Is It Illegal To Kill My Own Cat

He's 15 had a great life, but everything has started to pack up. I can take him to the vets and for 50 quid he can be put to sleep.

Can I save myself 50 quid and do it myself?

I assumed not, but having a play on the net seems like I could do. Obviously won't tell the kids, but from what I thought was a complete no no, what I have read it is within the law.

And for the animal lovers out there, he wont feel a thing.

There was a debate about this on Jeremy Vine's radio 2 show recently because a man was convicted for killing his own dog, although in his case it was because he had caused the dog unnecessary suffering by slitting its throat and leaving it to die slowly. A few experts called in and advised that as long as you do it quickly and without undue suffering then there is nothing legally stopping you from euthanising your own pet.

Sorry but you horrible bastard, no doubt that feline has given you years of affection and YOU chose to have it!!! It didn't damn well choose you. Do the decent thing and take it to the vet asap, you are being extremely cruel already by not having taken it already if it's organs are failing. I took may 18 year old moggy to be put down on xmas eve 2010, worst thing ever but at least I knew I had done the right thing and the last thing he saw was my face not me with a big bastard spade!!!

Cats are pretty quick, unless it's seriously unwell I suspect the chances of a clean hit with a spade are slim, and an initial glancing blow is likely to cause suffering.

Throw it into one of those tree shredders. Following the recent strong winds there are loads around at the roadside or nearby. A quick ten quid into the hand of the operator and you have the most humane method you can ask for.

Jesus some people don't deserve animals do they SIP. :(

What a stupid response. I have 3 dogs and a cat (I did have 3 dogs, 2 cats and a goldfish (I flushed the goldfish down the toilet when ward equilised..... seemed the right thing to do at the time) So i think I am an animal lover.

Now the cat is goin to die, why does it matter how, as long as he doesnt suffer?????

My mate had a similar problem when his cat got really ill on a Sunday night and he thought all the vets would be shut.

He ended up strangling it and from what he said it took ages and was horrific. IF I was you I would stump up the cash and get it done properly because whatever yo have planned might go wrong.

No I don't think it illegal to put down your pet yourself. Maybe best to find someone else to do it for you though.

If you want a painless, and I mean truly painless way of euthanasing, can I point you in the direction of carbon dioxide. When people/animals inhale it, it fills the lungs, renders you unconscious pretty damn quickly (not that you know about it) and that's it. Somewhat more peaceful than shooting your own cat.

The vets way takes 16 - 22 seconds, I can do it quicker than that.

That doesn't make much sense. They put down cats by overdosing them on anaesthetic, so they literally fall asleep and then die with no pain or suffering at all. How is the amount of time relevant? I don't know if it's illegal and it's not morally wrong, but I'd hate to take the chance of ****ing it up if I cared about the animal.

Exactly, as long as it doesn't suffer! Can you guarantee it won't? Better to go to the vet.

Most insects don't have nociceptors I believe(don't know whether flies do or not). Plus, a cat is different to insects, especially one that you have a lot of emotional investment in. You owe it a peaceful painless death.

He isn't being serious Andy. Nor is anyone replying. Are you really this gullible?
