Honorable mentions to TSW posters for keeping the match thread pleasant today. Felt more like watching the game together at a virtual pub :)

Some good banter today, probably one of the most positive and amusing days on this forum for a long time. Cheers chaps! :)

I just hope Minty made it to the toilet before it was too late...

Didn't see the game today, but one thing I've noticed about Connolly is that he hardly ever scores unless we are awesome. I was there when he scored on his debut, a 3-1 win at Oldham when we battered them. He scored the next game, 3-1 again against Dons. Again we were awesome. This season 4 of his 6 goals came in August when we were playing awesome. Then he finished off our goal of the decade against Boro a couple of months ago... When we were awesome. Then there's his performance today.

I'm not going to knock him, he can certainly do a job, but when the going gets tough and we aren't firing on all cylinders, he can often go missing. He's not like Lambert or Guly who can pop up with a goal out of nowhere when we're in the Sh*t.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"You're going to be second best with 10 men against top of the table.

"The first-half performance wasn't as good as it has been and it has been pretty good for quite a while now. They were better than us.

"I thought it was a frustrating day all round for the players. I didn't think we got the rub of the green with any decisions today. Maybe we didn't earn it."

He relies on quality service, that's for sure, he isn't somebody who could lead our attack or create opportunities himself, but is somebody who manages to get in the right place at the right time. He's a poacher, a goalscorer with a great footballing brain, but not a one-man strike force like you could possibly have with Lambert.

A good post and very true but for today we'll give him credit for a good performance......

Just seen the goals properly on SSN (I did watch the stream but missed the 2nd goal!) - red card was justified but the probable 3-match ban punishment seems a tad harsh.

That "Julie" lad seems to be doing well. (The BBC Producer now seems to accept it is pronounced Ger-Guly, but we'll wait and see).

The point you have overlooked though is that he has played in virtually all the games in which we have been, in your word, awesome.

I'm not sure thats a coincidence.

Here is cotterils view....

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cotterill criticised Southampton's bench for their conduct after having skipper Luke Chambers sent off.

Forest were trailing 1-0 when Chambers was given his marching orders four minutes into the second half and Southampton went on to comfortably win 3-0.

The Forest defender was shown a straight red card for an alleged elbow on Saints striker David Connolly.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins had no doubt that Chambers deserved the red card, arguing: "I have seen the incident again and it was definitely a sending-off - but I (also) thought so at the time."

But Cotterill was upset at the reaction of the visitors' bench following the flashpoint incident that did nothing to help Forest out of their critical position.

He said: "Luke doesn't think he elbowed their player. I couldn't complain about it because from where I was I couldn't see properly but I was annoyed at the way people were in the fourth official's ear.

"I don't think it is right. People should walk away from it and leave it to the referee. What I do know is that we should have had a free-kick just before that for a foul on Marcus Tudgay and if the referee had blown for that, the incident wouldn't have happened.

"But it's an indication that just about everything that can go wrong is going wrong for us. These are tough days.

"Although we didn't play well we could have been two or three goals up before they scored but I accept that we were not the better team with 11 men so it was going to be really difficult for us with 10.

"We were up against a side who are flying high, they are top of the league and their tails are up. We have not been scoring enough goals all season so it was going to be very difficult for us."

Even without 17-goal Rickie Lambert, who was serving the second match of a three-game ban, Southampton had too much firepower for Forest.

They took a 26th-minute lead when Guly Do Prado lashed home a rebound after Connolly's shot from Jack Cork's cross had come back off Forest goalkeeper Lee Camp's legs.

And after Chambers' dismissal, Connolly added a second goal in the 65th minute following Dan Harding's cross and then Morgan Schneiderlin produced a 79th-minute screamer to complete the scoring.

Adkins added: "You have to earn the right to play football and we did that today. We gave a very disciplined defensive performance that enabled us to go and control the game.

"Our principle is to pass the football and we did that very well. We have some exceptionally good footballers in this team and they demonstrated that today.

"I know everyone will be talking about the sending-off but I thought we were in control of the game anyway so I don't think that would have affected the outcome.

"We scored three times and we could have had more and to win two successive away games without Rickie Lambert is very pleasing."

Fantastic to see us doing so well against one of our former bogey teams. Cork and Sneiderlin were amazing but one has to give credit to Dan Harding. Few players put in a better display than Dan. Shame the Skates couldn't muster a goal or two against West Ham but Burnley are fast becoming our knights in armour, often winning against teams close on our heals. Very rewarding day for the team.

Just got home. fantastic day. Without Lambert, Fonte and Chappers in the spine it was pretty even first half but by the end of the game the Forest players were looking at each other in an abject, dispairing way. They were run ragged & a third, maybe a half of the forest supporters had already left. we could have scored 2 or 3 times in the last 15. the red card was a complete no brainer - how anyone could say it was harsh is beyond me. still I havnt seen it on tv so maybe i'm wrong but to me it looked bad and deliberate. in fact at first I thought Forest were going to try and intimidate us, but in fairness it was a clean game bar the assault on Connolly. Hooper please!

How did Lee Holmes play today?

Difficult to say. He came on for a cameo appearance when the game was already won and we were cruising. He forced Camp to make a good fingertip save with a curled effort from outside the box and slotted in well in a team that was keeping possession and running down the clock. Under the given circumstances a solid substitutes performance.

I thought Holmes did well. Caused them a few problems, starting almost immediately after coming on, he made some nice crosses but also did the simple things well. A very solid and confident performance, given his lack of first team action.

Fantastic result.

Game was live in Sweden and has made for a sweeeeet saturday.

Good solid performance. Strong central midfield. Connoly & Guly worked Hardy up front. Jos the man at the back.

Thought the straight red was a tad harsh. Wouldn't want that if it was our c.back. That's life.

Lovin' it

So we had two losses in a row, a shock home defeat followed by a 3-0 away defeat, then turned it round away in the cup and followed up with a 3-0 league win.

That is identical to Man Utd's last 4 games. Not bad company, and shows blips happen to all.

Agree with this, its how you respond to these bad runs that matters as every team will suffer one, last week & today will I'm sure reinforce confidence within the squad. today we were a lot better & more fluent. With Rickie, Chaplow, Fonte, Richardson all hopefully back soon & the indicated 2/3 new signings things are looking well and truly back on track. I'm sure there will be a few more ups & downs this season but that is football.

No, you're bang on. Led with his arm, caught Connoly right in the chops. Stick on red.

Absolutely superb result. Great to see who got the goals. 2 away wins in a row. Wow.

Just what the doctor ordered. Massive shot-in-the-arm for the team.

Was the second half against Coventry the seasons turning(back)-point ???

Indeed what the doctor ordered. Great, professional performance, COYR

What a hypocrite - according to the Solent commentators he was in the 4th official's ear for the entire game. Also according to Solent, Dean Hammond appeared to be at the ref demanding a red card - which they weren't impressed with. To be fair, if it is true, then neither am I. Leave that sort of crap to Brighton.

Great win today, thought we played some fantastic football from start to finish.

Probably just edge the first half, although Forest had a few chances. It was a definite red card and we played the game excellently from that point onwards as we didn't rush for another goal. They were well taken and we could easily have hit 6 had we not missed the odd sitter and Lee Camp not been in good form.

Really good positive result, back to the winning ways of August :)

Oh and I saw Morgan score!
