Clapham Saint Posted 13 January, 2012 Posted 13 January, 2012 I'm considering replacing my current laptop. To be honest it still runs most things (games) ok(ish) but it starting to chugg a little bit. I've looked around and novatech seem to offer a reasonable machine. http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/range/eliteultimate2760.html?th=g Does anybody have any experience of dealing with them? I'm sure somebody warned m off them 5 years or so ago but have they improved since? Any thoughts/advice from any of you that have experience of them greatly appreciated. Before anybody points it out, I know that I can get more for my money (gaming performance wise) with a desktop but unfortunately I need to be mobile. CS
mdearlove Posted 13 January, 2012 Posted 13 January, 2012 had no issues with stuff bought from them - bought a barebones pc and components and all worked as expected and nothing has died.
sotonjoe Posted 13 January, 2012 Posted 13 January, 2012 Only used them for barebones desktop stuff so not sure about the laptop. First kit I had from them was already fried when I got it out the box (wouldn't even power up) but they were happy to swap it for a replacement which worked fine. It didn't take long (couple of years) for the power button to get a bit sticky and then the thing wouldn't turn on properly. I guess that's what you get with cheap cases. So they're fine, but you can tell the cheap bits are cheap I guess!
Saint_Jonny Posted 15 January, 2012 Posted 15 January, 2012 A laptop with 16gb of memory. Mind. Blown.
sotonjoe Posted 15 January, 2012 Posted 15 January, 2012 Just checked the link and personally think anyone willing to pay that sort of money for a laptop and not get a Mac is nuts tbh. PC is the way to go if you want a cheap machine.
JackFrost Posted 15 January, 2012 Posted 15 January, 2012 Novatech's customer service has been second to none from my experience. Had no problems with them, did once get a faulty HD but they had it picked up by a courier and replaced within a very short time

mdearlove Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Next work laptop comes with 32GB memory! Need it for running virtualised training servers
Saint_Jonny Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Really!? I make assets for video games and I've only nudged the edge of 8gb of memory a couple of times! Mental! I was thinking of doubling to 16gb soon though since memory is so cheap at the moment.
mdearlove Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 yep - I need to run multiple hard core IBM software products at the same time - my latest product will need a combined 24GB for a training set up
St Marco Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Used them loads of times and they have been great. To be honest though I built a new mega pc recently and money wise was a lot cheaper to go through these guys http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ everything i ordered got here the next morning. Had a bit of ram that was faulty and they replaced it next day too.
Mattio Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Don't use PC's any more but they were the only ones I used when I did!
Marsdinho Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I used to work for them a few years ago. Having been on the "inside" I can vouch for them. Still go to novatech to get my IT stuff. For a while they were the only company in the uk allowed to rebrand laptops, the laptops would come from the same factory that Toshiba laptops came from, novatech bought them and stuck their own name on it, then sold it for about £100 less that exactly the same laptop that had a toshiba sticker on.

PC is the way to go if you want a cheap machine. Note that it has no O.S. installed either. Not a fantastic spec for the price.
timebomb Posted 17 January, 2012 Posted 17 January, 2012 Dell XPS is a great all rounder and some good offers at the moment. When I bought mine 3yrs ago I phoned the order through and the guy knocked quite a lot off the extras I had - warranty and case. Whatever you do go for get an extended warranty, I had one of the graphics cards fail after 14 months and would have cost about £300! http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=n00x7m17&c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&model_id=xps-l702x
stu0x Posted 22 January, 2012 Posted 22 January, 2012 Ironically enough, Novatech are from Portsmouth... However, they are very good. I live just down the road from one of their 'clean' (ie non-skate) branches and as a result get most of my kit from them, but used them for mail order prior to moving here. Found them to be excellent in every regard.
stthrobber Posted 28 January, 2012 Posted 28 January, 2012 Well I bought a new desktop system from them today and it doesnt work. It doesn't boot up and the monitor just blinks. By the time I'd finished testing, their tech support lines were closed. Not a good experience so far

By the time I'd finished testing, their tech support lines were closed. Not a good experience so far Did you buy it with an operating system installed....
stthrobber Posted 29 January, 2012 Posted 29 January, 2012 Yes I did. I would have been happy to install it myself, but there was nothing on the screen to respond to. It just sort of blinked every 2-3 seconds
stu0x Posted 29 January, 2012 Posted 29 January, 2012 Right, these sorts of problems are usually quite easy to diagnose, and are more often than not down to a loose connection rather than a faulty part. So you turn it on, but theres nothing on the screen and the monitor light flashes on standby? That means theres no video signal coming through. When you power up the box, can you hear the fans coming on? And the hard disks spinning up? If so, the problem is almost certainly the graphics card. Try re-seating it.
stthrobber Posted 29 January, 2012 Posted 29 January, 2012 (edited) That's exactly what happened. I took it back this morning and the guy showed me that I had been trying to connect the DVI cable to the wrong output, there were 2 other DVI connections down at the bottom of the board and I hadn't seen them. I felt a complete kn*b but at least it's working fine and dandy now Edited 29 January, 2012 by stthrobber
Secret Site Agent Posted 30 January, 2012 Posted 30 January, 2012 I'm typing this on a 5 year old Acer laptop I bought from them for my daughter when she was at uni. My last two desktops have comef rom them and I hve also attended a course they did on building your own desktop. I get all my upgrades and hardware from them, their customer service is next to none, (installed a graphics card, couldn't get ot to work, did something silly, and they put it right) and I like the way I can say to them 'will this work in my puter? ' and they look it up and say yes, no or your be better with this one. in answer yes, I can recommend.
Joey-deacons-left-nut Posted 11 February, 2012 Posted 11 February, 2012 Next work laptop comes with 32GB memory! Need it for running virtualised training servers With only 1hd??? Will run like utter poop!
