, Barnard, Chaplow and De Ridder. Lambert 17 goals, Guly 11, Connolly 6, De Ridder 4, Chaplow 4. We have added Yago Falque for more attacking flair. We have added Tandari Lee who scored 15 goals last season in Japan and the winning goal in the Asia Cup. I don't think Adkins thinks we need another forward, and will just take anyone. The team in coming weeks Lallana / Falque on the wings, with Lambert and Guly up front. 5 on the bench from - Bart, Martin, Cork, Connolly, De Ridder, Holmes, Butterfield, Doble, Barnard, Chaplow and Tandari Lee. I don't think Adkins will be desperately seeking a last panic deal to get a forward in - unless he believes he is real quality and good for the long term and worth jumping ahead of the others - e.g. Hooper. the saint in winchester Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 J Rod was first choice pre-season but 'Gary flaming Hooper' is clearly first choice this month. However, I agree with your summary that he is not key to our plans - we never had him. Personally I wouldn't want anyone who doesn't want to be with us, and I'd sooner not spend more than £3M on another striker. If that rules out J Rod and Gary flaming Hooper, so be it. Plenty more fish in the sea. And I'm sure there's one who would jump at the chance to join the side top of the Championship, with a solvent and stable finance structure. We are a great catch, regardless of what GfH and Neil F Lennon might think.
AndyD Posted 20 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Agreed Nick G - If we go up the Summer will be very exciting as we can finally offer Premiership wages and then that's when we'll get Big Names heading down the M27 ;-) Ala J Rod, Sordell, maybe even Hooper if Rangers win the league again. SuperMikey Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 I'd much prefer to have Hooper than Rodriguez though, Hooper is a different type of player. He's a finisher, and with the amount of chances our midfield lays on he would thrive in this team. Rodriguez is much more of a target man. Tadanari Lee is a pretty big fella as well, so he can operate in a similar type of role to SRL, dropping deeper and linking with the midfield. I agree that it's a bit of a circus, but what would you expect when we've taken so many people by surprise with our season so far and the fact that we have money in the bank to spend? I think it's a sign of the times, and i'm happy to see it. 3 years ago I would never have guessed we'd be bidding circa £6m for a player - 3 years ago I was wondering whether we'd still have a club to support or not... RobM Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 30odd pages and now, thanks to you, another thread to read about this subject. Perhaps there isn't any more to life than Gary Flaming Hooper (how did he get that nickname?).

Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Still think he is top quality though and with any injuries to our front man, i.e Rickie or Connolly (who is injury prone) or Guly, we will be short of options up front. I know we have scored the most goals in the division but improving our front line which is what Hooper would have done isn't surely a bad thing? Plus, despite the Lee work permit thing going through last week, he still hasn't signed on the dotted line and will not be eligible for selection in matches. Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Maynard would be a great addition. Would be bring pace and goals with a predatory instinct. He is also on his way out with Bristol City keen to sell and they can't hold out for big money because he has just 5 months left on his contract. Would cost probably half of the reported Hooper offer was. And Billy Sharp is available of course for around £2-3M, a bargain for a proven scorer at this level. Just a few thoughts....... Saint Charlie Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Maynard doesnt actually have that much pace....its a bit of a stereotype.
Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 For a frontman he does, and no it's not stereotyping. If thats what came into your head when I said that then it you who has that sort of problem. Anyway would be good regardless of his 'stereotypical' lack of pace. ART Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Just been announced that Kevin Davies has been cast aside. I'd hate him to end up at West Ham whilst we wait on further transfer news. It still believe he'd do a great job up front with Ricky and act as a foil that would drag the opponents defence apart whilst allowing Ricky and others to get in and score. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2089526/Kevin-Davies-alerts-West-Ham-Bolton-admission.html

buctootim Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 There is something odd about a few weeks and 30 pages spent discussing a young man's next career move. Theres something odd about spending saturday afternoons watch 22 men get sweaty together chasing a piece of a cows arse around.

I also don't care if West Ham sign him, they can only play at most 2 of their big immobile target men strikers at any one time and they've already got Carew and the slightly more mobile Cole... so that just means they wouldn't be picking the half decent Baldock, or Sears, etc.

I think Maynard will go on the last day of the transfer window. He's just holding out for the most money. City are resigned to losing him, so the fee won't be that much, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't go to a lower Prem club. Only thing is, apart from QPR I don't think that many have much money.
