Jordan Rhodes

Wednesday 18th January and two tabloids are reporting Southampton to bid between £3.5m and £4m for Jordan Rhodes...

Also today, the Daily Mail believes Saints will make a final £6.5m offer for Gary Hooper and improve his current £14k p/w at Celtic to £25k p/w.

If true it "seems" like Rhodes might be the back up if Celtic refuse the bid for Hooper. Nice to see Saints look to be shopping from a very high quality shopping list! :D

Okay my last message was an attempt on humour, what I dont understand is this.

Why would Saints tell anyone else what we are bidding etc? It's never been our style so why now?

The Hooper thing comes across as attempt to get him a better contract at Celtic as it looks like his agent is spreading gossip about a bid from us.

I personally think we will bring in someone else not mentioned anywhere.

I would be very surprised if we bid the sort of money needed to prize either Hooper or Rhodes away. I think this is highly unlikely, both Celtic & Huddersfield would be very reluctant to sell. I would guess the same sort of figure would be needed for Rhodes and Hooper (at this stage of the 'inflated Market' season)...£7m? If people think we will spend £7m on one player in the Championship they are sadly deluded.

Net or gross?

Chamberlain subtract Hooper = a few pennies still in the bank.

I suspect that Cortese will be looking at the overall balance sheet rather than each purchase and sale in isolation.

The fact that we have been reported by the national press as being interested in both these guys, plus the absolute silence on erstwhile supposed targets like Sharpe, Maynard, Rodriguez etc leads me to give it some credibility..

Either would be a major coup and asset to us.

I don't think we'll sign either. Both are too vital to their clubs' season, therefore their clubs would only accept really over the top offers which according to most on here we'll never do. Think they'll be a lot of disappointed people at the end of the transfer window if these rumours are taken too seriously.

Won't get either IMO as neither club will sell. Let's concentrate on more realistic targets.

Not sure who you might think is more realistic?

Clearly, NA and NC are going for promotion and to build us the capability to stay in the PL when we get there..

These targets are an eye for both I suspect, hence the big sums reported as offered.

The "leaks" are from elsewhere, and like you I suspect there may be some use of our interest to lever a better contract. There is probably more than one game of brinkmanship going on here, as well as our interest.

mmmmmm, would be great but everytime these things go public it never seems to be good news. I'm surprised a Prem club isn't looking at either of these two (QPR, Fulham etc)

My guess, sadly, is neither of these will get done

That's more to do with some fans reading a newspaper rumour and then taking it as gospel it's going to happen then when it doesn't....they get all angry.

Hudders want to get to the championship they're hardly struggling for money... so by my reckoning they won't part with their star player... unless there is stupid money involved (same situation with hooper at Celtic)

Look at this way we're in with a chance of promotion to the PL how much money would it take for another club to to take Lambert off us..... Huddersfield and Celtic feel the same way.

The only club looking to off load a star striker is Bristol City in attempt to get some money before he leaves in the summer.

if we had either player we would expect upwards of 6 or 7 million for selling so people need to get realistic. IF we really do want to become a top 10 prem team over the coming seasons we will need to make some purchases of this level. Im not advocating we start making 10 to 15 million pound signings left right and centre but we will never stay in the prem by signing 2 and 3 mill players. Thats what was a big part of the failing last time. It has tn be sensible but realistic. By potentially spending 6mill plus on hooper or rhodes now we will almost certainly get far better value in the long term as opposed to buying in the summer.

Don't get it. Why have we suddenly started doing our business in public when we haven't done that at all since NC has been here?

Either it's us putting it out there that we're after a big player and don't mind spending big money, why would we do that?

Or it's kite-flying by agents and other clubs saying 'I'm available', 'Come and buy me', 'Let's start an auction'; I can't see that's really the way for other clubs/agents/players to go if they want to impress NC. cf The way he bombed Ward(?) out from Cov at the last minute.

For these reasons I'm not sure we'll now get either of these, much as either (both!) would be welcome.

Much more likely to get somebody under the radar who hasn't been linked at all, or possibly Maynard or Sordell still (if they keep their traps shut!)?

I thought NCs plan was to build a top 10 PL side with homegrown talent not spend loads of dosh on bringing players in.....

The leaks are coming from the players agent and the selling club f'sure. Either that's in an attempt to bump up his current wages, or an attempt by Celtic to start a bidding war.

When we get higher up and start bidding for higher profile players it's inevitable that there will be leaks.

Interesting comment on there...

Bye bye Hooper. We all know he doesn't fit in at Celtic. Look how uncomfortable he was in November in the Press Conference when asked about the UEFA probe into the Celtic songsheet. He couldn't bring himself to defend the self-titled TGFITW (self praise is no praise) and looked like he was running off to be sick just thinking about their 'hymns'.

He also wants to play for GREAT BRITAIN in the Olympics - that won't go down well at C.P.

Either would be a marquee signing fo sho.

2 club record bids would mean we'd be bidding in excess of £4 million for Rhodes too. Interesting.

As we know and clearly so do NA and NC, we have a squad good enough to hold its own in the Prem without major surgery except in the striking department.

We have decent defenders ( with a couple of back up additions), great midfield, good wide options but need someone to play with RL as DC probably in his last season for us. One or both of these will set us up superbly, hence the big money talk.

Just a myth I think because in League 1 there is little interest from the press but now we are top of the Championship things are different

I don't believe any of it.

Reality will be more like the top scorer in the Mongolian Yak league, 19 goals so far this season, apparently a bit of a nomad and prone to injury especially shortness of breath.

What Bayasgalangiin Garidmagnai?

Wow the guy is a legend, 31 goals in 17 games already, sign him up I say.

He is called 'Galas' for short.

As much as i would like to believe all this, i have the feeling of deja vu,in the last transfer window we apparently also made several mega million pound bids, all of which came to the square roo of FA.
