Papa Shango Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Have written in depth about our current form, discussing why we've been less impressive over the last 8 games compared to the first 17. Also look at possible solutions to problems and the strength and weaknesses of our promotion rivals. Give it a read: http://www.thesaintshub.com/wherediditallgowrong.html Where does everyone else think we have been going wrong in the last 7 weeks or so? John B Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 The fidfteen regulars did incredibly well early on, but the hectic schedule has really caught up with the team recently and the club did not invest enough in the summer for automatic promotion. Perhaps the club was not expecting promotion this season

Give it a read: http://www.thesaintshub.com/wherediditallgowrong.html Where does everyone else think we have been going wrong in the last 7 weeks or so? I think we have a very good nucleus of a team. They have done brilliantly but are understandably worn out and some key players have picked up injuries that they may still be carrying. In short, we could have done with a bit more strengthening over the summer if we had been serious about promotion. The January transfer window is our last chance to strengthen the squad but as I have said many times I am not sure we have the resources or the ambition to do so this season. My hunch is that the management will be happy with a mid table finish, which would have been enough for most at the start of the season, but will disappoint many after the great start. Now, I think that is a reasonably balance post, but like hypo and Alpine have found I expect a load of abuse from certain posters !
hypochondriac Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Tiredness in the regular players, lack of depth as we were unable to give the regulars a rest without seeing a big drop in quality, the terribly unfortunate injury to Chaplow got rid of our urgency in midfield, teams have figured us out more and close us down quicker than before and are not as open, Lambert has been out for a few games and we don't do much to change things (or we don't have the resources to make effective changes.) if our setup with Lambert as the main man isn't working, Lallana has come back from injury and not reached the same heights as he did before. Those are the reasons why IMO.

Perhaps the club was not expecting promotion this season I agree with this although it was more of a case of lets not set our hopes too high and see where we are at the turn of the year. That would explain Adkins "hope to be in top ten" comment. We shall see from who we get in this window.

If we don't strengthen in the window, then I think this is confirmation that NA was always see the season as one of consolidation, which is what I said all along. Matthew Le God Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 If we don't strengthen in the window. Saints have already signed two players in the January window! Which is more than can be said of most Championship clubs.

Hoover, technically yes, but not really a new signing as he has been playing for a while. Has Lee been signed ? Couldn't see any official notification. Couldn't see any official notification. If Saints hadn't signed Hooiveld he would have returned to Celtic at the beginning of January. I really can;t see why you continually overlook him. As for Lee, he has now all but signed. It is going to happen Mr Dalek. On the other hand, do you think if we sign Lee that is enough for a push on automatic promotion ? I don't ! What makes you think there won't be any more signings? Adkins has said there will be and Neil Lennon has confirmed Saints enquiries for Commons and Hooper. Clubs looking to "consolidate" as you keep saying don't do that. I'm at a loss why you keep on with this, the club's transfer activity in the summer window achieved 1st position for when the next window opened. The activity in the summer was very successful and achieved its aims.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Your first point is a bit odd, I have never overlooked Hooiveld, and my point is more than fair. I agree Lee is all but signed and he could be a great buy, but equally he is more of an unknown quantity than some of the players in the UK leagues. NA has said there will be more transfers....maybe. bender Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Some crap certainly being said on here. We may have had mid table in mind in august. However we are top now even if it is a surprise and the board would be stupid to not take advantage of this and invest for this final push. This jap shows a signal of intent and I think there could be more to come.

Dr Who? Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 Tiredness is the key here. We had the chance to take the team away about a month ago, but no break was offered. They need a break, mentally and physically. We are not going to get it now, so new players are needed.

Very much looking forward to seeing these new players boosting our team on Saturday.........and wondering which players who have been regulars in the side until now, will be dropping down the order. brmbrm Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 Possibly, just possibly, we were overachieving in the first 17 games? OK, I know its a wild theory, but its possible. And also we are underachieveing now.

derry Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 Five games with the hopeless experiment of Schneiderlin, Cork and Hammond with the out of form Lallana scoring 2 goals and conceding 7 in four and a half games. Hopefully the lesson has been learnt and SDR will be back on the right alternatively Guly until Chaplow is completely fit.
DrunkenSaint Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 To me keeping in players who is under achieving ie Gully and keeping the same tactics week in week out has been our downfall. The diamond worked for a while then failed and kept failing but no change was made. Gully was useless for 6 games? in a row but he stayed in the starting 11, some games it was like we were playing with 10 men. Teams have now found out a way of defeating our strong midfield, by fielding 5 midfielder's against us i still don't see why we don't to the same and match them, a 451 formation can be turned into a 433 while on the attack. Our youngsters gave a good performance against Coventry, we could of used some of their young determination in december.
Micky Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 Tiredness - I don't quite understand that argument. So are we saying that we are getting tired but other teams are not - cant see it. On the other hand though, I think that this might have something to do with it: Possibly, just possibly, we were overachieving in the first 17 games? OK, I know its a wild theory, but its possible. And also we are underachieveing now. What is it they say about form and class - we'll see if it's true now won't we.
