Southampton boss Nigel Adkins tells me he's all but given up hope of signing #Celtic striker Gary Hooper.

Adkins: #Celtic dont want to sell, so thats it. We move on. I know Gary and I'm delighted he's done so well. He's a top class striker.

The fat lady is certainly warming up her tonsils, oh well!!

Page last updated at 16:04 GMT, Friday, 20 January 2012

E-mail this to a friendPrintable version Hooper has scored 16 times in his second season with Celtic Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has all but given up hope of persuading Celtic to part with striker Gary Hooper.

The Championship leaders have already had two bids rejected by the Scottish Premier League pacesetters.

And Adkins told BBC Scotland: "Celtic say they don't want to sell him. So that's it, end of story.

"I know Gary and I'm delighted he's doing so well. He's a top-class striker, but we have other good strikers here, so we move on."

This was obvious ages ago. Not sure how we are going to get the top class striker we clearly want though if we only go for players that clubs want to sell.

Well that's that then, Another 31 page thread on a striker we never signed!!!

The worrying bit is that he said we have ''other good strikers here already'' - i hope that doesn't mean he's now not looking to strengten up top...

J-Rod or Sordell please.

If what has been reported is true, then we have at least 4M to splash.

I think signing a top class striker might have to wait till summer, when hopefully we'll have the added attraction of Premier League kudos and wonga.

We'll just have to hope Guly/Connolly maintain fitness and form. Would also help if Barnard could make a comeback.

Why should they, they're just 3 points from the play-off places with a pretty clement looking run-in.

Probably why they've signed McQuoid on loan as well, isn't Austin injured just now?

Of course they shouldn't. I just question our transfer policy on the basis that we appear to be going for a few players that we had no chance of getting. Most people realised we wouldn't be getting Hooper as there was no chance that Celtic would sell their best player to an NPC club. J-Rod seems very unlikely also. Sordell we could get perhaps. I hope that we don't end up with no more strengthening up front. Clearly we want more reinforcements up there so if we don't get any that will be disappointing.

But we've signed Tadanari Lee, can't be any worse than Jonno Quick although some say that his ball control leaves much to be desired. Then there's Falque, may be a good loan signing there.

The fact that we're NPC has nothing to do with it. They would sell to BSC if the price was right for them. The fact that Celtic will only sell at an over the top price is probably the main reason why we won't get him.

Because we failed to get Hooper or because of lots of crap on here?

Well some seemed to believe that we would actually and eventually bid 8 million £ or so. Do they not know us?

I mean you only have to look back to the summer and remember that we didn't meet Swindon's asking price of 1.8 million £ for Austin and if you read some blogs we offered a measly 200K+add ons for CMS whilst exacting 12 million £ for AOC.

So if they were silly enough to think that we'd meet an elevated asking price for Hooper that can only go down as self-inflicted suffering.

It's very risky to gamble promotion on it. This guy from Fulham even on loan sounds quite good. I would go for something like that if we can't pull these other deals off.

I never denied that, I just feel that we really need a new striker in January. Seemingly the management agree if the rumours are to be believed. I still question the wisdom of Adkins referring to us possibly signing a very big name. Then when we inevitably fail to get the very big signing, it's a bit underwhelming.

My thoughts exactly and so correct imo! I did wonder if it was, one rule for Saints and one rule ...... you know the rest.

1) he never said that we might sign a "big name" and 2) show a bit of self control and don't build yourself up if you're so sure that it's inevitable that we won't make a significant signing.

We've already got 2 of the top scorers in this league, DC is quality and we've already signed an International level striker. Another proven scorer would be a bonus but chill out FFS.

He said we might make a big signing (or words to that effect if I remember correctly). I can't be bothered to go and find the exact quote. It doesn't change the point of my post, I didn't build myself up, I am taling about the fanbase in general. I just don't think it's the wisest thing to do. I'm perfectly chilled thanks. If we are to believe the various rumours about strikers, the management clearly agree with my assertion that another striker would improve our chances of promotion. Doing it without another striker is a fair bit of a risk and I would prefer us to strengthen further as otherwise we are relying on the fitness of Connolly.

So whose still available then?

Sharp? Maynard? Austin?

I'd be very, very happy with any of these in the team. Will give us that extra vital thrust in front of goal we need.

Swansea are targeting Maynard in a swap deal with Dobble. I'm sure Briz would be happy to have Puncheon!

I can't be arsed to find the exact quote either but he said that we might get a loan, a small signing, a major signing or no one at all......can't see how that can build up a fanbase when essentially it means **** all. You could just as easily say he's underplaying our aims this transfer window.

As I said, we'll have Lee shortly so we won't have to rely on the fitness of DC especially as RL and Guly rarely miss games anyway. I think they are keen to get someone with an eye on the prem rather than someone who can fire us to promotion. We've scored a bucket load already this season and NA appears to have lots of faith in our current players which is the right thing to do if the value isn't out there.

- Forte won't be here much longer

- Reeves isn't a striker

- De Ridder isn't really a striker

- Guly Do Prado you could argue isn't really a striker

Which leaves...

Lambert

Connolly

Guly Do Prado

Tadanari Lee - when he arrives

Barnard - Injury and other issues

Connolly...present Injury Prone

Guly.....present Midfielder

De Ridder ...present hit an miss, too inconsistent to start every week at the moment

Lambert.....present after the next match, all patched up and rested Banned for one game but yes after that he'll be present

Lee.....soon to be present Very excited by this signing but he could easily not settle for a while

Barnard....seen in training today Injured and has been all season. Will take match practice to get him back up to the pace once he is fit

Forte...........present'ish Awful

Reeves......present Untested. Looks like he could be a decent player, but can't rely on him.

8 strikers and we were taking the **** out of West Ham cos they've got 7.

This is why IMO, we do need another striker.

Connolly...present- Tendency to get injured for long periods.

Guly.....present-

De Ridder ...present - Not a striker

Lambert.....present after the next match, all patched up and rested

Lee.....soon to be present- Quite possible that he will take time to adjust to the league, especially coming from a totally different culture and style halfway around the world.

Barnard....seen in training today- I heard he was going to be out for longer. Also other rumours that he was being sent on loan. Unproven in this league.

Forte...........present'ish- terrible player.

Reeves......present- Youth team player. Not what we need for the run in.

There was no need to mention getting a major signing IMO. The way he said it implied to me that that was what we were after. Subsequent big money rumours of Hooper suggests that what he meant too. IMO there was no reason to mention it, it's not what we have done up until now with regards to transfer policy. I preferred our previous approach.

With regards to your other point, see above for the outline as to why I believe we need another striker. Injuries to one or two will leave us woefully short as well.

We clearly did have a chance of getting him. Despite some on here might think they know more than about whether this was a non-starter than Adkins - there would have been numerous conversations involving those involved in the game which would have given Saints the idea that it was worth trying.

We have scored 50 league goals, West Ham 41, Cardiff 41, Middlesborough 30.

We have had injuries suspensions to Lambert, Guly, Connolly, Barnard, Chaplow and De Ridder.

Lambert 17 goals, Guly 11, Connolly 6, De Ridder 4, Chaplow 4.

We have added Yago Falque for more attacking flair.

We have added Tandari Lee who scored 15 goals last season in Japan and the winning goal in the Asia Cup.

I don't think Adkins thinks we need another forward, and will just take anyone.

The team in coming weeks Lallana / Falque on the wings, with Lambert and Guly up front.

5 on the bench from - Bart, Martin, Cork, Connolly, De Ridder, Holmes, Butterfield, Doble, Barnard, Chaplow and Tandari Lee.

I don't think Adkins will be desperately seeking a last panic deal to get a forward in - unless he believes he is real quality and good for the long term and worth jumping ahead of the others - e.g. Hooper.

Will he want to clog up squad if he thinks he will have another go for Hooper in the summer?

If Austin is fit and over his shoulder problem I'd be happy with him.

Oh heck, not another 45 pages of gossip about Charlie Austin to look forward to....

In all seriousness, I've never liked the way he always seems to take great delight in scoring against Saints, he also seems to have put weight on from his Swindon days if I'm not mistaken. It also pains me to think we could be spending over £2 million on a player we could have got for £25,000 from Poole Town. That said, on balance, I have to agree with you about Charlie Austin. He's a talented player.

Phoned a friend in Scotland who's a Celtic shareholder. She said she received a newsletter today saying Saints had only offered 4 million so far. That the club doesn't want to see Hooper leave. If we were to increase our bid they may accept to let him go.

Indeed. IMO we haven't seen the last of this yet...we're only in text book negotiation phase 2 at the moment...

Phase 1 - go in low; repeat 2 or 3 times

Phase 2 - say it's all over - go quiet

Phase 3 - go in with higher last minute offer

Still 10 days to go until phase 3...

So who do you think deserves to be dumped from the first 11 or squad the then, especially as you're so keen to see a major signing this window? All teams are weakened by injury and people have been saying the same thing for the last 2 windows and I'm yet to see us suffer such a string of injuries which has caused us to implode. We've got a good squad with good flexibility and options.

Oh and to those saying Guly isn't a striker, what the **** is he then? He 's played as a striker for most of the season and scored 11 goals so far and numerous assists... sounds like a striker to me. I've also heard that he's not a winger or CM either so clearly not a midfielder as well!

Guly currently joint third in the League scoring charts. Good player, anyone who comes in needs to be better than him.

I presume that is a joke. The facts as we know them are these - it is reported that Saints have made offers for Hooper and NA has (unusually) said that this might be true. This still means we may or may have really wanted him. Celtic whilst clearly keen to cash in and start an auction have very publicly tried to push the price up. NA has now publicly tried to push the price down by saying its all over. The ball is now in Celtic's court (although I dare say Hooper's agent is still pushing). If they come back and say okay how about price X it may go through. In short we are no nearer or further away from signing Gary Hooper than we ever have been.
