This Charming Man Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Right, where's that Sordell thread. Are Watford bigger than us? Are they better than us? How good is the league they play in?
hypochondriac Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 "I'm happy at Celtic" http://www.celticfc.net/newsstory?item=2011 Well that's that then.
buctootim Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Right, where's that Sordell thread. Are Watford bigger than us? Are they better than us? How good is the league they play in? and who else has Nigel managed......
pap Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 (edited) Right, where's that Sordell thread. Are Watford bigger than us? Are they better than us? How good is the league they play in? They could get relegated this year. If they get a really low points total, they will be relegated to the SPL instead of L1. Edited 16 January, 2012 by pap
Saint Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I don't think you'll find a much more conclusive statement than that. I assume we had initial talks but couldn't agree anything.
thorpie the sinner Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 J Rod anyone? Just change the name at the top of the thread and we can carry straight on from here lol!!!!
Wade Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Is this another forward that doesn't want to come here then, as well as Rodriguez, Maynard and Sharp. It would be easy to be fed up about this.
Giordano Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Celtic’s Gary Hooper has responded to speculation about his future by insisting he is happy in Glasgow. Several clubs are thought to be tracking the striker and Southampton have made enquiries about a possible transfer. Hooper says that transfer talk does not concern him and he does not want to move. “I’m very happy,” he told Celtic’s official website. “I’m back playing now and scored at the weekend. It was good to be back in the team. “I don’t want to go anywhere. I’m a Celtic player and very happy here, winning games for Celtic and we’re two points clear at the top of the league just now. I’m just focusing on football - training, playing and scoring goals – that’s my job.” All this means is that he is not about to put transfer request in that forfeits him a share of the fee. Thats all. Does not mean Celtic will not sell him if the price is right.
Scummer Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I wouldn't take anything from that story on the Celtic site. He's hardly likely to say he hates it there and can't wait to leave is he?
Dig Dig Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Thats that then! Maybe but there is so much politics involved in transfers you have to treat everything with a pinch of salt. A statement like this helps protect the player against a fan backlash should any deal fall through. Or it might be completely genuine. I'd be surprised if Hooper had never should any interest in joining however, most clubs sound this out before making a bid.
buctootim Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I wouldn't take anything from that story on the Celtic site. He's hardly likely to say he hates it there and can't wait to leave is he? No, but he if he wanted to come to Saints he would have been vaguer and more circumspect.
This Charming Man Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Is this another forward that doesn't want to come here then, as well as Rodriguez, Maynard and Sharp. It would be easy to be fed up about this. I don't think it's the end of the world. Hooper not wanting to leave one of the biggest clubs in the world for us is no biggy. Sharp has just turned down Leicester because they wouldn't meet his silly wage demands either and Maynard is clearly holding out for a Premiership club. As for Rodriguez, didn't we pull the plug on that over the daft fee they were demanding?
Rasiak-9- Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I'm afraid to say that these strikers all fit into the category of players we absolutely COULD sign over the summer IF we do get promotion, but simply won't want to join us unless that is the case. This is why, even if we come straight back down, promotion would be huge for the overall progress of the football club. We may have to do an up-down-up-stayup kinda routine a la Sunderland/West Brom.
dubai_phil Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Club makes enquiry Enquiry rebuffed Club makes an offer Offer refused Manager says sell him over my Dead Body Player says "I'm happy here" Because at this point, there is actually no Bid on the table and so OF COURSE they will say that (Media management training page one - keep all options open). Club comes back with raised bid. Game changes. Still some legs left in this IMHO probably Nathan Dyer sized legs as opposed to Peter Crouch sized, but still some legs there
Raging Bull Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 He looks like a fat c**t anyway, would have probably missed his deep fried chocolate bars too much!

Third Division South Days Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Could be Saints have pulled out and statement required for fan base to reassure re commitment.

Pilchards Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Could be Saints have pulled out and statement required for fan base to reassure re commitment. This. We are not going to pay 7.5m for him now as he is not worth it. Back up plan Nigel.
Saint Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Thats exactly what I said. The deal has fallen through for whatever reason, and he can now come out and say hes going nowhere and is committed as he's ever been
Wade Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 There are thousands of players we can't get. That's life. Unfortunately, the ones we can't get are the ones we go for. To be fair, if Celtic wanted £7.5m then fair enough for walking away.
doddisalegend Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I'm not that bothered I'm sure he's a decent player but 7.5m decent? I'm not so sure. I want players who really want be here if a player isn't excited about wearing the red and white .....I don't want him.
Dog Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 (edited) Too fat for Saints, and his feet are tiny. Edited 16 January, 2012 by Dog
Window Cleaner Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Moving on. Billy Sharp then? Wants the freedom of the city, free groceries in Tescos for life and a 445 room palace built for him on the Common apparently.
waterlooville saint Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Still 8 pages short of the Lee thread and we got him in the end ...
Big_Bald_Si Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I'm not that bothered I'm sure he's a decent player but 7.5m decent? I'm not so sure. I want players who really want be here if a player isn't excited about wearing the red and white .....I don't want him. Spurs got Rafael Van der Vaart for £8 million, to put that fee into perspective.
This Charming Man Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 17 bloody pages for NOTHING. Not really. We've established that Celtic are a small club and we're far bigger and that I'm a bigot.
Bucks Saint Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 He is talking to Celtic about an improved deal. This statements fits well with that. If they dont agree / concede to the pressure he and his new agent are building up on them, he can easily say "I really wanted to stay, I was happy there and the club had promised me a better deal, but then they went back on that and I dont know why. Its obvious now they see things differently to me, and perhaps wanted to sell me after all, so I have to consider my options"
DT Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Too fat for Saints, and his feet are tiny. I'm surprised he doesn't fall over.
pap Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 17 bloody pages for NOTHING. I wouldn't say nothing, exactly. We've managed to annoy our cousins north of the border with our astonishing arrogance, so there is that.
Saint Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Spurs got Rafael Van der Vaart for £8 million, to put that fee into perspective. And Andy Carroll was £35....You can always use facts to back up an arguement. he is a good player, not sure he is worth £7.5m though. I guess he is if he takes us up and does well in the prem but you cant promise that.
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 I wouldn't say nothing, exactly. We've managed to annoy our cousins north of the border with our astonishing arrogance, so there is that. True, it was worth it for that reason alone, if nothing else.
dello Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 adds credence to the idea that this was just a smokescreen for another deal going on behind the scenes...
Super_Saint Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Surely £7.5m would get you a much better player from Europe...
Saint_Jonny Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Well thats that then! Move along people nothing to see here...
beavis17 Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 adds credence to the idea that this was just a smokescreen for another deal going on behind the scenes... Exactly my thoughts. Think Adkins may have played the whole situation very cleverly...
Saint J 77 Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 If this is true then I don't understand why Saints have been fannying around making bids for him for the last 2 weeks. Either Hooper is lying, or else NA and NC have wasted a lot of precious time. Let's hope it's the former! Or Celtic have just waved a big wage increase under his nose, one that we will not match!
This Charming Man Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Or... what for this... He just didn't want to come here?
Window Cleaner Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Or... what for this... He just didn't want to come here? How could he not ?
Wade Garrett Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 adds credence to the idea that this was just a smokescreen for another deal going on behind the scenes... Can't see it myself. Leading supporters up the garden path is not something I think Adkins or Cortese would do.
skintsaint Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 And Andy Carroll was £35.... still overpriced ah well plenty more fish in the sea regarding hooper.
dello Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 hoping it's a smokescreen for the mighty J-Rod- i think he's the one they really want.... burnley wouldn't be able to turn down £6.5m- 14 goals now and a decent finish at the wkend- he is definitely worth breaking our record for...
Prince Jazzbo Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Surely £7.5m would get you a much better player from Europe... Hernandez cost Man Utd less that £7m apparently
Raging Bull Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 hoping it's a smokescreen for the mighty J-Rod- i think he's the one they really want.... burnley wouldn't be able to turn down £6.5m- 14 goals now and a decent finish at the wkend- he is definitely worth breaking our record for... Sounds like your grasping at straws some what with the smoke screen thing, Adkins wanted Hooper and quite right too. Going after a high profile striker who's proven at a high level but wanting a relatively unproven player doesn't make much sense and could make whoever we sign feel like second best. Your not the only one to believe in this tactic though...IMO that's crap.
hypochondriac Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 This. We are not going to pay 7.5m for him now as he is not worth it. Back up plan Nigel. I predicted that last week.
hypochondriac Posted 16 January, 2012 Posted 16 January, 2012 Unfortunately, the ones we can't get are the ones we go for. To be fair, if Celtic wanted £7.5m then fair enough for walking away. Yep. It remains a worry that we are possibly overly ambitious with our transfer policy. We shall see I suppose.
