St_Tel49 Posted 15 January, 2012 Share Posted 15 January, 2012 After seeing the highlights on the Football League Show you can see why Adkins wants to strengthen and why he said they should have scored more against the 10-men. No team will ever score from every opportunity and Guly and Cork not converting their chances was understandable, but Holmes and Martin should both have scored. Holmes showed lack of instinct when he stopped the ball when he was clear through, which allowed the defenders to block his way to goal. As for Martin, even a defender should not miss an open goal from that close. Given the red card that could easily have been a yellow and the yellow card that could easily have been a red, there was more luck about this game than a comfortable 3-0 scoreline would suggest. Against a team in the bottom 3, we could have been a goal or two down in the first half hour and it could have been us with 10-men against 11. So, it was a good game to win and if it improves player confidence so much the better but it didn't leave you confident that the poor run is over. On the other hand, one or two new players in the side could make the difference as well as Lambert, Fonte and Chaplow still to return.[/Quote] Good post which puts things in perspective. Too early to say that we are out of the woods and we need to actually get some players in rather than just talking about it. Lee is a good start, but hope it is not the end as well. You two deserve each other
OfnPanad Posted 15 January, 2012 Share Posted 15 January, 2012 Great result - it was a privilege to be there and see such great play 2nd half. Thank god Cork, Hammond & Schneiderlin have been told to stop ****ing about and bloody shoot! On a personal note - since I started attending matches in 1991 this is a landmark being the first away win I've ever seen with my Dad! He has a season ticket and goes to plenty of aways in the South. I live in Barnsley now so I see a fair few northern aways - we both see our share of wins individually however, over the years we have been such a jinx when we go together! We were trying to work out how many losses we'd seen - some highlights were the 3-0 defeat against Sheff Utd with Paul "chocolate wrists" Smith in goal, 5-0 defeat to Sheffield Weds at Hillsborough where Kelvin gave the fans a 2-finger salute for singing it was like watching Brazil, the 3-1 loss in the cup to Rotherham at the hockey stadium...sigh! The best one was Oldham away last season. I said I wasn't going so he didn't bother getting himself a ticket. On the day of the match I was on call and got called out to work in Manchester, just finishing in time to go. So I did and paid on the gate. I got to enjoy that incredible 6-0. He couldn't decide if he was happy or ****ed off each time I called him to say another goal had rolled in!! Blip over hopefully. I will be down in Southampton on Monday week so it'll be good to hopefully see what Lee has to offer against Leicester!

SaintBobby Posted 16 January, 2012 Share Posted 16 January, 2012 You two deserve each other They are both mad at a guess...or more likely enjoy a perverse wind-up. The "we're not out of the woods yet" is a particular gem. Let's spend £10m on new players to make sure we end up 17th...:-) My own impression was that we utterly walked the game (I watched it on the stream, but wasn't actually there in person). Yes, some things went our way...and you could just about re-imagine the game as a massively flukey 1-0 win to Forest.....but you'd need an imagination that dwarves Tolkein, Asimov and Arthur C Clarke combined. In modern, professional, English football, you will very rarely bear witness to a more comprehensive and deserved away win as we saw on Saturday. If you're not ecstatic with the performance and result - or at least completely and unquestionably satisfied - you probably need a level of therapy and support that this website is incapable of providing.... Nutshell! Can't believe Saints haven't had more credit for how well we played. The first 20 minutes were pretty level but from the first goal it was pretty much game over. Of course Forest were poor and the 10 man thing killed it for them but it was great to see Saints have the confidence to keep the ball in all areas of the pitch, with some awesome passages of play. One sequence in the second half in front of the dug outs was shades of the Leeds/Saints humiliation clip from the 70's as we made about 15 passes in a 10m grid, then sprung out to the opposite side of the pitch to start yet another attack. Fantastic stuff. Forest fan on 606 on the way back '........ Southampton were an average team ......' , Forest fan on one of their message boards 'we should be doing better .... man-for-man .... blah, blah .... it's not as if Southampton had any players who would get in our team ....' Clueless, just like their manager. Anybody that was there on Saturday was privileged to watch real quality, if we can roll that forward into the Leic and Cardiff games then we should be seeing a couple of crackers at SMS. Goes a long way to explain our recent success. Too many managers look only at the individuals they have, think the only way to improve the squad is to spend money, and have no ability to coach the best out of a TEAM. A team should always be greater than the sum of its parts. Otherwise, what's the point in a manager? May as well invest in scouting instead... Should keep Wenger away for now. For a comparison , just take Swansea. No stars as such but playing as a really good team.

CylonKing Posted 16 January, 2012 Share Posted 16 January, 2012 Easily the best I have seen Saints play! Had an absolute ball and thought we thoroughly deserved the points. We looked so assured in possesion and controlled the game completely. Forest were extremely poor and I have no doubt that they will be going down. Do not think I have seen such a poor side in all my years watching football. They never looked liked scoring, even when they actually got into a goal scoring position. MOM for me was Hammond. Excellent link up and defensive play, however Jos, as everyone has said, was also brilliant. Apologies to everyone near us on Row Y and our screaming, shrill 7 year old niece. Never before has 'Yellows' been shouted so loudly and at such a high pitch. Ears must've been bleeding all around us, though she did illicit a number of smiles. Not bad for her first ever game and she lasted the full 90 minutes without claiming once that she was bored.

Absolute legend, she stood and sang everything for the full 90; she could show some of our travelling support how to do it;). If it was you, you were stood right behind me, we were the the noisy beggars in front of you.
Professor Posted 16 January, 2012 Share Posted 16 January, 2012 A 3-0 win against a bottom 3 team playing with 10 men for half the game hasn't clouded Nigel Adkins' judgement. He's still quoted as saying he wants another striker in, as well as Lee, and he is still linked with other moves to strengthen. Anyone who thinks the team can't be improved is not in line with the thinking in the club. Its unfortunate that some of the players we have come to like and respect will not hold a regular place in a strengthened team but Cortese has a stated aim that SFC should be a force in the The Prem, not a mid-table side or a yo-yo club. The first step has to be to make certain we get there and with some players at least who are capable of performing at the higher level. The manager has to be careful not to undermine his present squad when he states the club's aims and ambitions, but he will know that the team has to do better over the next few weeks than it was doing over the last few. Two away wins can be taken as evidence that all is OK but I suspect that Adkins, whilst pleased with the results and knowing some of the squad are coming back from injury etc., will not be complacent about the players available to him when he talks to the Chairman. Stair 14 if I remember correctly. She was stood on her seat for most of the game, except for the last 10 minutes of the 1st half where she curled up on her seat for a quick nap. I guess you're too young to remember Gerd Muller, an absolute waste of space for 89 minutes of every game, except that for 2 split seconds in every game he was where he needed to be to profit from some great work from a team-mate or a minute error from an opponent. Guly's goal on Saturday summed him up for me,he saw the ball coming back a struck it perfectly, something that you just can't put a price on.Just like Connolly,if they get a sniff they're both pretty deadly more times than not. S-Clarke Posted 16 January, 2012 Share Posted 16 January, 2012 Guly looked excellent in my opinion. Led the line well, held the ball up, used it well and dropped off into nice pockets of space which kept opening up. It was probably one of his better performances away this season, as he's never been great away from home. He's an enigma, but an 11 goal enigma...and I'm happy to have him in the squad.
