Bolton 1-2 Saints - FA Youth Cup

That was a cracking run from Stephens for the second goal. Great header for the first from Moore too.

YOOOOFFFF.

I am hoping we get to the YOOF cup final and play a London team over 2 legs, would be a well up for that.

Chelsea would be good. Already beaten them this season too.

What's happened to the YOOOF chant? They must have all grown up a bit now I guess!

I still consider myself as YOOF (albeit with quite a few grey hairs)

and i reckon in a cup final we'd have a few hundred turn up at Stamford Bridge for that

Difficult to really tell with the way the academy league structure is split - for example, Bolton are rock bottom of their division yet seemed to give us a tough game last night - but here's the remaining teams and their league positions, 10 teams in each group (group in brackets):

Coventry (B) 1st

Newcastle (D) 1st

Man City © 1st

Fulham (A) 2nd

Reading (B) 2nd

Saints - (A) 3rd

Leicester (B) 3rd

Derby (D) 3rd

Tottenham (B) 4th

Blackburn © 4th

Charlton (A) 5th

Everton © 5th

West Ham (A) 6th

Watford (B) 6th

Stoke © 6th

Chelsea (A) 7th

Man United © 7th

West Brom © 8th

Ipswich (A) 9th

Portsmouth (A) 10th

Nottingham Forest (D) 10th

Swansea - not in PL Academy structure

Swindon - not in PL Academy structure

Peterborough - not in PL Academy structure

Brentford - not in PL Academy structure

Burnley - not in PL Academy structure

QPR - not in PL Academy structure

Wigan - not in PL Academy structure

So of the sides who have been strong in the league this season, Arsenal (leaders in Group A), Wolves and Barnsley (2nd in Groups C and D respectively) and Liverpool and Derby (3rd in Groups C and D respectively) have all been eliminated already.

With clubs with Swansea and QPR not in the Premier adademy structure, any idea how Pompey can afford to sustain their status?

I wouldn't say that QPR and Swansea are necessarily not in the PL Academy structure for financial reasons. They might not have the required infrastructure or even the desire to invest the required funds on an annual basis. I don't think QPR have brought a player through their youth system for years - expect they felt it wasn't worthwhile when Chelsea and Fulham could just poach anyone with any talent. Fulham are particularly bad for it.

Alternatively, they might even feel that their system is good enough as it is without needing the Premier League's approval.

As for Pompey maintaining their PL Academy status, to be honest I have absolutely no problem in them investing in their youth system as it's probably the only way they've got a fighting chance of becoming a self-sustainable club. If only they were to get rid of their £20k-a-week players from the first team...

Nice one, interesting to hear we have skates away on saturday - hopefully we'll get some revenge for defeat earlier in the season

Away at Stoneham!!

Wonder if we will field a stronger side than when we lost at Staplewood 1-0 before Xmas

Interesting that Pompey play their Youth cup game next Weds so may rest some of their better players for Saturday

It seems Saints academy sides from under 8 up to under 18's are using a 4-2-3-1 system, Adkins referred to this in interview after the Coventry game. This might be the "Southampton style" Cortese spoke of in his statement on the OS in May 2010 and may see the first team use it much more (they already have this season for spells). Makes sense to have the same philosophy for style of play from the youngest academy side right up to the first team.

Its waht they started in Germany in 2000 after they had been crap for a coupel of tournamnets across the national and club academies to all players playing a similar style and could slot in - reaping the benefits now as the system allows a nice combination of play styles, patient build ups as well as more direct fast breaks as we saw in the WC... naturally you need the players as well, but I think the biggest problem with England has been players coming in from clubs that play totally differnt styles, out of position and demotivated, knackered and an bunch of overpaid knobs - thing we need a winter break - if we dont want to lose the chrimbo fixtures fair enough have it in Jan... but thats for another thread. kids seem to be doing good right now.

We have a game in hand over Fulham and the Arse though and could be table toppers soon :) City are the team to fear in the youth cup I think, Newcastle are doing really well but they're in a weak league Coventry are also impressing in a strongish league but ours and group C's look far stronger than the other 2.

The team have an excellent chance of going all the way. They are well drilled and have a great understanding - and are all good footballers.

The only thing to be weary of is if they come up against a big physical team. We are not the biggest and could be bullied out of a game as physical advantages make much more of an impact at youth level.

I would say about 700-1000 there. Not many Saints fans - a small handful scattered about. Locals didn't take too kindly to any encouragement for our lads

Was friendly enough where I was sitting but the local school kids did get a bit excited when we went 2-1 up.

Quite a few scouts there also as you might expect. The MU guy was sat behind me.

Thought Bolton had the better of the first half when we kept giving away possession. The final result was well deserved though for a much better 2nd half when Bolton seemed to run out of steam.

Enjoyed the game though the first half seemed stop start. Both teams gave the ball away or mis-placed/over hit passes but there was a fine rain and the pitch was fast. Bolton had two very tricky wingers and a centre half who won everything in the air. When we played it on the ground we put him in all sorts of problems. Saints could have been two up with a header cleared off the line and Moore clipping the post with a free kick. We struggled at corners as it has been mentioned Saints aren't a big side. Second half Saints upped the tempo and were rewarded with the goals.

Some player reviews although on my one and only viewing of the lads this may be a little harsh. I was sat in amongst the lads parents and I overheard them saying that the first half was the worst they've played ever.

Steve Mowthorpe - Not a lot to do and quite comfortable. Slipped while kicking a couple of times in the second half and one kick in the first half which went stright toa Bolton forward.

Jack Stephens - my MOM. Mazy run to set up winner. Solid in the tackle and good distribution. Not sure right back is his position as he could easily play defensive midfield.

Luke Shaw - Got skinned by the winger a few times but recovered well and got the tackle in. Looked good going forward but sometimes wasn't picked out by a pass when in acres of space. Subbed late on.

Jordan Turnbull - Confident lad. Nothing seemed to phase him and he looked controlled on the ball.

Bevis Mugabe - Big lad who was fearless in the tackle and threw himself into some blocks when Bolton were trying to get back into the game late on.

Conor Sullivan - Came on for Shaw and didn't do anything wrong.

Sam McQueen - Troubled Boltons right back but dived into a few tackles

Calum Chambers - Good winger with plenty of skills. Stuck to the touch line and neat and tidy on the ball.

Harrison Reed - came on as sub. Hassled the Bolton midfield and won the ball back several times. Scholes-esque but can tackle.

James Ward-Prowse - It could have been Morgan in the middle. talented lad with an eye for a pass.

Joe Curtis - I'm afraid I didn't notice too much of Joe.

Corby Moore - Great header for the goal. Gets stuck in and a worthy captain for the night.

Jake Sinclair - Lacked a bit of composure but looked a threat. Bolton booted him in the air loads of times but were only penalised once! Took the winner well and could have a few others. Pacey and small. Might do with a move out on the wing. Boo-ed by the Bolton fans which was bizarre.

Overall a good away win but not the best performance. team spirit was great and the lads deserved the win. Pity they weren't playing Wigan away in the next round as that would be another short trip for me.

A young lad called Bamford got 5. Don't know what they are like, they could be good or Wigan could be really bad!

It is hard to say as different players often play in the youth cup who don’t play in other games, like last year Chamberlain played for us, however Forest are currently bottom of their division (group D) whereas Saints are 2nd in ours.

Hopefully we put a strong side out and get through the the ¼ finals, would be good practice for the lads and a good chance for fans to get along to St Marys and see them play.

According to http://www.thefa.com/Competitions/FACompetitions/TheFAYouthCup/Fixtures

Saints vs Forest is scheduled for Saturday 11th February with 1900hrs kick-off - so would point towards Staplewood.

Perhaps the Club may try to persuade fans to stay on at St Marys after the Burnley game if they plan to hold it there, but it would be a bit of a logistical nightmare getting both senior teams out the dressing rooms to let the youth teams in!

The Under-18s will play Nottingham Forest at St. Mary's on Wednesday 25th January. Kick-off 7pm.

The home tie for Saints is a reward for seeing off Bolton in the previous round, and they face a Forest team who safely came through round four with an emphatic 9-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

Jason Dodd's side are in terrific form in league and cup with a record of seven consecutive wins going into another league clash with Norwich at Staplewood on Saturday.

Throw your support behind the youngsters at St. Mary's on Wednesday evening as they bid for Youth Cup glory this season.

Tickets will be available to be on the night from the turnstiles at St. Mary's

Entry will be by cash at the turnstile as follows:

£5 Adults

£3 Over 65 and Under 17

Highly recommend you go if you can make it - good fun and the team are very good too. Some real prospects in this group.
