I know this will get punted to another channel at some stage, but just thought that I would share this with you.

My youngest Daughter has a little job and also needs to sort out a work placement where the best opportunities are out of Town. So being 16 and her having an interest in Motorcycles we thought a Scooter would be a good start. She got on with her CBT, so a serious look at what was available to buy was made. Obviously being responsible insurance was factored in, got a quote on a £500 scooter £580!!! I know car insurance for youngsters is eye watering prices but had no idea that 50cc Scooters also incurred the same mental treatment.

We saw a nice little deal on a brand new Peugeot, put this in and the quote was similar. Then decided to have a look at that furry animal website, put in the book price of £1100, for fully comp the premiums ranged from £430 right up to £1295!! By the time you added on the extras that were standard with a few more competitive deals, the total had bumbled up to £1500!! ........................... Hang on a 17 year old can get fully comp on an old Fiesta for that!!

I know this subject crops up all the time, but what chance do some kids have to get mobile and give themselves a better chance in life without getting rooked.

Yeah it's not cheap - I had an old Lambretta (well, still have it, in bits in the garage) and it gets silly. I was 20 when I got it.

I couldn't actually get insured at all to begin with. A company had noticed I was using insurance websites and got my number. They called me and got me in touch with a company for a quote. Each time I finished the call with a company, I'd get a call asking how I got on, and if they thought I could get a better deal they'd find me a competitor and keep going until I got the best deal.

Companies that do insurance for bikes can be quite temperamental - I didn't have a garage when I got my scooter, and two or three companies weren't interested just on that basis.

My ped insurance was only 130 odd. Have you tried putting the insurance under your name if that makes sense, i put mine under my dads name..

I got mine on ebay for under 500, with a helmet.

Viscious circle that is almost impossible to break. Kids cant get insurance so lots drive without it, uninsured driver has an accident and that bumps up the cost to legal road users. Very simplified but thats the crux.

Oh that and frivolous (sp!) claims.

In my day, 1979, you bought a cheap 15 year old mini for £300 and bought 3rd party fire and theft. we Would not afford fully comp. When at 18 a bought a 6 cylinder 1600vitesse it cost me a months wages to insure 3rd PFT. Things arn't all that different.

Have you tried looking for any deals on a brand new scooter which might include a year's insurance? Might even work out cheaper - plenty of cheapo Chinese bikes and scooters out there; my mate's son just bought a new Chinese 125 for a grand and it's absolutely fine, quality-wise.

I believe adding yourself as a named driver can sometimes bring the price down.

Tried that, even with me being 47 added another £40. Probably if I had put in 55 it probably would have dropped 50%!!

Middle-aged bikers surprisingly incur high insurance costs if starting afresh as many seem to think they're Barry Sheene and depsoit said bike in the nearest ditch.

Ive not ridden my bike for nearly 2 years. Its currently being resurrected by Spike Island in Eastleigh so I popped into A-Plan for a quote. Bike is 02 Fazer 600, they quoted £670! Tried gocompare and managed to get £220....

Thats not true, well not in my case anyway. Took a DAS when I was in my late 30's, never ridden before, passed test bought a 650, insurance fully comp for a year was £16 pm

You were fortunate, i know alot of bikers who've returned and been charged a fair whack.

Insurance is a complete joke. While I am at uni, I don't need a vehicle, but once home I need one so have to get insured for odd few months on my parents car. It's not easy unless you're very lucky. i.e. parents pay for a car & insurance - which isn't viable for the majority of families.

yeah think you may be right going by what other bikers and you chaps on here have said. Maybe choice of bike helped, SV650S. Known to many hardcore bikers as a girls bike :D

They can call it what they want, till you leave them for dead through the twisties as they never learnt to go round corners on their 1000cc whatever. Great bikes the SV650 and highly recommended to anybody to ride for a year or two before getting a big JILF sportsbike.

totally agree, awesomely flickable. Did a track day at brands indy circuit, piddled all over the bigger heavier bikes. Until coming out of clearways onto the straight then they got some steam up. But yep, top bike indeed. Being a V twin sounded great with a scorpion too :D

anyway, de railing! my apologies...

£90 for my Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 big retro and I don't even have full no claims yet - bargain! Mind you it's completely the opposite of the SV - stupidly fast in a straight line (I can easily keep up with my mates on their sportsbikes) but handles like a waterbed through the twisties! :D
