HMS Daring ,the Royal Navy's new type 45 destroyer leaves Portsmouth for her maiden deployment tomorrow.

According to the report this warship cost £1bn and five more are being built.

Most of the cost is the weapons/radar system, amazing piece of kit. They claim that if it was moored in London it could detect an enemy missile/jet at Lands End and shoot it down before it reached Dorset. If you drive along the M27 and look at the top of Portsdown Hill you can see the test radar tower that is identical to the ones on these destroyers.

Dauntless and Diamond are already in service (Dauntless is on standby to go out to the Gulf at short notice too), Dragon and Defender are on the first stage of trials, Duncan is still being built. A pity the other planned 6 were cancelled, but on the other hand, watch this space :

I know, it sounds odd. Like something out of Thomas the Tank Engine, but apparently there have been quite a few HMS Duncans going back to commemorating some RN admiral that hammered the bejesus out of the Dutch Navy at the end of the 18th Century in the Battle of Camperdown.

The USN also use the name USS Duncan, but commemorating a different bloke. Apparently Silas Duncan was involved in some early punch-up over the Falklands.

Another f*cking massive waste of cash, commissioned bt that one eyed Scottish idiot no doubt.

Yep course it is, let's not spend any money trying to defend our country !!! They've taken more Navy ships out of service than they have commissioned !
