Minty Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Bingo http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/9464484.Saints_linked_with_Spanish_midfielder/ The life of an Echo Sports Reporter...1.Have a lie in 2.Wake up 3. Read Saints web. 4 .Post "exclusive" on Echo site. To be fair, they don't claim an exclusive at all and quite clearly state 'it has been reported this morning' so I don't see anything wrong with that. The Echo won't always hear about things first, especially in cases like this where it originates from afar, and they'd not be doing their job if they didn't report on stories like this. Window Cleaner Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Do they realise this isn't Inception? Hope not, had real trouble understanding that film, had to pretend I liked it though, one of the kids brought it home from America a couple of years back, thought it was the Bees Knees as well. Clifford Nelson Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 A few peculiar comments on here. One that we take a loan signing to cover in case somebody gets injured......A few that we ought to take him because he comes from Juve and Spurs. The reason for going out on loan is to get games. Iago isn't getting it at Spurs so they think we might be interested. So there is clearly no point to this transaction for Iago and for Juve unless he gets to play. He also has never managed to get any games in at the age of 22 either at Juve, Valencia or Spurs. So why do we think that he would do a job for us? NA isn't known to through in players with little or no experience of english football (think Guly and SDR), and it is unlikely he would do it with this chap. The only people delighted with this loan move would be Redknapp and Spurs who would get him off their hands.

Modern managers hardly know anything about their signings, it's all down to the scouts who show them players they've got their eye on. Look at Sven when he took over at Man City, how many players did they sign? Did he know much about them? I really doubt it.

I think NA is a bit more involved in the buying of players at Saints, but neither he nor the scouts could possibly have seen this guy play, since he hardly has. I think the story comes from Spurs putting the guy into the press to generate interest because they want to get rid of him. I won't eat my old hat, but I'll be flabbergasted if he comes here. That would smack of panic.

That would smack of panic. Well, put it this way, I really doubt Nigel had heard of Steve De Ridder, but yes, he'll be involved definitely! As for Spurs generating press, I suppose it's not unheard of but I doubt a club like Spurs has to get the Mail to write something up, I'm sure the phone never stops ringing with enquiries for players. I don't think an ex-Barcelona youth and ex-Juventus player needs to be sold via the press like that, even if it sounds like he never quite made the grade. petermcpete Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Gio Dos Santos could be a better bet...I've always rated him and reckon he would fit well into the way we play. Possibly too similar to De Ridder though in that if we played him on the wings his defensive work isn't 'that' good...and not a natural striker. Just rambling to myself here sorry lads. JRM Posted 11 January, 2012 Share Posted 11 January, 2012 An Echo journalist once had a right go at me for suggesting that, and that they came on here for stories. To be honest, what evidence do we have otherwise? The one place they have got advantages is they have excellent contacts with a number of regional papers, the echo might not have good links with saints at the moment but other papers do with their local clubs so the echo can find out through other means. I think Manji gives this website too much credit if he thinks this is the source of their stories

I think it was even broke on here by a journalist from a regional title.
Saint Garrett Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 You would like to think that the manager would have the final say so in the transfer.
Crazy Diamond Posted 12 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 12 January, 2012 That says far more about Sven than 'modern managers'. Adkins especially clearly wants to know a lot. No doubt scouts recommend players and some come for trials etc, or he goes to see them, but I doubt any are just brought in without him wanting them. He's already signed and been linked with players he's worked with before and wants people who'll fit in 'on the bus'. A lot of decent managers look beyond ability to character and background too, and how they'll settle in the squad. Oh I don't think it's ever a case of signings being brought in that he doesn't want, but I hardly think someone like De Ridder was someone he had personally had his eye on for a while. sotonist Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 Surely reaping the benefits of a loan going well is simply winning games? that's what most loans would be here to do. if we can then sign them, great, if not, well it still won us some games. I don't see many drawbacks. Which is why I'd expect a track record in english football for a player we're taking on loan with no prospect of a permanent deal when we're chasing the title. If there's no loan fee, that would sweeten it.

Couldnt agree more if I could have picked one signing pre season it would have been him and I still feel the same. I remember watching gio at barca and thinkin he was going to be the next big thing like a new messi or ronaldinho and was pretty shocked when they let him go to spurs Since then his game time has been very limited but im sure if used properly and managed right this guy could be a star

saintsmike25 Posted 12 January, 2012 Share Posted 12 January, 2012 The problem is the Echo aren't on the best terms with the club and unlike before the club will not even release a snippets bit of information in regards to transfers. At the end of the day they should use whatever they can find and try to verify if there's truth to it. Thats what a journalist does.

So it is announced on Twitter by the Saints Official Feed around 8pm last night It is announced on the Saints Official Web Site at the same time All the links are posted on here And yet you wait until it is on THFC & Sky to say "it seems to be fact" So you don't trust our own web-site?
