Jesus effing wept, i've just been listening to a recording of the local coast guard commander with the captain who was already on land, telling him to get back on board. I've never heard a professional like that so angry, and understandably, at a captain who kept evading and making excuses. it's available vi Il Corriera della Sera and audioboo

He's in deep sh*t, and rightly so.

If it was not so tragic due to the loss of life....

Anyway, the Captain did not RUN AWAY.

He fell into a Lifeboat by accident after he tripped

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9022170/Costa-Concordia-captain-says-he-tripped-and-fell-into-lifeboat.html

Mr Schettino told investigating magistrates in Grosseto, on the Italian mainland, that he ended up in the lifeboat by accident.

During three hours of interrogation on Tuesday, he reportedly said: “The passengers were pouring onto the decks, taking the lifeboats by assault. I didn’t even have a life jacket because I had given it to one of the passengers. I was trying to get people to get into the boats in an orderly fashion. Suddenly, since the ship was at a 60 to 70 degree angle, I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. That’s how I found myself there.”

He said he got stuck in the lifeboat for an hour before it was lowered into the water off the coast of Giglio island.

Also with him was Dimitri Christidis, the Greek second in command of the Concordia and Silvia Coronica, the third officer, according to La Repubblica newspaper.

Obviously. all 3 Senior Officers must have accidentally tripped up at the same time

I feel a bit sorry for the captain. If he is guilty then I am sure the legal processes will deal with it. The witch hunt is very unpalatable.

As do I. It is clear from the coastguard tapes that his actions after the capsize were deplorable, you don't accidentally fall into a lifeboat with your second & third in command, but as to the actual cause of the accident, only an investigation will come up with the reasons why it happened. I doubt he will get a fair trial now anyway, and this could lead to a mis-trial and probably an appeal.

The captain has already changed his story (twice I think), and is now publicly admitting he went off his offical course (to 'salute' the ship's ex-captain who live on the island) and now admits he left it too late to return to his orignal course and so went into shallow water.

The irony is that the ex-captain is quoted in some reports as saying he never really rated the bloke when he was his second-in-command.

Meanwhile the BBC and others are running stories about crimes, including rape and even murder, on board cruise ships and the difficulty for the victims and their relatives in getting anyone to take any notice, with the cruise companies mainly being interested in hushing things u,p and the authorities not being sure which country's police are responsible for any investigation.

I reckon if you have any shares in cruise companies, now might be a good time to get rid!

QPS, a maritime software company from Netherlands, has published a to the minute simulation based on the complete

AIS data (including the timeframe of the collision that was previously unavailable).

Apparently the ship was stopped down from 16 to 6 Knots as a result of the collision.

It is also remarkable, that the maneuver to beach the CC on the shore lasted almost one hour. The ship came to a stop at around 22.50 hours.

That's very interesting, thanks. It would appear to me that the ship was not under control when it was grounded, rather it was blown ashore by the north-easterly wind. It's a shame it couldn't have hit sand and mud instead of rocks. I notice that it is not far from the 'no anchoring' symbol.

On the scale of 1-10 on the Oh **** not again ratings, this probably gets a 25 in terms of giving the Italians further Nightmares

A cruise ship belonging to same company as Costa Concordia with more than 1,000 passengers and crew on board is adrift in the Indian Ocean after a fire broke out in its electrical room.

Likely to be a similar outcome to the Carnival Splendor fire last year. Problem is that electrical fires take out huge amounts of wiring and travel between compartments via the trunking so its very easy for redundant systems to be damaged. Whilst there is redundancy of engines they tend not to have two engine control rooms, so if that catches fire you're screwed. Think they're set for a couple of days with no aircon, hot food, toilets, or, more importantly, slots and beer. Going to take that long to tow them in to the Seychelles and then the problem comes with making repairs, not really equipped to do that out there. Carnival Splendor took 3-4 months to recommission in a state-of-the-art dockyard in San Diego.
