Titanic Sinking 100th Anniversary at SMS

i know some muslims that would give you a coupe of slaps for making offensive comments like that...

Seriously?

If that is true then why do you hang out with such narrow-minded thugs?

You do him wrong. A "coupé of slaps" is three Essex girls in a Ford Probe. Clearly his Islamic friends were touched by the tribute and were making a kind offering in return.

be quiet biggot boy.

But I haven't made any bigoted jokes yet! You're possibly confusing me with the other dude who made the weak Hog Roast jibe, but even then you do seem disproportionately angry about it.

You know when you criticised Benjiis name just now, what was the five letter word behind the asterisks I can't figure it out? Maybe do it as an anagram so as not to offend the under 12's.

I'm against the idea that people should be 'forced' into grief in such a way. If a Saints player died then fair enough, that is a sad moment personal to all inside the stadium. But the Titanic? I doubt anyone at St Marys has ever met anyone who died on that ship. It will in all likelihood just be 25,000 stood in silence out of politeness and social conformity. What if 2,000 years ago Saxon warlords raped pillaged and murdered 3,000 Roman Settlers on what is now St Deny. Do we have a minutes silence for them too, or do they not matter because it was longer ago? I have already had to sit through 3 separate minutes silence for Gary Speed, who has no connection to Saints, but none for Gary Ablett who apparently doesn't matter.

The more tributes we have to causes not connected to the club, the more we become riddled with hypocrisy. Yes it was a tragic event, if you want to remember it feel free to lay flowers at any number of memorials around the city. Put please stop telling me I have to grieve too.

I don`t know anyone who died in the war (any war come to think of it) but that doesn`t stop me paying my respects on a yearly basis to those who did. Nobody is asking you to grieve. Just pay a small respect to those 550 Southampton residents (many of whom may have been Saints fans) who died that night. Alpine was asking if the club was going to do anything to just mark the centenary of the biggest peacetime tragedy to hit the city. I don`t really mind if they do or they don`t, but there does seem to be some strange attitudes coming out on this thread.

My feeling is there is a statute of limitations on these things. For example I always take a moment on the anniversary of my nan's death to mark her passing but my great-grandmother who I never met... not so much.

Respect to you if you can work up some grief for the poor lost souls of the Titanic but while I appreciate it may seem a bit hard-hearted of me, I honestly can't.

Not grieving. The grieving was done by the 1000 families who were affected 100 years ago. A brief moment of respect and rememberance. That is all. As I said ,I really don`t mind if the club do or don`t but some on here are certainly coming across as quite disrespectful.

I'm with you on respect, you can respect people of which you know very little I suppose. But remembrance? Who are we remembering?

Who are we remembering when we remember the war dead? As I said, I don`t know anyone who died in any war(just or unjust) but I will remember them every November. There were big memorial services for those who died in the Twin Towers last year which I found quite affecting, even though I didn`t know any of them, and that wasn`t Southampton related.

I walked into a shop a couple of months back and everyone all the staff and employees were just standing still, silently staring at me. Creeped the cock out of me, I thought the shop was being held up or something. Turned out there'd just been an announcement over the tannoy instructing everyone to observe a minutes silence for 9/11.

Not sure what my point is there, kind of they were all doing it but I reckon at least half were faking. Probably they just wanted to get on with their shopping.

Is the Belfast shipyard holding a 100 year service as well

Yes they are, and they also held a short dignified ceremony on 31st May last year, the 100th anniversary of Titanic's launch, where a distress rocket was fired off in Belfast docks at the time of her launch, and all the ships in the area at the time sounded their horns for exactly 62 seconds, the time it took Titanic to slide down the launchway into the water.

I think that sounded tasteful. Dont know why an element of Sotonians always sneer at the idea of such things.

I haven't got tolerance for Racism, bigotry or stereotypes no matter how fleeting they maybe.

I'm sure there's fans on this place from all different walks of life, why say something like Muslims will be eating pork, drinking a brew celebrating the colossal tragedy of the titanic like the skate WUM Jrm said initially?

If I'm supposed to find that funny, then sorry mate. Count me out of your laughs.

So let's recap: we are at home on the exact 100th anniversary of what is probably the best known maritime disaster in history, one that is inextricably linked with the city of Southampton and one that took the life's of probably hundreds of the city's seafaring workers and no doubt impacted on '000s more within the city. Indeed very many of those killed would have been from the very communities who lived in and around the area where our stadium is now located and no doubt walked down the same roads that many of us will have walked to and from the stadium.

The city is running a series of 'events' to mark this occasion. As the game at SMS will represent the largest public gathering that will take place in the city that week what better way to let the ordinary people to take part in a simple act of rememberence to those on the Titanic and to all those from the city who have perished at sea and in war. I would suggest that to a lot of people 'city and club' are intertwined and they would welcome the opportunity to offer a simple public mark of respect to our proud forefathers. And further that to hold a small ceremony would show the club to be very much at the centre of the city.

What's not to like?

Wow, just when you think a certain topic will be uncontroversial.

550 of the city inhabitants died in the space of ca. 2 hours. Under tragic and gruesome circumstances, and partly due to incompetence, greed and sheer snobbery. The pain of these events was profoundly felt in the city, according to a couple of my elder relatives, just like the German bombs that killed a load of kids in the Art Gallery. It has nothing to do with Hollywood bastardisations of the events. There are real human stories behind this. How about the story of Alfred Peacock, Sotonian born and bred, dead at 7 months old ?? And I would have thought the fact that so many third-class passengers from the area died, put behind the first and second class and the Americans (who apparently barged past the Brits into the lifeboats) in terms of worthyness to save, is even more reason to commemorate ?

Southampton Football Club is a very important focal point of this citys life.

Wish I hadnt started this now, I am sure some of the dismissive responses are because I started it. :(

For once I find myself agreeing with Alpine. I don't normally. Not sure whether a minutes silence at SMS is appropriate, but I share the sentiment. I find the media obsession with the Titanic to be in really bad taste. Southampton had a population of around 130,000 in 1912. The city was devastated, especially in the areas in the bottom of town where many of the 550 lived. We are going to get no end of anniversary hype from the media this year, which will all ignore the human misery that the sinking caused. And no, we dont need a Titanic museum, just the memorial. Rant over.

I just read that James Cameron and 20th Century Fox are re-releasing the film next year in 3D. No doubt to rake another billion in. Greedy bastards.

If you go to Dubai and Eric and Phil will confirm it that the local Muslims do drink alcohol (and lots of it) they also eat pork even if they are not allowed to buy it in the supermarkets lots of not for muslims signs in Spinneys.

so get off your high horse and being so PC all the time

I dont have issues with any of that, every man to his own n all but to imply a group of people muslims, or whoever will be happy at a tragedy such as the titanic is out of order no?

This is what JRM implied.

Anyway, those who get it, will and those that dont never will I suppose.

Vulgar language like that has no place on a family forum like this, hang your head in shame.

Your weird ramblings have ruined a thread that was going just fine debating the size of winslets fun bags

Great post. I would've thought the club would want to do something to mark the anniversary, especially as it falls exactly on the 100 year anniversary. If they don't however, I don't think we should use it as the latest stick to beat the club / NC with.
