OK ... so what is a BIG fee ?

There seems to be a word feud here between those who think we dare not spend (say) £6 million on a player (Hooper ?)..and those who I number myself amongst, who suggest we need to spend a bit more on SOME players if we are to secure our Premiership place in an eventual promotion.

Saints' own transfer record is the £4 million for Rory Delap in 2001 ??..so in this day and age... maybe £6 mill.isn't so much ?

Someone out there with better stats. than mine..What level is the record fees for players transferred into Championship clubs?

I know there have been some fairly high-priced transfers in the last few years. Does anyone recall any of them..and how much ?

Surely this could have gone into the existing thread discussing the point? The very one you refer to.

IMO, £6m is about right for a proven quality striker able to play in the NPC immediately, plus the Prem should we win promotion (although, of course, that's not yet proven). If the valuations of JRod, Maynard, Sharp et el of anything up to or over £4m are deemed good value, £6m for somebody who is regarded a better player seems good value to me.

It's also worth considering that in the case that has inspired this debate, we're trying to prise a player from a club who don't want to sell him. It's not like the player has said he wants out, or wants to play at a higher level so needs to leave, as is the case with some other targets. Celtic want to keep Hooper and would be delighted to do so, which means the price will rise if we're serious about buying him.

I think in part it depends on who it is, for example £6 mill on someone like maynard is a big fee / gamble whereas the same money spent on say, Defoe for arguments sake would be seen as a bargain with more emphasis on the signing rather than money spent.

I don't see it being a feud, more a case of semantics over pretty much the same point.

It depends on:

- Our need in the position concerned - how desperate are we?

- The selling clubs desire to sell - do they need to? Do they want to?

- The competition for the signing from other clubs.

- Market forces

- Even then the fee is only 'big' relative to other signings happening about the same time, and in the eye of the beholder. And generally only hindsight can tell us if it was worth it or not.

Any fee is a big fee, if you can't afford it. If the club had 200 million sat in the bank, then 6 million is nothing. It's all speculation on here, but short of an open check book, we are surely running at a loss at the mo, so one signing at 6 million would be bearable, but some on here want several signings, and we have made two all ready, so how much do we spend?

rather than debating how much is a big fee, should we agree how much we are prepared to pay for an adult ticket at SMS.

we can then work out how much we have to spend on players.

£20 a ticket gets you £1m player (plus rest of squad)

£50 a ticket gets you ......

An interesting theory, which becomes completely irrelevant the second we hit the Premier League.

As far as "what's a BIG fee" I'd say outspending our club record would definitely cover it.
