Have we as fans got to up our game?

Into 2012 have we as fans got to up our support? Over 2,000 to Forest, surely right from the off we must keep the tempo positive and loud. This week-end is when most people seem to think we getting knocked off our perch!

Please all going give it a bit extra.

Come you Saints.

As usual, we'll all stand, we'll start off making a lot of noise and then it'll fade away.

Two out of three isn't too bad, we could be worse. We were brilliant at the tail end of last season, Brentford, Leyton Orient and Plymouth were all superb atmospheres. We started off well this season, but every song we sing has seemingly been replaced by "we are southampton, we're top of the league" recently. At least dropping down to 2nd will mean us having to do something different!

Hopefully. Getting bored of singing that song or something to the same tune.

This season we've been (from the ones I've been too)

Loud at Leicester

OK at Derby

Quiet at Burnley

Terrible at Donny

TBH I've not done a northern ish away game where the fans have been awesome. Going to places like Watford, Reading and Brizzle the fans are bang up for it.

Saying that Oldham in 09 was good, as was Walsall that season.

Don't need to up our game in respect of numbers as we have been taking decent support everywhere this season. We do need to up it in how vocal and original we are though. Mind you I shouldn't complain as I never start songs these days and only join in with ones I like!

I think the good run has put us under pressure to stay at the top, and that affects the fans. Instead of just enjoying the ride, the fans get nervous as hell if it's not going to plan.

That, and the tw*ts that insist on speeding up every chant with clapping and banging kills of chants before they've started.

I think our numbers are decent away from home, could be better at SMS. I wish they'd start selling blocks 1-3 instead of 43-44, I think the Northam atmosphere suffers when there are a couple of hundred strangers (no, I'm not having a dig) between the usual crowd and the away fans. Obviously we want more fans in, but I think it would benefit the atmosphere if those extras were next to the away fans on the other side.

City ground is a good place to make noise - regardless of the circumstance. In recent times, can't remember us louder anywhere than the final day of 2008/09 season. Still remember the 1996/97 season when we did them 3-1 in what was a proper 6-pointer. Cracking atmosphere that day.

Agree that the numbers this year have surpassed my expectations on virtually every away game, but in noise levels people seem to want to go all the way to an away game and sit in silence.

The OP is right that we need to be more vocal.

I would agree with that.

Too many of our fans are happy just to sit/stand in silence. Look at Pompey away, i was trying so hard to get things going but was surrounded by people who would rather not get behind the lads. As its been mentioned above, we often start off well and then it just dies out. Our away support can acctually often become good when we go 1 down. At home though too many of our fans just perk up when we're winning. And are the same ones to sing your support is f*cking **** to the likes of Carlisle who have just traveled 6 hours and are 2-0 down, leave it out. I always help people if they're trying to start something up, as long as its a decent song that is. Great memories of Orient- whole stand singing their hearts out.

Our support fustrates me because it CAN be so good at times.

Our numbers are good but our songs are simply awful the majority of the time. Cringingly embarrasing chants like "Steeeeeve" and "Your support is effing sh*t", "I've got a shed", "When I was just a little boy" being sung at places like Coventry. The skates took the pee when we did the arms to the left and right for the Lallana song and right they were too thinking about it. Songs about the team or individual players are what we need, not mundane chanting of the name or abusing Pompey every five minutes. Palace fans were excellent last night and they were pretty good when we went there a couple of rounds ago. If not entirely original (I think there is German influence to their chanting) at least they were different from the normal dross we hear at St Marys. We've got the numbers but no originality. Blokes of my age don't want to sing about Pompey (unless we're playing them) or Steve, we want to support the team. OWTSGMI is too quick most of the time so it's no wonder the majority of fans don't bother to sing I'm too old to start singing (I used to do it) but I do join in for supportive songs. Come on - there must be a group of fans out there somewhere who can come up with something better than STEEEEEEEEEEVEEEE!!

Right if there is one thing I've learned from this message board it's that no two people can agree on our support. Read a just back from the match thread and see two people who sat in the same stand give two very different versions of our amazing/s hit /sad/embarrassing/best ever support.................:shakey:

I'd say that's pretty much spot on Orange, i find our support incredibly frustrating, we have shown at times we can be good, but more often than not it is cringeworthy songs, this is how we should be all the time

Anyone can follow a team when they are top. How many would we take if we were bottom?

will be interesting if Middlesbrough away is a promotion decider, would be good to take 5000 up there rather than the usual 400 we used to take in the Prem

We only get that support for London games and places like Reading - usually because people have made a day out of it and have got sh*tfaced early in the day. Take the alcohol out of the equation and its surprising -if not embarrassing- how many just go quiet.

Different story up north - we struggle at places like Burnley and Barnsley because we're given a whole end and the sound just drains away. Its easier at places like Leicester and Derby where you're packed closer to the home ends; also easier at places like Forest, Ipswich where the ground is tiered and makes the roof ideal for the acoustics.

Fact is our core support is made up of the flasks and blankets brigade - question isn't why they don't make more noise as they put miles in; but why you don't see the faces you see in London travelling further afield.

Yeah this is it. I don't know if you were at Cardiff for example- but there is an example of us going 1 down and then getting behind the lads. Bar old people, i don't understand the mentality of people who will travel up to somewhere like Hartlepool on a tuesday night, to sit in silence, but a large chunk of our fanbase is happy to. We've got far too many cringey songs i agree.

A lot of our fans seem quite deluded on other fans support in comparison to ours, in regards to singing your support is f*cking sh*t etc. I really hope we are vocal for a lot of aways this half of the season we should be.

Let's be honest, it really doesn't make that much difference. We'll have 2,500 odd fans there, which is phenomenal and will motivate the players in itself, and support will be shown. Improving the quality or variety of the songs is not really going to add much to the performance on the pitch.

It's a local game for me so I'll be there, I'll sing some of the time, but not all of the time. It doesn't really matter that much - Rickie Lambert doing in his cruciates, or the Leibherrs putting the club up for sale, will have far more of a genuine impact on our prospects than, say, 25% more singing at away games.

Don't get me wrong - we have brilliant away support and we are taking superb numbers on the road, and that is a postive thing and it is motivating the players. But I don't agree that those fans "upping their game" a bit more is going to make any further effect.

In the main that's right, guess it applies to the majority of clubs apart from the obvious, Man Utd etc.

Had a few quality away supports up north, first time to Hartlepool and both of the recent trips to Oldham.

Problem comes from a lot of our support not being clued up enough in terms of sorting cheap trains, mini buses, independent coaches etc.

On that note, anyone know how that new independent Saints Away coach lot have been getting on?

We had some dire turnouts up north when we were doing ok in the EPL.

in general i'd put that down to playing the same teams at the same grounds year in year out and more often than not losing, lost count of the number of times i went to places like Goodison and witnessing a defeat, our away support was very dull in those days as well

Away numbers used to come out for the relegation run ins, ignoring the Delhurst Park Wimbledon game i remember good turn outs at Bolton in 96, Forest as well for the Micky Evans game.

I went to Forest once...it was great - in the 80's I think. We won, I think Danny Wallace or Channon scored the winner. Strange but there was a Saints bloke there the whole game, sh*t faced waving a large fish the entire game. It was a real fish !!! One of the strangest moments in following Saints I can recall. I think it snowed the same day. Happy days !

Watching the Palace game last night, I was nodding my head along to the wall of noise the Palace fans were creating. I'd love that at SMS. Kingsland South is too quiet though. We're still great as fans go though.

It was a cup semi final for f*ck sake. What do you expect? Palace are normally sh*t apart from 20 or so teenagers jumping up and down banging a drum. We are 10x the club and have 10x the support Palace will ever have.

Agreed, Palace away support at either st marys or the Dell has always been as dull as dishwater, i even went in the palace end at west ham in 2003 and they all sat, few renditions of Eagles Eagles, that was about it for a london derby.

My point was I'd love to have that constant wall of noise at SMS, not that it was Palace fans that were creating it. I've been to Selhurst Park when we played there in the Poortvliet era, and yes they were awful.

Palace have always been cakc. Recently they have formed some 'Ultras' where 200 people or so sing a lot. However, the ground itself is still silent. Last night (In a semi final they were winning) they were quality

This seems to be the popular song with a lot of fans recently, and I like it.

Why would you like it if 50+ football league clubs sing it? I don't see the point in songs that spend ages just singing a tune rather than words. Lets leave that sort of stuff to the foreigners, and Palace.

Because it sounds good and has great volume. There are no songs which are original. All songs get copied so if other clubs sing it, so be it..

And with regard to it having not enough words, 50% of it has words. Just like the Lambert song and many other songs we sing.

Maybe its too modern for our flask carrying fan base

It's an 'ultra' song. Those types of chants and that type of support should be kept exactly where it is. Clubs trying to import that sort of style are an absolute joke. Palace are the best of a bad bunch at it seeing as they were pretty much the first ultra group of note over here. You won't catch any traditional proper English club singing any of that sh*te.

Heard Liverpool chanting it today against Citeh. Cant get much more of a traditional club than that. Same with Celtic.

I also go to a lot of league 2 games as I live in Plymouth. Plymouth sing it, as do a few other league 2 clubs.

A great blast from the past and the Notts Forest connection would make it an apt time to re introduce it!!!!

We hate Nottingham Forest, we hate LIVERPOOL too, we hate West Ham Utd, but Sarfvampton we luv u!!

The Manchester Utd bit didn't quite fit in properly and weren\t the top dogs back then Liverpool and Forest were.

Lol - you'll just be one of those old farts who stay silent all game to the noisier members of our away support Saturday.

I know you too well - 8 pints of OSH and you can't even remember what City you live in let alone the words to all the songs. You'll be standing there with an inane grin on your face ('cos you're at a game) mumbling "I miss DM saying what we don't hic".

Sure you'll be waving your arms and everyone will think you're doing the Messi song, but we'll know you're just trying to keep your balance....

Agreed. Sign of lacking in proper support copying all that Ultra sh*te. It used to be foreign football fans copying us not the other way around.d, especially when its something **** like humming a tune together that isn't even a proper song.
