I am going to Holland with a group on 31st March for 5 days, and one of the parties passport expires on May 8th 2012, will he need to get a new passport to travel?

Thanks in advance.

Isn't it a requirement that there is at least 6 months to go on the passport before expiry?

Having said that, my daughter managed to get to France with a passport that had expired 6 months beforehand! That was on Eurostar (not so sure airports would be quite so accommodating) and she took a couple of utility bills and her driving licence to prove her identity.

Entry Requirements - Passport validity

You must hold a valid passport to enter Netherlands. For stays of up to three months your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay; you do not need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this. However, it is always sensible to have a short period of extra validity on your passport in case of any unforeseen delays to your departure.

I've got a feeling that varies depending on the country one is visiting. I'd be surprised if EU countries have such a long expiry overlap period.

I've got a feeling I read once that, technically, you don't need a passport at all in order to leave a country and that the only actual legal stipulation (within the EU at least) is that you need to provide "photographic ID" when entering another country. Of course, the most convenient and hassle free form of photo ID when travelling is ye olde passport but I'm sure it's not explicity a legal requirement to travel with one. That said, try telling that to the border guard when quizzed about it!

There again, I probably heard it on QI so pinch of salt territory no doubt

You do not have to wait until your old passport expires to apply to renew it. Any time left on your old passport when you apply will be added to your new passport, up to a maximum of nine months. For passport applications in the UK, you should apply to the Identity and Passport Service. For stays of longer than three months, contact the Embassy of the country to which you are travelling.

Thanks buctootim :)

Delete this boring thread now mods.

Not for most European countries...US and Canada do require it.
