Ashley Grute Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 and we could sign any from the following, who would you go for? I know we are not interested in Sharp or Maynard apparently, but I am just interested in who everyone thinks is best! Would you choose: Sharp Rodriguez Maynard Hooper Sordell Rhodes Beckford Personally I would go for Sordell- just think his pace is something we really lack. batterseasaint Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Tough one. If I close my eyes and try to imagine how I would feel on hearing us signing any of those, it would appear that I'm most excited about Hooper, closely followed by Rhodes. I think the Rhodes thing is because he is the next big thing at the moment, with bigger clubs mentioned in the same sentence as him, so i like the idea of us making some waves in the transfer market. Plus, I think we need to think seriously about a young pretender to Rickie (someone who can come deep and make the play as well as get on the end of sequences) and it would appear Rhodes would fit the bill. Having said that, Rhodes would be guaranteed a starting spot in a handful of Prem teams but he wouldn't be with us, so i don't think he is a serious option for us. I don't know enough about any of the others so i can't really comment. A bit of pace would be nice though, so maybe Sordell would be a good option. Dalek2003 Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 None. I'd save the money and get someone better or for a vaguely sensible price in the summer. We've reinforced already, Lambert and Chaplow back soon, we'll go up regardless, trust me. Hmm, you are not very ambitious then because you would be far less likely to get promoted. shurlock Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Cant see Rhodes, Hooper, JRod leaving in this window. Think Maynard and Sordell could and possibly though less likely Sharp and Beckford.
SuperSAINT Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Good question. I'm really torn on the subject. Depends what you want from your striker I guess. I'm ruling Sharp/Maynard out. Rodriguez - Surprised we've not been linked this window TBH. Pretty sure he was target no.1 last time round. Class player. Perhaps has the best long-term potential. Similar to Lambert though? Hooper - I like him. Scored goals at this level, and scores for fun up north (not hard though) - But 6+ million is a hell of a lot of money... Sordell - Young, and pacey. I probably have seen him the least. But his attributes fit the bill for what I think we lack. Rhodes - Everyone wants him. I still think 4-5 million is a lot to spend on a league 1 striker. Beckford - Pacey, scores goals, but not sure his attitude combined with his wages are worth it as a package. I'll go with Hooper (just pipping J-Rod, but I'd be happy with any of them) - Can never have too much fire-power.
Dalek2003 Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 I've said I think we will anyway, so clearly I'm more ambitious by wanting the funds spent on players to start the top flight. I'm also excited about seeing Iago playing for Saints, and hopeful Lee will prove decent. I also still think Barnard is a good striker, and that Lambert, Guly and Connolly are excellent options. Can't play them all, so I don't see how signing a new one guarantees success. Same way some people seem to think signing two 25 goal a season strikers will get you 50 goals, yet obviously chances can't fall to both of them, they can't both take the penalties etc., so they get shared round more. If we're not creating chances, it won't matter who is up front. If all 5 strikers are off form, we're in big trouble anyway. But we are stuttering. Then again, if you think we turned the corner against Forest I can see where yo are coming from. I think our December form is more typical of our current position. Badger Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Hooper for me - good scoring record at this level, NA knows him and will continue to improve him. That is enough for me. Rodriguez - disappointed this did not happen in September. Not seen or heard enough about him since, not the prolific scorer we seem to want Sharp - a 'lesser' version of Hooper perhaps Maynard - no given up on this one, would prefer Adomah if we are buying from Bristol City Sordell - possibly the pace we need. Rhodes - HTFC unlikely to sell anyway Beckford - no thanks.

Cestrian Saint Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Not one of them. Hooper - Too much money. Sharp / Maynard / Rodriguez / Sordell can all do a job at this level but would they be able to hack it in the Premiership if we go up? Rhodes - On fire but will it last and can he do it at this level? Beckford - ****e attitude.

Reynoldson!! Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 I would take Rhodes any day of the week. And twice on Sundays. He's scored more than double any other player in League 1 - that's astonishing. Failing that I would love Sordell, he's got a spark about him that I think we could really do with. The others are all equal last, except Beckford who is slightly below last.
Reynoldson!! Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 Actually, Hooper can be equal second with Sordell, purely based on hearsay as I've never seen him play
St Marco Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 Hooper because it would send a huge message to clubs like Celtic. Signing a striker from league one wouldn't send the "we are ready for the big time" message I think we need to send. Hooper would take the club to the next level. diggers Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 Rhodes for me too. Without wishing to turn into a typical forum whinger, the OP's question stated "if you were Nige", my fear is that I'm pretty sure that if Nige had his way sharpe would be on board weeks ago but the question should really be "if you were Nichola"? - personally I think the best teams simply give their managers a budget and let them trade as they see fit within it. I personally don't think that's our chairmans style. Hopefully this won't end up being a bad thing, but I hope it doesn't eventually cause friction with a manager who I consider to be the clubs best signing in years. Cestrian Saint Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 At no point did I say that we should sign someone cheap with Prem experience. I simply gave my views on why we shouldn't sign the players listed. For what it's worth I'm not the only one who said that we shouldn't sign any of the players listed. Window Cleaner Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 The one that would grab the biggest headlines.....i.e. Hooper Personally I'm getting pretty fed up with all the speculation and zero action. Hopefully Lee will be available soon enough cos Hooper,Maynard,JRod,Sharp et al just seem like the biannual dose of hot air to me,and as I guess there's no chance of us signing Beckford...well I'll be pleased when we get to 1st Feb, hopefully with another 4 points at least on the board and we can get on with getting the best out of players that we already have. forever a red and white Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 Personally Sordell. He doesn't appear to be commanding a massive transfer fee and is in with the England U21s. He looks atrong quick and a good eye for goal. I think we need to capitlise on our position and strengthen our players. However, I don't want us to spend silly money. We've done fine so far this season and we do need one or two bodies but lets be a bit careful with money. Look at Leicester, spent £14m and have had a crap season. Beckford hasn't really proved himself in this division as far as IO am concerend. Rhodes would for me, probably be too expensive judging by the fact Prem teams appear to be interested. Rodriguez same and Maynard injury prone it also appears.
South City Si Posted 19 January, 2012 Share Posted 19 January, 2012 Sordell for me. Pace is what we lack and an exciting player to watch in an otherwise dross team. Rhodes would be nice but would very quickly have to make a big big step by potentially playing in the Prem in 6 months, also would cost a fortune, HT dont need to sell.
