Netflix, a popular streaming service in the US, has launched in the UK. This is rather big in the US, as anyone who listens to US-based podcasts will know.

I'm also a member of LoveFILM, which also does streaming. Thus far, finding Netflix to be much better quality, in terms of selection and quality ( it does HD, for example ).

Anyone else using this yet?

Any recommendations? I've been catching up on The Thick of It. Damn, that's a good show.

Thanks for the heads up, I've been using dodgy streaming sites like watchseries.eu to catch up on mostly US shows but I always envied the Americans for their netflix which seems a pretty cheap and convenient way of watching stuff.

I wouldn't recommend anything particular except for the obvious like Breaking Bad. I've been watching Homeland this week which I don't think has been shown over here yet but is kind of like 24 except with tits. Claire Danes is in it playing like this hot CIA agent and one time she had to get to work and didn't have time to shower so she just grabs a cloth and wipes off her vag with it. Sweet. I've kept watching hoping that she does it again but so far it ain't happening. Like she's driving round urgently looking for terrorists and I'm thinking, come on Claire you must be getting a bit steamy down there now and you're far too busy and important to be bathing, why not give it a quick wipe? But she's either not hearing me or they're leaving it for the series finale.

The Thick of It is definitely the business, did you see the movie I think it was called In The Loop? That was good too though I didn't like how they had to ditch the paedophile and give his part to that guy from the Rev, though he ain't bad in himself it wasn't quite the same.

I know this isn't exactly the Homeland thread but I just remembered this other bit. The other main character is this Ginge guy who I'm pretty sure is British, the actor I mean I've seen him in something, and he plays this marine who was captured by terrorists in Iraq and just escaped after 7 years. Anyway he has this wife who is really implausibly hot. While he was away she's been slutting around ****ing all his mates so when he comes back she's pretty frustrated that she has to make nice and pretend to be the faithful wife and not get day to day bonings from all variety of local cock.

Anyway the ginger marine I don't know if he suspects something but he gives the hot wife this really aggresive boning and she's so gutted cos she's used to getting hour long foreplay sessions that she starts proper crying, and after that he can't be bothered to do her anymore and he starts boning Claire Danes instead. The hot wife though really needs it and tries to entice him by getting her boobs out in the next episode. They're really nice boobs. Anyway the ginger marine approaches her and kneels down and she thinks she's going to get a nice romantic licking out but instead he just gets his chap out and cracks one off. Made me laugh because I was doing the exact same thing. They don't show you what happened next but after it cuts away I'm pretty sure he wipes it all over her simpering, cheating face.

Netflix works on Smart TVs, Xbox, PS3, Wii, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android handsets so should pretty much cover everyone! Selection is ropey right now but it will improve with time.

Whats the cost compared to Lovefilm and do you need a certain broadband speed?

£5.99 a month, unlimited streaming to anything on the site. If the selection was kinda ubiquitous like it is in the US it would be outstanding value for money. Fingers crossed it improves.

Liking this a lot so far, but mainly because there are quite a few things on there that I've never gotten around to watching and quite fancied, such as Weeds or Arrested Development.

Was going to get a streaming account on Lovefilm for £4.99 to use on Xbox360 then saw this for £5.99.

Apart from the fact that it seems as though I could watch Netflix stuff on my Android phone (if I really wanted to), is there anything to justify the extra cost? Which has the best library? From above, it sounds as though that would be Lovefilm.

I think Love film limit the number of views per month and they don't offer TV shows, plus you have to cancel by phoning up. Netflix (ok it's not as up-to-date yet) but they offer TV shows and unlimited number of views, you can also cancel your membership at anytime via the web and their customer services department is actually very good (ok based in the states but it's 24/7 and they speak English).

I have their free trial at the moment and have found quite a few things to watch this week to keep me entertained, so far better than Sky.

Mate, it's a quid! :D

I have both, and I prefer the stuff on Netflix.

I think it's a pretty good selection, plus it has TV series, which I don't think Lovefilm has.

I use hotspot VPN to access US netflixs, it's so much better!!! Around 1500 documentaries as opposed to the 70 odd the uk site has.

What is hotspot VPN?

Posted

It's a program that hides the country of origin you are watching netflix from and makes it believe youre in the US, so you get all the American content.

You can download it from the app store for your iPhone or iPad

You can also download the windows based program for your laptop

how did you do it....is it much better?

as for the PS3, you have to change your primary and secondary DNS settings...apparently

also, do you have to use a wireless router to use hotspot vpn etc

Once you've installed the app on your iPhone it will add this "VPN" option on you settings menu and as soon as you flick it to on you are ready to go!! It's really simple

The US version seems better but from what I can tell there is also good stuff on the UK site which isn't on the US,

eg last night could only find Dexter on the UK site.

OK this has been working for me with V Shield thingy but today Im getting:

"Sorry, Netflix hasn't arrived in this part of the world yet"

Are they onto us?

I like my Netflix here in the US. We have the DVD option as well where they send you a dvd from a queue you set up for stuff not available on the streaming service. That said, not much else I can add since it has a different library than the UK one. A lot of foreign cinema, documentaries, older films, independent films and TV series (a fair bit of UK stuff but mostly American). Cancelled my HBO and Showtime subscriptions, although current series from these channels are not available on Netflix, I can download them.

The subscription price went up last year and it lost a lot of customers but there has been quite a good library increase.

Got a very big tip for UK Netflix subscribers, or indeed, anyone who wants to use a US-only streaming service.

Plugin for FF and Chrome called Media Hint. Just install and hey presto, US Netflix.

The big plus of this approach is that no VPN is required. VPN worked, but the relaying meant that barely anything was in HD. It is now.

You heard bout this netflix house of cards thing pap? You like house of cards don't you, pretty sure i only watched it cos you recommended it. I read they is about to release a 10 part remake exclusive for netflix. David Fincher is something to do with it so it may not suck.

Edit: some infos bout it here http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/01/30/david-fincher-beau-willimon-kate-mara-on-netflix-s-house-of-cards.html

I had heard of this, and may give it a go.

The original series was excellent, despite people talking to the camera.

I signed up netflix specifically to watch the House Of Cards. It's a good show! Pretty addictive I watched like 6 episodes over course of weekend. It has good acting and the production values is of HBO standard i should say.

It is bit different from the BBC series tho, these are the things I didn't like:

  • There is boring sub-plots bout his wife and her stupid vanity project digging wells in africa & also having affair with photographer
  • In the original the main guy is much smarter than everyone else, but in this one they have tv debate and the other guy makes him look like FOOL. I did not like this.
  • They guy in the BBC was better than Kevin Spacey. Spacey is still quite good tho!

I recommend people watch this show! You can actually get free 30 day trial of Netflix, watch this show and then cancel if you is tight!

Don't you feel bad bout mugging off the artists tho Delldays? I don't mind paying a little bit to watch stuff, £5.99 per month don't seem that bad.

Think it's excellent value for money, particularly on PC with the Media Hint plug-in.
