Saintandy666 Posted 17 January, 2012 Share Posted 17 January, 2012 http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/johann-hari/the-dark-side-of-dubai-1664368.html I know it is quite an old piece(2 and a half years), but it is very interesting! I'm sure our expat friends may wish to counter some of the stuff in here because Dubai isn't sounding that nice to me at the moment.
Saint_Pedro Posted 17 January, 2012 Share Posted 17 January, 2012 But its "written" by Johann Hari. Why should anyone believe any of the article........
norwaysaint Posted 17 January, 2012 Share Posted 17 January, 2012 Even without that kind of stuff (I sort of understand the ideas of it being dangerous to try to make your home in a country where you have no idea how the culture works), I've never understood the appeal of Dubai. It seems to be for people who love big cities and hate beautiful nature. Despite only being a teacher, I have a very high standard of living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. A big city-state like Dubai is my idea of hell.
Sheaf Saint Posted 17 January, 2012 Share Posted 17 January, 2012 But its "written" by Johann Hari. Why should anyone believe any of the article........ Why should you discredit the entire thing just because it is written by Johann Hari? OK, it's fair to say that recent events have tarnished his reputation somewhat, but I remember reading this when it was published and it appears to be a very well-researched article. I happen to know a lot of what he says (in this piece) is true because my brother lived and worked in Dubai when this was written, and he was extremely lucky to be able to get out of the country when he was made redundant.
