Crazy Diamond Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 I've had three landline phone calls today in the space of about 20 minutes to half an hour, in which I pick up and there's a slow continuous beeping. I've tried 1471 and the number is always withheld. The first time it happened I thought it was just some telemarketing company or something so I thought no more about it, but it's happened twice more now and I'm getting a bit paranoid. The third time, I let it beep a few times before pressing a number, it immediately decided to hang up. In addition to that, as soon as I put the phone down it rang again, but this time a woman answered and said "Oh hello is... Um, er, oh... Scaz (?) there?". I said no, to which she replied "Oh I must have the wrong number". I said no problem, she said bye and hung up. I did 1471, no number given, weird but not unheard of for what sounded like a local landline number. I also called someone between the second and third calls and when I did 1471 to double check, I was told I'd been called a minute ago - but I was on the phone at the time. So have they called four times or is something wrong there? As I say, I'm getting a bit paranoid, the wrong number could be completely innocent of course but I've seen 'Defence of the Realm' too many times and worry I'm being bugged or something. Anyone got any suggestions or ideas?

Whitey Grandad Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Some telesales companies have a system which dials several numbers at once and the caller picks up the first one to answer. These can be very annoying. It may not be this but if your problem continues I would call the BT operator and complain.
Weston Saint Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 Are you sure the sound is not a fax machine. If someone has set the fax to redial if not sent it will continue to dial. The lady on the phone may have heard you as the fax tried to send and that might account for her confusion and realising it was the wrong number. Suspect, if I am right that will be the end of the calls.

latter day saint Posted 18 January, 2012 Share Posted 18 January, 2012 we had the same thing last week over a few days, always in the afternoon. did 1471 & tried calling the number but nothing happened? Googled the number & it turned out to be from the General Hospital. we were waiting for a call to schedule a routine scan for my son & it was the Dept involved trying to contact us. apparently its something to do with the switchboard not being able to connect properly with lines that have call barring or something ?? got it sorted in the end but was doing my head in ! Crazy Diamond Posted 24 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 24 January, 2012 It's happened again today! This time there was a number given - 01189 733498 - but when I called a woman answered and quite sarcastically told me it was a fax machine calling me and she hadn't seen anyone using the phone. *****. Again it rang about three different times.

Crazy Diamond Posted 22 February, 2012 Author Share Posted 22 February, 2012 New problem. I've had phone calls yesterday and this morning in which I'm told I have one new message, it won't cost me to listen to it (gee thanks), press 2 to listen, press 9 to delete. Anyone else had this? It's voice activated and I've read if you delete the message your line is opened up and you get charged by the minute. Apparently you can report the number to BT and they'll block them, but whenever I do 1471 I don't get a number to report.

ART Posted 22 February, 2012 Share Posted 22 February, 2012 These types of calls can leave one paranoid. Been having similar problems the past 3 weeks only to find it was the employment office automated phone telling me I've not signed on for the past 6 months. ( Since I retired) French google gives this reply for your number as there is a similar one here in France that's driving English people living here round the twist. Here's what it is. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8493/~/bt-1471
tony13579 Posted 22 February, 2012 Share Posted 22 February, 2012 You haven't got an answer phone service from your phone company? It might be beeping to say you have a message?
Crazy Diamond Posted 23 February, 2012 Author Share Posted 23 February, 2012 Okay I'm confused. I know that we have 1571 here, and as far as I know, we never get a phone call to say we have a message. We have to pick up the phone, listen to the dial tone. If it's normal and continuous, no message. If it's the dial tone but in an on/off kind of way, we have a message and then have to dial 1571 to listen to the messages. It does not involve being called, waiting for me or whoever answers the phone to say something to activate the machine at the other end, who says 'Hello. This is a messaging service. You have one new message. Press 2 to listen to the message, which you will not be charged for, or press 9 to delete it'. If I do neither, it just dies. I've checked it out and it's been reported by people who have actually found out the numbers and reported them, whereas whoever calls me is withholding their number. Apparently it's a 'Press 9' scam, which leaves the line open and can charge you for it. I've also noticed when I've put the phone down, then picked it up again to check, the line is still open, until I put the phone down again for a few seconds to check again. Weird. If it happens tomorrow morning, which will be a third consecutive time, I'll call BT.
