Gary Hooper

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache

Does it? He's never played in the Premier League and has never won promotion from the Championship.

True, but he's done well at Championship level, now is doing well in the SPL and, more importantly, in the odd European game, so the PL should be a natural next step for him if you ask me.

He was third top scorer in the league in 2009-10, 19 in 35 league appearances. Not bad, but would he be first choice with us? Not certain by any means.

Still don't buy the 'statement of intent, he'll get us out of the Champions and keep us in the Premier League' bit though. For that matter, does any player guarantee that?

Nope on this one I actually have an opionion, thanks to the vagaries of local Satellite systems (we have THREE of them), the SPL is the ONLY football I have at home on telly.

Hooper is a useful player & I have seen him play.

I have never seen Sharp Jut or Maynard on telly so have never ventured an opinion on them.

I'd certainly take him over that over rated "Balkan" striker (I think) who's name escapes me at Rangers

Jelavic? All I've heard of him is he'd be very expensive.

For any of you that dont know who hooper is, your lack of general football knowledge is quite shocking, and for that reason your opinon on other targets is pretty much meaningless! Hooper would be an outstanding signing for us, his record, pedigree and age make him a much better option than some of the overated, untested players that we are constantly linked with. Hooper is a player that has done it at every club he has played for, no matter what the level (non league through too europe), not somthing that can be said about maynard, lukas or sharpe.

Extremely harsh. Whilst we all follow Saints closely, there is no rule for how much we should follow other clubs, let alone leagues and countries! Everyone is entitled to an opinion based on their knowledge. I will happily comment on players I've seen, but won't on those I haven't, as in Hooper's case. I make no apologies for that, and it sure as hell isn't 'shocking'. It's just life.

Very good player and would be very happy if he signed but just can't see it happening. It would be massive money to get Celtic to agree to it even if they are broke and even if they were willing then I could see a prem club coming in for him. Great that we're looking at that level of signing but of course we need to sign someone at that level not just be linked with them. I'm hoping that we're not wasting time looking at players that for whatever reason we don't stand a chance of getting.

WOuld be a fantastic signing - that's why it aint going to happen.

We have had many fantastic signings in the past so no reason to beleive that we cannot have more in the future..

NA clearly wants him, so lets see how far this game of Russian roulette goes...

Brought him for pittance, sold him for £4,000,000. He certainly knows what this lad is about and I reckon we may go all out for him.
He sold him for £2.4M, which makes a big difference as Celtic aren't going to sell him for less than they bought him seeing as he has done well there. For that reason it seems like a non starter to me.

Seriously, what a boring club Celtic is to support, or any scottish club really.

a 2 horse race every year, never changes. a couple of minutes of European football before they're knocked out by a random eastern European team.

What is there to be excited about up there...? Wouldn't blame Hooper for wanting to move to have a bit more fun in his career.

McCann seriously undermined my opinion of the Scottish league, although Jos has helped increase it, but playing in front of 60,000 fans, winning things and European football surely mean we'd have to pay a fortune in wages to get him to move. Getting their 5th choice CB is one thing, but their star striker? Maybe the posters on here pointing to a flawed transfer policy are actually right.

After reading some of those comments, it was be rather amusing to say the least if we did manage to sign him

"Note to Southampton:

You, are a ****ey English Championship club with a team so poor that Hooiveld looks like a superstar in it. You can have our rejects.

We, Are Celtic Football Club, you don't buy our top striker."

Another thread about on talkceltic about Gary Hooper where fans discuss whether they would rather play Gary Hooper (Who they rate at 7m) or Premier League failure Anthony Stokes.

It's surprisingly close considering the players in question

7m? They must be joking - I find it quite funny how Celtic and Rangers fans quite blatantly overestimate the quality of their players and therefore their prices. Scoring week in week out against Kilmarnock is hardly an impressive feat.

If Rickie went to Celtic he get 40 a season I reckon and then they'd probably value him at somewhere around the 10m mark (which, as much as I like him he clearly isn't worth) - ridiculous.

Just out of interest, when was the last time a top 4 epl club bought a player from the spl? Or even any epl club.
Petrov to Villa seems to be their most recent big money transfer to the epl. Basically, the epl are not exactly queueing up to buy their "star" players.

Spurs bought Hutton who turned out to be pretty ****. They weren't top four then. Everton signed McFadden in 2003 and got in the champions league 2 seasons later. Liverpool bought Daniel Wilson from Rangers in 2010. Again they weren't top four either.

Sunderland spent £9m on Craig Gordon from Hearts. and Villa bought Petrov. I'd like to say Henrik Larsson, but he went via Barca and Helsingborg as the top four would certainly have taken him if they could.

The arrogance of their fans is staggering. Celtic would be nothing more than a borderline top six Championship team in my opinion...Stokes was absolutely rubbish for Sunderland in this league yet he's setting the world alight over there. Hope we do sign Hooper just to see their reaction now.

I am a Fan of both Saints and Celtic and if saints are really interested in Gary Hooper you are looking at £5million plus, Hooper is a class act better than Sharpe , Maynard , JRod , Juke or any of the other names linked. He would be fantastic for Saints as the majority of his goals are from being fed by fast wingmen( Lallana, De Ridder , Richardson & Fox) or 6 yard box poaching from knock downs (RL )

As everyone says Adkins knows him well and he is one to get us promotion and on into the prem , Doubt it will happen though.

Note to Cortese if you spend about £7Mill of OC transfer money you might get Hooper and Commons and then Saints would be odds on to be Champions

Is Commons fit enough? I've heard he misses quite a few games.

Quick, send him a personal email right away!

This is a signing I would certainly be excited about. Unlikely by initial reports but fingers crossed. Saints aren't strangers to a major coup.
