Why Saints fans got arrested against Brighton.

At Brighton away one guy got arrested for being near a group who were chanting homophobic chants. They then decided to arrest him in front of all the saints fans at half time which involved around 30 stewards and 20 police. Totally over the top and caused a situation that could have easily been avoided.

Very interesting, good spot. I bet they are very chuffed with themselves.

I see Adrian has already used the buzz word 'tolerate', goes in the same bracket as 'diversity'.

I struggle to see how a police force can be gay-friendly? As opposed to what, a non gay- friendly force..

Christ we have some morons don't we. So rather than praise the fact we have a force that doesn't tolerate discrimination, we use it to shift the blame when idiots are arrested? Fcking embarrassing in this day and age we still have people so pathetic they're that obsessed with who others are sleeping with and need to abuse people for it. And others moaning about gay groups existing when straight groups don't, the genius logic of someone with no experience of discrimination. A straight group isn't needed for the same reason a white middle class group isn't needed.

Even more dense with Brighton. A team of scummy, deluded, playacting cheats with a pathetic excuse for a manager, yet people choose to focus on antics of the gay community?

Spot on!

On the train back from Brighton I was stood next to two members of Hampshire/British Transport Police who had been part of the policing for the game. I had a long chat with them about the bubble game and the issue of homophobic chanting came up. He mentioned that a Saints fan had been arrested at half time, not for singing the very boring boyfriend chant, but for `over the top offensive chants and comments'. Sounds like the same guy to me. Considering the earlier arrests at the home game the fans knew the score and besides there is no place for this sort of abusive in a modern society. If the fella had been shouting racist taunts at opposing fans would you be chastising the police for arresting the guy? Is it is the number of officers involved that you have a problem with?

I think we need a few chants to direct at the hants contabulary at future games, how about "we can see you holding hands? "

"...force full of faggots, we've got a force full of faggots, force full of faaaaggots"

Something like that?

I love the way they can arrest people for making comments at football games but they cannot catch hardened murderers very often.

Even the double murder in Birmingham , they have put out an appeal and leaflets asking if anybody saw anything unusual to contact them, Well yes Mr Plod

Bit like up here police regularly appeal on the radio or newspaper using the following comment

Anyone with information regarding the incident should call Kirkwall Police Station on

What friggin incident. lets get back to real policing . If Morse, frost and taggert can solve crimes in an hour with adverts so can the real police.

It was no coincidence i had a camera shoved in my face then throughout the match against Brighton in the Itchen North. Intent on catching people out.

I asked one of the OB why it was necessary at half time he didn't have a f*cking clue.

And people are still stupid enough to sing/shout the homophobic stuff. If you do it when you know you're being watched, you deserve to be caught.

No, they've wasted far too much time and money on picking out football fans and nicking them for doing f*ck all. As usual.

You do know that thousands of these kind of arrests are made outside of football don't you. Same as assault and drinking and disorderly. Football is part of society as as are other activities. That's it Kevin pick on the drinkers easy target!

Probably because a murderer does not stand in front of the police singing a song about what an idiot is is/has been.

It just reminds me of the Viz cartoon, "Meet PC Riah, the coppers who's queer..".

Don't suppose that is passed around the Hants Constabulary canteen these days.

So should the 10k plus supporters at the Bolton game last year all be arrested for singing 'u look like a watsit' to their Ginger keeper? PC has gone mad! We would all just stop talking to each other! And everyone who sings you fat bastard at every other football game, and when saints fans sing 'he SHORT he's FAT he's not as GOOD as matt' to Paul Gascogne! They should all be arrested to! Without banter, football is just another boring sport! It's popular and world played for a reason, the PC brigade and FA and UEFA are doing ther best to destroy it!

Do you honestly believe there isn't a disproportionately high level of police focus on football matches & fans?

Well if there was only one arrest at half time, it must be the same guy. I was stood next to him and he wasn't over offensive. In fact, I don't think he even joined in with the boring boyfriend chants. And yes, I also had a problem with the number of officers involved. It created a situation that could easily been avoided.

And what exactly is 'over offensive'? Surely offence is subjective? What if I'm totally overly offended by the smell or look of someone? Can I complain? Can I get this overly offensive person objected? As already mentioned, it's PC gone mad!

Compared to what, on the streets? At music festivals, in town centres during the day, at protest marches, or any other events. I would say there are more police at events that are most likely to have trouble.

Take the last student protest march in the centre of London at the end of November, 2000 protesters and 4000 police. Now I do not think less than 100 police officers at a ground with 22,000 supporters is disproportionate.

I would imagine `does your boyfriend know your here?' would be overlooked, but someone shouting in an hostile manner "**** off you queer ****" would probably draw attention from the police. The term "over the top" was used by the policeman I spoke to. If you were there then you know a damn sight more than I about this specific arrest. I find it hard to believe that one guy was picked out and he just happened to be the person that wasn't doing anything whilst all around him were.

Being arrested for the above mentioned phrase is not PC going mad, just as arresting someone for shouting **** off you black **** is not PC gone mad.

Well if its the same guy (and it sounds like it) he didn't do anything. We were quite close to the home fans in the main stand so there was normal banter exchanged but nothing at all along the lines of "**** off you queer ****". I did hear stuff like this, as well as the normal boring chants. And a new one to me "Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" chants. But not by him. So getting arrested for this? Yes, it's PC gone mad. As for the random racist example you use, of course it's not. Racism is actually against ground regulations for a start.

The problem I have with this is where do you draw the line? Homophobic chanting is obviously wrong but aren't the police effectively saying that insulting the gay community is wrong but insulting fat people or ginger people is ok..

You can't single out one social group and say they can't have chants aimed at them but this group can...

Tricky...

Has there been a history of violence against the fat or the read headed then? I mean I remember that as recently as the 60s practicing overeating was against the law but otherwise are you seriously comparing the different scenarios?

I was sat close to the palace fans at St Mary's recently when we beat them 2-0. They were all singing something homophobic about Brighton. I found it almost as pathetic as their pretend rivalry.

And how many Palace fans were arrested by our gay friendly constabulary that day ?

And if there was any level of violence involved you have a point, but this is in regards to words, not actions. Or do fat people or ginger people not feel anything when they're insulted?

Gaybashing doesn't come into this in the slightest,...
