aintforever Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 He is still under contract with the club then, just not a professional contract. A bid would have to be made for him if another club wanted to sign him. Although you can have 17 year olds on youth contracts, so I think my original point may have been a bit wrong... So what is the point in these new EPPP rules then, every club could just sign their 12 year olds up on long term contracts that take effect when they are 17? Bearsy Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 I'm not sure these pre-contracts would prove legally binding if it made it a far as court. Didn't Defoe stitch up Charlton back in the day by tearing his up and joining West Ham?
krissyboy31 Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 What age can you sign kids on a pre-contract contract then?IIRC They can sign professional forms after they have left high school and the contract kicks in on their 17th birthday, which is usually within 12 months. Meantime they are on scholarships and continuing with their education (in addition to their training and footballing duties).

Pilchards Posted 13 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 13 January, 2012 Just a thought, you are a 17 year old kid earning something like £200 a week and a team offers you a signing on fee of £250,000 plus a wage of 5k a week. Okay so you won't play in the first team for about 3 years but they will develop you to become a good player still. I think the decision would be far too easy for most of us on this one and I don't blame the lad if he leaves.
sammysaint Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 No point moaning about being a feeder club, we get well compensated for it. We also sign players from smaller clubs so it works both ways. Just need to get ourselves in a position where fewer and fewer want to leave. You'd imagine if we'd been in the top flight Bale, Walcott and AOC would have at least stuck around another year or 2 longer, and the price would have been higher. Beyond that who knows. Spurs have managed to retain Modric unlike a few years ago losing Carrick, Berbatov, Keane. But there's always a price when it just makes more sense to tell, even Man Utd sell players. Look at the current players in the prem and are best players at the moment, we have let go a decent attacking team in the prem, if we resigned them all we would be a top 6 club. Jones Walcott upfront AOC and Bale on the wings Lallana and Cork in the middle, would be a great attacking team.

Exactly and there is still no guarentee he will make it so saying he should stay here for his development is madness, a footballer has a very short career and an unproven teenager can go from being the next best thing to non league very quickly (ask Jamie White once linked with Bareclona/Real and now nowhere) if Arsenal offer big money he will go it's part of life but if that money keeps the club financially stable and allows us to bring in a few more players then all is good. Don't get me wrong I'd love to keep our best prospects but it just doesn't work like that as has been pointed out even Arsenal and Man Utd sell players they would rather keep. What I hope is that the further we go on this journey the longer the youngsters will stay and while we will still loose the absolute cream of the crop eventually hopefully the second tier accademy products like Lalanna and Chris Baird will stay for good. SuperSAINT Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 What we say in respect to our youth players being sold doesn't really mean much now. We're in a much stronger position than we have been, but when the elite come knocking - We can't hold onto them. All we can do is hope they sign pre-contract deals, and get us much money as we can for them - That's a pretty terrible way of looking at it - But it's reality. dubai_phil Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16543255.stm Southampton manager Nigel Adkins says highly-rated Academy defender Luke Shaw is definitely not for sale. Despite having only been an unused substitute for the Saints first team, the England Under-17 full-back has been attracting plenty of attention. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have watched the 16-year-old, but Adkins say the club are not interested in selling. "Luke Shaw is a big part of our future plans," he told BBC Radio Solent. In recent years the Saints have seen their prized assets leave to Premier League clubs with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both joining Arsenal and Gareth Bale signing for Tottenham. But Adkins says Shaw will not go the same way. "We have got no intention believe you me of letting any of our young players move on," he continued. "We want them in the first team in the Premier League playing for Southampton football club."

The top talent will just walk out the door to Arsenal for a few grand. We shouldn't kid ourselves, even if we get to the Prem the best players will still want to play for Man Utd, Arsenal etc.
VectisSaint Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 Not at all, you can sign a contract that takes effect from your 17th birthday. Which is what Saints have done with a large number of their current scholars. The contradiction is that SFC OS says he signed a 3 year pro contract. As he isn't actualy 17 yet this is technically incorrect. If he has signed a pre-contract then it is not a contract. In law you cannot sign a contract before you reach the age of majority anyway. The9 Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 The Independant have a big article about Luke Shaw our promising youngster. It says we have put a 4m price tag on him and that Arsenal are leading the way over City, Liverpool etc. What a load of ****, why would we sell one of the hottest prospects in English football?Hope someone can put the article on here please. I laughed at the use of "elite Premier academy scouts", we're in that group.
Itchen_block4 Posted 13 January, 2012 Share Posted 13 January, 2012 As I understand it, the contract he's on at the moment is binding, just not the professional one that he can get at 17 which has more money in it. I'd imagine his pre-contract turns professional automatically so that he doesn't just decide to sod off at the end of it. The EPPP replaces the old tribunal system to decide compensation for when youth contracts run out. I don't think Shaw's youth contract runs out for at least another year, so if Arse and co want him now, they'd have to agree a fee with the club.
