beavis17 Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 (edited) Seemed to hint that another striker wouldn't be signed if they can't get Hooper although he may be taking a leaf out of Pardew's book regarding Cisse... Asked whether he could sign Hooper he said, "I wouldn't have thought so." Edited 20 January, 2012 by beavis17

S-Clarke Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 I hope we haven't put all our eggs into one basket re: Hooper, like we did in the summer with Rodriquez. It would be frustrating to say the least. It's like tempting you with a big signing...then taking it away again!

They have to be the right players and the right quality. Its not the clubs fault if clubs wont sell

SuperMikey Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 Just putting it out there: With Lee signed do we actually need a striker? This discussion is on another thread, Lee might take a bit of time to bed in properly and we have other issues with our strikers: Lambert - Consistent, first-choice striker (even if he is suspended at the moment!) Guly - Class act Connolly - Great player, but injury problems Barnard - Good player, but uncertain future and injury problems too Forte - Looks to be on his way out De Ridder - Really a winger. If we get promoted this season, I can see us getting rid of Barnard and Forte, and Connolly won't always be available. Ideally, we need 4 top strikers in our team. I do tend to agree but it has to be someone top class. The likes of Maynard might not actually get in the squad! Obviously Hooper would have but that seems dead. Its easy to want more players but the fact we are top and top goalscorers suggests we are doing pretty damn well in that area.

I think if we don't sign another striker in this window and we go up we'll probably go for Maynard on a free first of all, just for that bit of pace up front. Problem is we need somebody ideally who has a history of scoring at Prem level. Our real priority should we go up would be to get a goalscoring midfielder for that 4th CM position. Cork, Schneiderlin and Hammond are great players but none of them will score most games. Somebody like Peter Whittingham is ideal.

If we need one more anywhere for cover it is a centre back IMO. If we get another striker we should look to sell/loan out Barnard.
Saint-Armstrong Posted 20 January, 2012 Share Posted 20 January, 2012 We bid for Sordell then too, and countless others I'm sure. Why do so many use the lack of information to find negatives? Because it suits their needs.
pap Posted 20 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 20 January, 2012 I watched the show. Nige came across as very knowledgable, seemed to know a lot about the players they focused on. Not really sure what to take from it regarding transfers, but then he is hardly likely to generate speculation in that capacity and he did re-state the aim of winning the division. They also talked about the potential impact of West Ham going top after their clash with Forest tomorrow. NA seemed pretty relaxed about being pushed out of the top spot. Predictably, Nige thought that our recent rough spell was a good learning experience and a kick up the backside for the team. Would have to agree with this on recent evidence. Was a good watch - a lot of Saints talk. Also a bit with Jordan Rhodes, but nothing discussed transfer-wise.
